Dear Parents,

A Statement from the Community of Assumption

At Assumption, we recognize that COVID-19 is not the only pandemic taking innocent lives in our country today. As a Catholic community devoted to the Gospel of Jesus and the vision of the Sisters of Mercy, we are devastated by the racism and violence that have dominated the recent news. The tragic deaths of George Floyd, Ahmaud Arbery and Breonna Taylor, among many others, are stark reminders that we live in a world challenged by racism and other forms of injustice and are contradictory to the values of faith, compassion, integrity, and excellence that are pillars of Assumption’s mission.

A hallmark of an Assumption education steeped in the Mercy charism calls us to help our students develop a strong voice to advocate for positive change to address the Critical Concerns of the Sisters of Mercy: Earth; Immigration; Nonviolence; Racism; Women. This is why we, the Community of Assumption, are compelled to stand together with our brothers and sisters of all races, creeds, and backgrounds in condemning all acts of racism and praying for peace in our local, national, and global communities.

Our community holds all those who suffer in prayer during this difficult time. But as a Catholic school sponsored by the Sisters of Mercy we know it is incumbent on us not only to pray, but also to teach our students how to step up and speak out in non-violent resistance to injustice in all its forms. And we gratefully recognize the many students, parents, families, and friends of Assumption who join with us in the important work. Together as the Community of Assumption, we will make a difference. On Monday, we emailed our students resources to assist them in their response to current events.  We wanted to also share these resources with you:  https://www.ahsrockets.org/ahs-newsroom/assumption-news/2020/06/02/a-special-statement-from-the-community-of-assumption/

Please join us in prayer:

Good and gracious God,
Who loves and delights in all people,
we stand in awe before You,
knowing that the spark of life within each person on earth is the spark of your divine life.

Differences among cultures and races are multicolored manifestations of Your Light.

May our hearts and minds be open to celebrate similarities and differences among our sisters and brothers.

We place our hopes for racial harmony in our committed action and in Your Presence in our Neighbor.

May all peoples live in Peace.
Amen.

START OF THE SCHOOL YEAR: We continue to await more information regarding CDC guidelines and directives from the governor regarding the possible return to school in the fall.  Specific rules or restrictions that will impact our planning have not been issued yet. As we wait for this information, we are researching best practices from educational leaders and communicating with the archdiocese and schools across the city and nation to develop plans for all possible scenarios for in-person and/or virtual learning in August.  At this time, we plan to continue with our scheduled start day in August as outlined in our tentative listing of important calendar dates on our website: IMPORTANT CALENDAR DATES 2020-2021.  We will communicate any updates as soon as we have them.

MAIN OFFICE AVAILABILITY:  To adhere to state mandates in response to the coronavirus and to continue to keep our entire community safe and healthy, our school building will remain closed to visitors until Monday, June 15.  If you need assistance during this time, please call Amy Schelb at 458-9551, option 0, or email at amy.schelb@ahsrockets.org.  Parents are asked to email or mail any school-related items instead of dropping them off at school.  If you do need to physically bring something to school, please contact Amy Schelb to schedule an appointment.   We will be publishing a revised schedule for June 15 and beyond very soon.

CURRENT PARENT SURVEY FOR STRATEGIC PLANNING:  AHS is developing its next strategic plan, and we need parent input to help define what success will look like for our school in the future.  We have extended the deadline for the survey and ask that you please take a few minutes and give us your feedback.  The survey will remain open until TODAY, Friday, June 5 at 5:00 p.m. Link to survey:  Strategic Planning Survey to Parents.  We have also extended the deadline for our Current Student Survey for Strategic Planning and we ask parents to encourage their daughters to take the survey that has been emailed and provide us their input.

SUMMER READING:  Students received their summer reading requirements in English classes the last week of classes.  These requirements can also be found on the website through this link: SUMMER READING. Summer reading is an important component of the English curriculum, and the books read in the summer will be incorporated into the first unit of study in your daughter’s English class next school year.  PLEASE NOTE: If a student decides to make any schedule changes over the summer that result in a change in academic level for English, she is required to read the book assigned for that level, which may be a different book and/or a different assignment.  She will need to find the correct summer reading assignment on the website.

INCOMING FRESHMEN – CLASS OF 2024 IMPORTANT INFORMATION: Please continue to reference the special Class of 2024 website page for updates on important information for our freshmen.  You will still receive emails as communication, but you can always check back to the site for reference and any documents you may need.  PLEASE NOTE: All forms from registration that need to be turned in should be scanned and emailed OR sent by snail mail.  We cannot accept pictures of forms or accept drop-offs at school at this time. We hope that your daughter enjoyed her special delivery this week! If you have any additional questions or she did not receive her delivery, please feel free to contact the Main Office at 502-458-9551.

SHAHEEN’S JUNE UNIFORM SALE: Shaheen’s is once again open to the public and is celebrating with a special Uniform Sale through the month of June. You are invited to buy uniforms early and receive 15% off storewide discount. Please check out the Shaheen’s Flier for information about temporary store hours and discount information. We hope you will consider taking advantage of this special opportunity, especially if your daughter has grown over the past year and her uniform no longer fits properly or is beyond repair.  Rising sophomores will need ACTS pants for next year. If your non-senior daughter gets cold and would like to wear a sweatshirt at school, she will need to purchase a uniform quarter-zip sweatshirt if she doesn’t already have one. The June Uniform Sale would be a great time to make these purchases.  A neat and appropriate uniform teaches our students to have pride in their own appearance as well as in their school, so we ask for your help by investing in your daughter’s uniform for the 2020-2021 school year.

Gratefully,

Martha Tedesco

Principal
