Dear Parents,

With our record-breaking Rocket Raffle sales earlier this year, our students earned two incentives: an official day off of school on Friday, March 27 (the Friday before Spring Break) and our students get to wear their beloved Halloween costumes to school on Thursday, October 31.  Please encourage your daughters to review the costume rules that have been announced and emailed to them this week so that our community can have a fun, safe, and appropriate Halloween celebration!

CALENDAR NOTE:

  • ALL SAINTS DAY MASS AND ALL SOULS REMEMBRANCE: The Assumption community will celebrate All Saints Day on Friday, November 1, with a Mass at St. Raphael at 10:05 a.m. We will be honoring the saints who have come before us as well as those in our own lives.  Because November 2 is All Souls Day, we are also inviting family members of AHS alumnae who have died in the past year to join us for Mass on November 1.  Then during the week of November 4, students will have a special All Souls remembrance to prayerfully recognize the names of family members of anyone in the AHS community who has died during the past year as well as the names of ALL Assumption alumnae who have passed on at any time.   We will ask students to share the names of any family members they may have lost this past year so they can be part of this special remembrance, and we invite you to do the same.  If you have lost a family member in the past year, please send this person’s full name to GAIL KING  by Friday, October 25.

CAMPUS MINISTRY:

  • PARENT PRAYER:  The Parent Prayer group meets each Tuesday morning from 8:15-8:45 a.m. in the chapel at St. Catherine’s Convent, which is right across Tyler Lane from AHS.  Just look for the sign! If you are unable to attend but would like them to pray for a particular intention, please email it to our campus minister MARY ANN STEUTERMANN.We hope you find comfort in knowing that we are praying for your intention even if you can’t be present.

ABSENCES AND PARTICIPATION IN EXTRACURRICULAR ACTIVITIES/AFTER SCHOOL EVENTS REMINDER:  If your daughter is absent from school on a given day, she may NOT participate in any extracurricular activities or attend any school event held that same day. A student must be present at school for at least two hours in order to go to a sports practice or musical or theater rehearsal, attend a ball game or a club activity, participate in an athletic event or school performance, even if it is for another school that partners with Assumption, etc. If there are special circumstances involved, please note this when letting us know that your daughter will be absent and ask if an exception might be made and Mrs. Baughman will be happy to consider the request. All our coaches, moderators, and activity sponsors know this policy and may not require–and should not expect–a student to attend or participate in whatever the activity or event is if you were absent from school that day.

HALLOWEEN COSTUMES ON OCTOBER 31:  We are so proud of the student body for not only meeting but exceeding our stretch Rocket Raffle ticket sales goal of 3,000 tickets in our 37th annual Walk for Assumption.  By selling 3,792 tickets, the student body has earned the privilege of wearing Halloween costumes to school on Thursday, October 31.  As with every privilege, this one comes with some responsibilities!  Students will be expected to follow the costume rules, which will be emailed to the student body, posted on Sharepoint, and reviewed via announcements prior to next Friday.  Some key highlights of these rules include:

  • Students must be in full costume or full uniform.
  • Costumes must be appropriate for a Catholic school, must be inoffensive, and must cover the student from neck to knees.
  • No bathing suits or undergarments may be worn over clothing, and tights/leggings/yoga pants may NOT be worn unless they are worn under a skirt or shorts.
  • Students may wear shoes of ANY color; however, for safety reasons, all other shoe policies apply.

As noted above, detailed rules will be shared in advance for the students’ planning purposes.  If your daughter has questions after reviewing the rules, please encourage her to email either THERESA SCHUHMANN or CINDI BAUGHMAN.

SOCIAL SECURITY CARD:  Please make sure we have a copy of your daughter’s Social Security card on file so we can properly submit each student’s end-of-year grading info to the Kentucky Higher Education Association, which provides scholarship monies to students who qualify (KEES money).  There is a time when it becomes too late for us to submit the KEES report, so making sure we have the copy of the student card on file now ensures the proper documentation can be submitted before a student graduates and the deadline runs out.  Please contact registrar KATHY FLEISCHER  with any questions or to confirm or verify information we have on file.

COMPETITIVE SUMMER PROGRAMS:  Parents of juniors interested in applying for the Governor’s Scholars Program (GSP):  Juniors were invited to attend one of two informational meetings on September 26 and 30 about the application process for this program.  Applications are due to the Guidance Office on Wednesday, November 13, at 8:05 a.m.  A timeline, helpful online links, and a checklist can be found here: GSP Timeline. Please contact KELLY KIRWAN regarding any questions about the application.

Two other programs available to students include the Governor’s School for the Arts (GSA) and the Governor’s School for Entrepreneurs (GSE). GSA is available for sophomore and junior students interested in the performing, visual, and creative arts.  The application deadline is Friday, January 10, 2020, and information can be found at here. Students serious about applying are strongly recommended to register and attend an Prep Workshop – register here.  GSE is available for freshmen, sophomores, and juniors interested in innovation in business.  The application will be available on November 15, 2019.  Information about GSE can be found at http://kentuckygse.com/. Students may earn scholarships to attend schools in Kentucky if they are selected for any of these programs. If a student is interested in GSA or GSE, she needs to contact her guidance counselor.

ROCKET PARENT NETWORK (RPN) NEWS:  As we continue our parent educational series, we want to take a look at Emotional & Mental Health Issues. We also invite you to learn more about the Mindfulness program at AHS. This innovative program aims to ease anxiety and optimize learning and is supported by research in the positive effects of mindfulness programs in schools.

CANSTRUCTION:  Canstruction is coming up! Canstruction is one of the biggest events in our Assumption community. This event provides the opportunity to donate to Dare to Care by bringing in canned goods to those in need.  An Assumption tradition since 2006, Canstruction not only provides food for the community at large (over 15,000 pounds of food last year!), but also provides an opportunity for family bonding. The families collect cans in their homerooms, and they work within their families to create sculptures out of the cans before they are donated to Dare to Care.  Last year, we collected a total of 16,781 cans; this year our goal is to beat that! Canstruction is Monday, November 25, so that will be the last collection day, but we will begin collecting cans on November 1.   We are looking forward to having the Assumption community help the Louisville community through our partnership with Dare to Care!

CAMPUS STORE HOURS: To better serve our community, we are making a change to our campus store hours. The store will be open from 1:00 – 4:00 p.m. Monday through Friday and other times by appointment. Included on the website will be additional evening and holiday hours for the 2019-2020 school year. Students may drop off any order forms to athletic office or leave them in the campus store lockbox located directly outside of the campus store. Please contact the athletic department for any of your campus store needs at 502-271-2555.

ROSE THEATRE PRODUCTION:  Rose Theatre Company is proud to present the deviously delicious Broadway sci-fi smash musical, Little Shop of Horrors! Inspired by the B-movies of the 1960s, Little Shop has devoured the hearts of theatre goers for over 30 years. The meek floral assistant, Seymour Kelborn, stumbles across a new breed of plant he names Audrey II – after his coworker crush. General performances will be November 1 and 2 at 7:00 p.m., November 3 at 2:00 p.m., and November 7-10 at 7:00 p.m. To purchase tickets, please visit www.showtix4u.com and search for Little Shop of Horrors. Contact COLLEEN MURPHY if you or anyone in your party requires seating without the use of stairs or with the use of a wheelchair. Little Shop of Horrors is appropriate for ages 10 and up.

ROCKET BASKETBALL HALLOWEEN TRIVIA NIGHT: The Assumption basketball team will be hosting its 2nd Annual Halloween Trivia Night on Friday, October 25 at the newly renovated American Legion building across the street from Assumption.  Last year was a party with over 100 people joining the fun!  This year’s party starts at 7:00 p.m. – doors open at 6:30. The cost is $25 per person / $200 for a table of 8.  Costumes are encouraged.  Prizes will be awarded for best costume!  For more information or to reserve your table, please contact Linda Nalley at 502-609-6900 or lindanalley@gmail.com.

LAST CALL FOR ROSE AWARD NOMINATIONS: The Rose Award is a $5,000 grant endowed by an anonymous donor to recognize an Assumption employee who serves as a role model and is a positive influence in our community.
