March 10, 2023

Deans of Studies, Theresa Schuhmann and Judy Fieldhouse
This time in March each year is always one that we find exciting and energizing while working with our students. As we kicked off the registration process for the 2023-2024 school year this week, we have been in class meetings to share the logistics of the registration process, but more importantly, to provide opportunities for students to learn about the wide variety of course options from which they can choose. Helping students chart their pathways as they work to make their academic dreams a reality is our favorite part of our jobs. Your daughter’s class counselor is a knowledgeable resource and invaluable part of this process as well.
Linked here are the INSTRUCTIONS that your daughter will receive in class meeting on Monday or Tuesday to complete the registration process. We hope you will take time to review the COURSE CATALOG, this process, and sit with her as she chooses her courses for next year. Along with the opportunity to talk to her counselor, your daughter’s current teachers will conference with her in classes on March 13 and 14, and we will be in study halls for final advising on Thursday and Friday. We look forward to talking with your daughter!

Last night we welcomed sixth, seventh, and eighth graders to AHS in Focus where they were able to get to attend two sessions of their choosing. Students had the opportunity to choose to make a product in Entrepreneurship, design and decorate a joy rock in Art, create and cook their own pizza in Culinary, observe part of Rose Theatre’s play practice and learn how to do stage makeup, or hear from members and students of the Achievement Center about how to balance high school and become a well rounded student! We ended with a fun craft and delicious snacks.

VIRTUAL PARENT/TEACHER/STUDENT CONFERENCES: Conferences are scheduled for Tuesday, March 14, from 5:30-7:30 p.m. in order to give students and parents the opportunity to meet with teachers to discuss your daughter’s progress. Due to the convenience and popularity of virtual platforms in the fall and the lower number of spring conference requests traditionally, we have chosen to offer only a virtual option this semester during our designated conference time. As always, if you would like to request an in-person meeting with your daughter’s teacher, please email the teacher to request a before- or after-school meeting. To schedule a virtual TEAMS conference with your daughter’s teacher(s), please use this link: Conference Signup. All parents are invited to sign up, but parents of students with a D or F in in a class or classes as of March 9 are required to request an appointment time. We recommend, however, that you check your daughter’s grades on PowerSchool between March 9 and March 14 to make plans to attend if needed. If you have any questions that cannot be addressed at parent/teacher/student conferences, please contact your daughter’s dean – JUDY FIELDHOUSE (students whose last names begin with A-K) or THERESA SCHUHMANN (students whose last names begin with L-Z).

PARENT PRAYER: Our parent prayer group will meet on Tuesday, March 14, from 8:30–9:00 a.m. in the AHS chapel and will continue to meet each Tuesday morning throughout the school year. Please park in any open space and enter the school through the main entrance. During the year, we pray for every student by name twice. Next week, we will be praying for the KINGSTOWN Family juniors and seniors. Please join us for any or all of these opportunities. All are welcome!
OPTIONAL MASS AND SACRAMENT OOF RECONCILIATION: Students at AHS have extra sacramental opportunities during the liturgical season of Lent. On Friday, March 17, students may elect to attend an optional 25-minute Mass celebrated by Fr. Dustin Hungerford in our chapel during LEAD & Learn time. When we offered a Mass like this back in November, we had a full house! Also that same day, Fr. Dustin will be available for the Sacrament of Reconciliation for any students interested in going to confession during their lunch period. To participate in either or both of these opportunities on March 17, students must RSVP at the links sent to them via email from campus minister, Mary Ann Steutermann, by March 15.
COMPASSION CONNECTIONS: Compassion truly inspires at Assumption this season! When she was a senior, Emma Bartley ’19, dreamed of a way for the Community of Assumption to have positive impact on the larger Louisville community through our Family Program. That dream became what we now know of as Compassion Connections. Through this initiative, each of our nine AHS families will be collecting needed items to support nine different nonprofit agencies from March 6-17. Your daughter has been asked to bring in a specific item as her donation in homeroom. We’d love for you to consider donating as well if you are able. Just ask your daughter what items her homeroom is collecting and send in any you want to contribute with her during these two weeks in March. LOTS of family points will be awarded to students based on participation. The goal is for each homeroom to have 100% of the students donate something, no matter how small. It’s not the amount that counts; it’s joining together as a family to help those in need. We are all different in how much we can give, and that’s perfectly fine! New this year is that AHS alumnae are also being asked to donate to their family’s agency, and the family with the most alumnae participation gets extra family points. If you are an AHS graduate, please consider giving in this way. Contact abby.martin@ahsrockets.org in the Advancement Office with any questions about alumnae participation. Also, students will be delivering these items to agencies sometime in April. If you can help transport items, please tell your daughter to share this information in her homeroom. Thanks for helping us help so many others!

This past week, our freshmen, sophomores, and juniors learned information about our registration process for next year and seniors learned more about prom. All of our students heard about our Compassion Connections initiatives in which each AHS family adopts a local service agency.
Next week, freshmen, sophomores, and juniors will continue to learn more about registration for next year. Seniors will hear details about graduation and what to wear for senior events. On Thursday and Friday, students will have an opportunity to make plans for the upcoming LEAD & Learn Day on March 22, and freshmen, sophomores, and juniors will have time for advisement with their homeroom teachers as they make final course selections for next year. Students of all grade levels may opt to participate in a short mass in our Chapel on Friday, March 17, during LEAD & Learn time.

CARPOOL LANE REMINDERS: The parking lot proctors and parents in the carpool lane would like to remind you that drivers need to pull up as far as possible in the carpool lane before stopping, and that once the vehicle has pulled up as far as possible behind the car in front of it and stops, the student is to get out of the car and then walk along the sidewalk to the entrance of her choice. Please do not stop short so your daughter will be close to her preferred entrance. When you stop short, it causes the carpool lane to stop and traffic to back up on Bardstown Road; it also creates a dangerous situation when the student takes what seems like a long time to get herself and her belongings out of the car and those in line behind the stopped vehicle try to go around the vehicle, and block the flow of traffic in the two-way drive which is used by those who need to drive in the opposite direction of the carpool lane to get to their parking spaces. We ask our students to treat others with courtesy and compassion and to follow school rules and procedures to keep things running smoothly and safely. Parents and guardians, we ask the same of you.
WORK IT WEDNESDAY SCHEDULE FOR MARCH: The Achievement Center will be hosting two Work It Wednesdays in March. Mark your calendar now for March 15 and 29. Students are invited to come to the Media Center from 7:45 a.m. to 9:00 a.m. to receive extra support in their classes from peer tutors, study groups, or the AC teachers. To ensure we are meeting everyone’s needs, we ask students to please RSVP in advance to Mrs. Conway or Ms. Prentice.
LEAD & LEARN WEDNESDAY ON WEDNESDAY, MARCH 22: We are looking forward to our third LEAD & Learn Wednesday of the year, which will take place on Wednesday, March 22. Students invited specifically to attend an academic help session will be notified by their teachers by Thursday, March 16, via email, and a parent/guardian will be copied on the email. Please remember, we strongly recommend that students attend if an invitation is extended. During LEAD & Learn Time on Friday, March 17, students will receive information in homeroom about educational extension opportunities offered by faculty and staff and will be asked to develop their plans for their purposeful use of March 22 to specifically work to achieve their academic and co-curricular goals for this semester. Please be sure to talk with your daughter about her plans for this day as her plan must be submitted for her attendance on March 22 via an attendance online survey. Students may arrive for their scheduled meetings, if applicable, after 12:00 p.m. Supervised study in the cafeteria is available between 12:00-4:30 p.m. Please consult this message sent out prior to our first LEAD & Learn Wednesday on September 28 to review general details of these days: SPECIAL MESSAGE TO PARENTS – LEAD & LEARN WEDNESDAYS.
IMPORTANT UPCOMING STUDENT REGISTRATION INFORMATION: In March, we will be starting the registration process for the 2023-2024 school year. Below is important information:

Once that process is complete, you will receive a verification email from BBTM with instructions on how to log in to your 2023-24 account or call them directly to make any changes (payment plan, banking information, etc.) Your registration fee will be included with your July payment. If your daughter will not be returning for the 2023-24 school year, please contact our registrar KATHY FLEISCHER. If you have any questions about your account, please contact TAMMY FINCH.

If you are planning to take your daughter out of school for the whole day or before 3:00 p.m. on Thursday, March 30, whether to incorporate a college visit into or to get a jump start on Spring Break travel, please bear in mind that the absence will be unexcused and she will not be able to receive full credit for anything collected for a grade (including tests) in her classes while she is gone; makeup work that is completed and turned in will receive 50% of the grade earned. If your daughter becomes ill and is unable to attend school on Thursday, March 30, or Tuesday, April 11, she will need to provide a doctor’s note or have authorization from our school nurse for the absence to be excused. After the event, you can go online to order photos at https://shop.studioillumination.com/. We are planning on you and your daughter attending, but if a conflict makes this impossible, please let MARY ANN STEUTERMANN know by March 15 if you are NOT able to attend.
LETTERS FROM COLLEGES: Attention, senior parents! Please have your senior daughters submit ALL letters received from colleges regarding admissions decisions, scholarship offers, and admission to special programs and honors colleges to the Guidance Office. The majority of colleges DO NOT provide this information directly to high schools, so your daughter is often our only source of information about this. Her timely sharing of this information is vital to the Senior Honors Celebration as we work to make sure we have all the correct information to celebrate your daughter and the Class of 2023. These letters can be hard copies, faxes, or scanned copies and can be emailed directly to COLLEGE.LETTERS@ahsrockets.org. We ask that students submit all of this information by Monday, March 27, 2023.
DRESS CODE FOR SENIOR PROM: Seniors received information about their Senior Prom at class meetings this week. Senior Prom will be held Friday, May 12, at the Mellwood Art Center from 6-11 p.m. Unlike other Assumption dances, the senior prom is a formal dance, and our dean of students, Cindi Baughman, reviewed information about our dress code for a formal dance with the seniors; she also emailed information about the dress code for the dance to all the seniors. That information is linked here: DANCE DRESS CODE INFORMATION FOR SENIOR PROM. Please take a few minutes to look it over and then to discuss with your daughter so you can help her know what is expected as she is deciding what to wear to the event—as you will see in the information, Mrs. Baughman recommends that they ask parents for advice in following the guidelines to make sure they are dressed appropriately for a Catholic high school dance. We are counting on you to help your daughter evaluate some of the current fashion trends. As the dance gets closer, we will share information about our usual dance policies and expectations along with other specific information about Senior Prom in class meetings and with reminder emails and announcements.

NATIONAL ACT FOR JUNIORS: On Tuesday, March 28, all juniors will take the National ACT at Assumption at 8:15 a.m. Juniors will be dismissed at 12:45 on this day. Just like in October, there is no makeup date for this ACT at AHS, no signup is needed on the part of each family, and this test fee is covered by your tuition dollars. Please encourage your daughter to consult the link sent to them from Mrs. Fieldhouse: Everything you need to know to prepare for the MARCH 28 ACT. Encourage her to bookmark this link for ACT practice, information about making an account to see her scores, and to access TAKING THE ACT: A STUDENT GUIDE. This score can be sent to colleges and universities and used for admission and scholarship purposes. Please contact JUDY FIELDHOUSE if you have any questions.

CURRENT FRESHMAN REGISTRATION PARENT NIGHT: Thanks to those parents in the Class of 2026 who joined us for this information night on Wednesday. During the event, Dean of Studies Theresa Schuhmann reviewed the two information sessions covering the registration process that have and will be shared with the freshmen. The first is designed to introduce students to the language of the registration process so that they can be active and informed participants in the process. The second will be covered with the freshmen on Monday and covers the logistical details of the process including due dates and deadlines. If you were unable to attend, the PowerPoint that was used as part of this presentation is linked here: FRESHMAN REGISTRATION PARENT NIGHT POWERPOINT
FRESHMAN MISSION WEEK T-SHIRT: As a part of your daughter’s Mission Week last week, they had the option to purchase a t-shirt designed by members of their class as a reminder of what they learned. T-shirts can be purchased online until Sunday, March 12 here! See the t-shirt design below.
