MAY 5, 2022
President, Mary Lang and Principal, Martha Tedesco
In honor of National Teacher Appreciation Week, our amazing faculty and staff have been celebrated this week for the awesome work that they do. We are so lucky to have such a dedicated staff of exceptional individuals who are hard-working, committed, innovative, creative, and caring. The community of Assumption is grateful for these women and men who guide our students every day!
To celebrate, all faculty and staff enjoyed a dress down day on Wednesday along with a special breakfast of donuts and muffins as we let them know, “DONUT you know we love you and we can’t do MUFFIN without you!”
And a VERY special thank you this week to our excellent APO (Assumption Parent Organization) parent representatives who planned a delicious Faculty/Staff Appreciation “Taco Tuesday” Luncheon on Tuesday. We also enjoyed door prize gift card drawings that were announced via email all day long on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday. We’ve never been so excited to check our email! Many thanks to ALL parents who contributed with funds for the luncheon and/or the many gift cards. Your generosity was a testament to our faculty and staff who work so diligently to provide a wonderful educational experience for your daughters. We really appreciate everyone who helped to make this week so special. We are beyond grateful – thank you!
We would like to recognize and congratulate the Class of 2022 who has been accepted to nearly 200 different colleges in 39 states, the District of Columbia, and two foreign countries and earned nearly $47 MILLION DOLLARS IN SCHOLARSHIPS. Today, they had their senior signing day where they had the opportunity to officially share with our community their decision for the future! To keep our families informed of the impact of COVID on our school, we continue reporting our positive COVID cases each week via the Rocket Report.
- This week, (reporting from Friday 4/29 to Wednesday 5/4; AHS had 13 new positive COVID cases – 12 students and 1 faculty/staff member.
- Since the start of this semester, AHS has had 227 positive COVID cases. 199 were students and 28 were faculty/staff.
As you can see from the numbers above, AHS has seen an uptick in cases associated with our school this week (which is a short week due to Oaks Day). While we will remain mask optional at this time, we want to reinforce the importance of not sending your daughter to school if she is experiencing any COVID-like symptoms. When in doubt, contact our school nurse, Laura Burnam, at 271-2507, and have your daughter tested for COVID. That way we can minimize the spread of COVID in our school and help to keep our school community safe.
SCHOOL HOLIDAY: Friday, May 6, is a school holiday and the school will be closed.

In class meeting, each class heard from speakers regarding timely topics for their classes.
Next week, all students will be in homeroom to participate in a direction activity which will focus on the dangers of substance use. On Tuesday and Thursday, all classes will rotate between homeroom and class meeting for timely class topics. Additionally, seniors will be in homeroom on Thursday to engage with their homeroom families for the last time. 2021-2022 FAMILY COMPETITION WINNER: As our year comes closer to an end, it’s time to celebrate our family competition champion. This year’s winner is the Birr family! As a congratulations to Birr, they will be receiving a special celebratory tee shirt. This past Monday, Birr had the opportunity to celebrate their victory together in the courtyard with a popsicle party. In addition, all Birr family members may enjoy wearing spirit wear (following all spirit wear rules listed in the handbook) during exams May 24-May 27. Birr worked hard collecting for Canstruction, attending Assumption events, participating in drives, and performing well at our Family Olympics, which helped them earn their win. Congratulations to our Birr family on all their hard work throughout the year!
CELEBRATION OF ACHIEVEMENT: The Celebration of Achievement is an assembly held annually to recognize accomplishments of our underclasswomen in the areas of academics, service, fine arts, and leadership. Affectionately referred to as “The Rosies,” this assembly’s objectives include spotlighting the accomplishments of the current school year, encouraging and challenging students toward goals for the following year, and celebrating our year as a community. The assembly will be held in the gym from 1:50-2:55 p.m. on Friday, May 13.
BOOK BUYBACKS: We will conduct our book buybacks on Friday, May 27, from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. in the cafeteria. If students will be selling their books back to MBS Direct, they will need to go to their website after May 13, get a quote, and print out two (2) copies of the packing slip (three copies if you have more than six books). In order to take full advantage of the guaranteed buyback, students will need to log into the account used to purchase books when accessing book buyback online quotes. If you need assistance, please contact LAUREN LEGA. Please see this flyer for details and instructions.
ANNOUNCING WORK STUDY PROGRAM AT ASSUMPTION: For the 2022-2023 school year, Assumption will offer a work study program for interested students. END-OF-THE-YEAR TECHNOLOGY INFORMATION FOR ALL STUDENTS: One of our technology integration specialists will be sharing the following information with our students in one of their May class meetings.
- All students must turn in their Tablet PCs to the Boeckmann Lab by their last day of classes. Seniors must turn in their Tablet PCs on or before May 13, depending on their last exam. All other students need to turn them in on or before May 27.
- Graduating seniors may purchase their Tablet PCs for $5.00. However, they must turn them in and tell us then if they want to purchase them so we can remove the school software if they do. The graduates may pick up their purchased Tablet PCs starting the week of June 13. Come to the Boeckmann Lab Monday through Thursday from 9:00 a.m. -3:00 p.m.
- If a senior wants to purchase her Tablet PC, the $5.00 fee, (cash or check, no credit cards) will be collected when she comes to pick it up. A big thank you to all graduates who decide to give their Tablet PC back to the school.
- The PC warranty and accidental damage protection ends the day before graduation.
- Rising seniors may pick up their Tablet PCs starting the week of July 18 and rising sophomores and juniors starting the week of July 25. Come to the Boeckmann Lab Monday through Thursday from 9:00 a.m. -3:00 p.m. Tablet PCs can only be given to students who come with their school-issued case to pick up. Students who are experiencing any hardware issues (physical damage such as cracked screens, damaged plastics, etc.) with their Tablet PCs must bring their tablets to the Boeckmann Lab within 30 days of the accidental damage.

ASSUMPTION PARENT ORGANIZATION (APO) NEWS:
- Faculty/Staff Appreciation: A HUGE THANK YOU to all the parents who helped make the Faculty/Staff Appreciation Luncheon a success. With your generous donations, the festive Taco Tuesday luncheon, and gift card drawings made for a very special week for the faculty and staff. There were many smiles on the faces of some great people, and they were so touched by your kindness! Thank you to the many parents that supported this effort by donating to the special day and showing appreciation. We felt so much gratitude, and we appreciate our parents’ involvement and the support of the work of our faculty and staff!
- Call for Class Representatives: Are you interested in getting more involved in the APO? We are looking for class representatives for the 2022-2023 school year. It is a great way to meet other parents, get to know the parents in your daughter’s class, and help in a variety of ways throughout the year. For more information, please contact Laura Matis (APO President) at lauramatis@yahoo.com.
SUMMER ACADEMIC OPPORTUNITIES: Academic opportunities for the summer have been updated. You can find these on our guidance department page by clicking here: SUMMER ACADEMIC OPPORTUNITIES. There are numerous opportunities available with many costing less than $1,000. Programs are grouped according to areas of interest like STEM or creative arts/design or general summer pre-college programs, etc. Applications are due in March and require the assistance of guidance for transcript releases, recommendations, and other documentation. Please contact LEIGH JACKSON or KIM HABICH with any questions.
AHS SUMMER CAMPS: This year, Assumption is offering over 40 fun-filled enrichment and athletic sessions (including 10 co-ed opportunities) to all K-9 students. Our goal is for each camper to have an exciting, safe summer and build new friendships. Registration is linked here. Please share with family and friends. Contact LAUREN LEGA with any questions.
SENIOR PROM: Our seniors will have a special holiday from school on the day of their prom, next Friday, May 13. The Senior Prom will be held at the Crowne Plaza Hotel (by the airport and the fairgrounds) and starts at 6:30 p.m. The seniors and their guests need to arrive at the Crowne Plaza between 6 and 7 p.m., and dinner will be served at 7 p.m. Students arriving after 7:15 p.m. will not be admitted to the dance unless they have made prior arrangements with Mrs. Baughman, our dean of students. Prom ends at midnight; the girls and their guests are required to stay until at least 11 p.m., so they need to make arrangements for their chosen modes of transportation to pick them up no later than midnight. If something unfortunate would happen between now and May 13 and your daughter’s planned guest is no longer going to attend with her, please encourage your daughter to come anyway—she can come alone, with a group of girls, or with a friend (lots of our girls do this anyway so she won’t stand out). We just want her to come and celebrate this final, very special dance with the rest of her class, regardless of who does or does not come with her.
SENIOR EVENTS WEBPAGE: A reminder that important information about upcoming senior schedules and events is available on the AHS website on the Class of 2022 senior webpage linked here: CLASS OF 2022 SENIOR EVENTS WEBPAGE. Additionally, pictures, videos, programs, etc., from each celebratory senior event will be posted on this page following each event!
SENIOR EXIT SURVEYS: It’s May, and we can’t believe our seniors will be leaving us soon! Before they go, we wanted to provide an opportunity for them give us feedback on their Assumption experience. Next week, seniors will be sent a senior exit survey to complete. They will also be invited to chat with their principal, Mrs. Tedesco, in person about any of their answers to the survey questions as she hosts “Popsicles with the Principal” during all lunches on Tuesday, May 10, in the senior courtyard. Please encourage your senior daughter to complete her survey by next Monday, May 16, and visit with Mrs. Tedesco to chat and enjoy a celebratory popsicle on Tuesday!
CLASS OF 2022 YARD SIGNS: Seniors received their Class of 2022 yard sign at the end of Senior Celebration. We have asked the seniors to take a picture with their yard sign and upload it using this form.
SPECIAL NOTE ABOUT GRADUATION TICKETS: If your family will not be using all eight (8) of the allotted graduation tickets that were handed out to your senior two weeks ago, please have her bring them to the main office so they can be distributed to another senior who is in need of extra tickets. Thank you!
JUNIOR RING CEREMONY: Attention, all junior parents: Junior Ring Ceremony is Sunday, May 15, at 2:00 p.m. at St. Raphael. Students will need to be arrive no later than 1:45 and should meet their homeroom teacher and family behind St. Raphael by the basketball courts. Students are welcome to invite up to four (4) guests to attend this wonderful celebration and may enter St. Raphael upon arrival to be seated. We are looking forward to this very special celebration for our juniors as we mark the passing of leadership to the Class of 2023. Special reminder about rings: If your student did not order a ring from Balfour, they will need to bring their own ring/jewelry with them and hold onto it for the ceremony. If your student ordered a ring from Balfour, the junior class moderator will bring the ring to the ceremony and give it to the student.
The nearly 50 students in our community who logged at least 10 books in this year’s 40 Books Challenge.
The 18 seniors in the class of 2022 who have completed the coursework and requirements for AP Capstone. This diploma program from the College Board is based on two yearlong AP courses: AP Seminar and AP Research. Rather than teaching subject-specific content, these courses develop students’ skills in research, analysis, evidence-based arguments, collaboration, writing, and presenting. In the last two weeks, the students’ work has culminated in a formal presentation and oral defense, an evening showcase where they shared their work with the greater Assumption community, and the submission of a 4,000-5,000 word academic research paper that addressed a gap in a discipline of their choosing.
