April 21, 2023

Director of Mission Effectiveness, Mary Ann Steutermann
Like the rest of the Louisville community, Assumption is devastated by the loss of life due to violence in our city. We have offered several opportunities to help students process these tragedies and support peace.
- During the past two weeks, we have used our morning prayers over the PA to ask God for many things. We’ve asked God to comfort all those who grieve the loss a family member or friend and all those worried by a loved one’s injury. We have thanked God for the bravery and skill of first responders and medical professionals involved. And we have asked for the strength to do what we can to promote non-violence.
- On Thursday during lunch, students were invited into the Atrium to stand in a circle where they heard a message of hope, love, and encouragement and to pray for peace. Many faculty and staff members wore white as a symbol of peace. They stood in solidarity to remind our students about how much we care about them.
- On Thursday after school, students were invited to advocate for public policy measures related to gun violence and mental health that align with the policy positions of the Catholic Church and the Sisters of Mercy. Both support laws that ban assault weapons, implement universal background checks for gun purchases, and address mental health issues among other measures. For more specific information on the Church’s position, click here. For more specific information on the Sisters of Mercy’s position, click here.
- On Friday during lunch, students were invited to write a note to one or more of the families of the victims recent violence. The Campus Ministry office will compile them and send them to these families.

We experienced another favorite Assumption tradition today during our spring pep rally, the bleacher dances! We are so proud of all of our girls, their passion and spirit that they put into each of the dances. The Assumption magic was alive and rocking today in the gym!

ROSE THEATRE COMPANY’S SPRING PLAY: Based on the iconic 1985 Paramount movie which was inspired by the classic Hasbro board game, Clue is a hilarious farce-meets-murder mystery. The tale begins at a remote mansion where six mysterious guests assemble for an unusual dinner party where murder and blackmail are on the menu. When their host turns up dead, they all become suspects. Led by Wadsworth (the butler), Miss Scarlet, Professor Plum, Mrs. White, Mr. Green, Mrs. Peacock, and Colonel Mustard race to find the killer as the body count stacks up. Clue is the comedy whodunit that will leave both cult fans and newcomers in stitches as they try to figure out…WHO did it, WHERE, and with WHAT!? Performances will be April 22, 27, and 29 at 7 p.m., April 23 and 30 at 2 p.m. Tickets are available at www.showtix.com. You can use this link or go to Showtix and search for “Assumption.” If you or anyone in your party needs assistance with handicap accessibility, please contact Colleen Murphy at colleen.murphy@ahsrockets.org.
SENIOR CELEBRATION DAY: On Friday, April 28, the class of 2023 will participate in Senior Celebration Day. Seniors will report to school by 8:15 a.m. as usual but may wear shorts and Senior Celebration Day team t-shirts. The senior class will spend the day participating in a mind, body, and spirit field day, which will culminate with a class picture and class cookout in the courtyard. Seniors will be dismissed at 1:15 p.m.
PINK AND WHITE GAME: The sixteenth annual Pink and White Game will be held at Trinity High School on Friday, April 28, at 7:00 p.m. Opening ceremonies will begin at 6:30 p.m. The gates will open at 5:30 p.m. Tickets will NOT be sold at the door. Students may purchase tickets during lunches in the cafeteria the week of April 24; tickets are $10.00. Assumption, Sacred Heart, St. X, and Trinity each receive a ticket allotment to sell to their communities. We are encouraging students to arrange with their family and friends at St. X, Trinity, and Sacred Heart to buy their tickets at their own schools. In order to ensure that all students have the opportunity to buy a ticket from Assumption’s allotted tickets, on Monday, April 24, each student may buy only one ticket for herself. For the remainder of the week, students may buy a maximum of two tickets per day. Tickets will be sold to students only. There will be no outside sales. Please note: All schools have agreed that there will be no tailgating at this event, and we highly encourage carpooling to the game!

PARENT PRAYER – PINK & WHITE EDITION: Each year before the Pink & White Game, the parents of Catholic high school students come together for a joint prayer service. Please join us for this year’s Parent Prayer on Thursday, April 27, at 8:30 a.m. at Sacred Heart. Please enter SHA through the main entrance and greeters will direct you to the service. And those who usually come to our own AHS Parent Prayer on Tuesdays, please be aware that we will NOT meet on April 25 since the special service is on April 27.

This past week, freshmen, sophomores, juniors, and seniors prepared for an Assumption tradition—the annual bleacher dance competition held at Friday’s pep rally, which also honored spring sports.
Next week, all grade levels will have a two-day RTI event on Monday and Tuesday. This means that during Lead & Learn time, all students will have the opportunity to use that time to engage in academic pursuits. They will be able to get extra help with content knowledge, work on projects, or work independently on homework or study for tests. On Thursday, students will hear the latest presentation from our Broadcast Journalism class. On Friday, freshmen, sophomores, and juniors will hear speeches from class leadership candidates and also hear important reminders about the Pink and White Game.

AP EXAMS: AP Exams will be held the first two weeks of May. Important information about the testing days and testing site as well as how to help your daughter be prepared can be found through these links: AP EXAM SCHEDULE and AP EXAM GENERAL INFORMATION
NO WORK IT WEDNESDAY NEXT WEEK: The Achievement Center will NOT be hosting a Work It Wednesday next week on April 26 due to a faculty meeting. WIW will return in May along with exam study groups. Stay tuned to next week’s Rocket Report for academic support opportunities in May.

PARKING FOR JUNIORS AND SENIORS FOR NEXT YEAR: Our current sophomores and juniors have already been given information about applying for parking spaces for next year. Students need to have their driver’s license (not just a permit) by August 10 to apply for a parking space before school starts and begin driving to school on the first day of the new school year; those who won’t have licenses by August 10 but will have them by Labor Day may apply for a space now, but it won’t be assigned until after school starts and they get their licenses. Juniors and seniors who won’t be ready to start driving to school until after Labor Day will just come to the main office to request a parking space whenever they are ready. Because we believe that if the girls are mature and responsible enough to drive to school, they should be mature and responsible enough to listen to announcements, read email, submit their own parking requests online, and work with school personnel to resolve any difficulties they have related to applying for parking, we will work only with students (not parents) on parking issues, and we will not be sending detailed information about applying for parking to parents. That said, to help parents of rising juniors and seniors encourage their daughters in taking care of parking business themselves, here are some key dates the girls will need to keep in mind:
- Monday, July 24, 3:00 p.m.: Deadline for submitting a parking request for space assignment before school starts
- Monday, July 24, 3:00 p.m.: Deadline for having passengers set up in CarpoolToSchool.com (the number of other AHS students in the carpool on this date will determine the priority for assigning parking).
If your daughter wants to drive to school next year, please encourage her to consider giving a ride to another student to/from school, practice, etc. It builds community, is good for the environment, and helps Assumption be a good neighbor by reducing the amount of school-related traffic on Bardstown Road in the morning and afternoons. As has been the case for at least 15 years, priority in assigning parking will be given to students with carpools and will not be based on seniority.
CARPOOL INFORMATION FOR PARENTS: Assumption is pleased to announce that we will again partner with CarpoolToSchool.com for the 2023-2024 school year. This online service creates an Assumption-only network that allows parents and students to set up carpools to and/or from school that others can then join or request to join a carpool to/from school that has already been set up by another AHS parent or by an AHS junior or senior who drives to school. As noted in the information about student parking above, this is one of the many ways that we build community, respect the environment, and try to be good neighbors by reducing the amount of school-related traffic on Bardstown Road. Parents of incoming freshmen and rising sophomores should be receiving an email from CarpoolToSchool.com on Monday, May 8, inviting them to participate (check your junk folder if you don’t see it in your Inbox). Parents of rising juniors and seniors who are interested in using this service (instead of having their daughters do it themselves) may log on to CarpoolToSchool and create a new account or access an already existing account; just “request a new password” if you don’t remember what you set up previously. Parents who have general questions about CarpoolToSchool may contact Tatum Park in the main office; those needing technical help with the CarpoolToSchool website are encouraged to use the LiveChat feature on the CTS website (Monday through Friday from 7 a.m.-7 p.m.) or contact Mrs. Park for assistance.
LEAD4CHANGE MENSTRUAL PRODUCTS DRIVE: A group of juniors working on a Lead4Change leadership service project have learned a lot about “period poverty.” Nearly one in five girls in the U.S. miss school when they have their periods because they don’t have appropriate products. Therefore, they are holding a drive at AHS on April 24 and 25 to collect menstrual products including pads, tampons, dark underwear, and feminine wipes. Donated items will go to Jilly Pad, which is a nonprofit organization with a period pantry that provides fee supplies in West Louisville. If you’d like to support their efforts, please send in products with your daughter!
ACT TEST PREP FOR SOPHOMORES AND JUNIORS: We are offering our students the opportunity to partner with TorchPrep, an innovative test training program that cracks the code on improving ACT scores. TorchPrep has continually yielded outstanding ACT scores for our students. Last year, Assumption students who participated in TorchPrep saw an average score increase of 2.3 points. All courses include 30 hours of direct training, four full-length simulated tests, TorchPrep training manual, customized study plan, and guaranteed results. The training program will take place at Assumption June 5-8 from 9:00 a.m.- 4:30 p.m. Early registration deadline is May 29. More information about programs, registration, and fees can be found at www.torchprep.com.
SUMMER ACADEMIC OPPORTUNITIES: Academic opportunities for the summer have been UPDATED. You can find these on our guidance department page by clicking here: SUMMER OPPORTUNITIES 2023. There are numerous opportunities available with many costing less than $1,000. Programs are grouped according to areas of interest like STEM or Creative Arts/Design or General Summer Pre-College Programs, etc. Many applications are due in March and require the assistance of guidance for transcript releases, recommendations, and other documentation. Please contact LEIGH JACKSON or KIM HABICH with any questions.
BUS DRIVER NEEDED: Assumption High School is seeking a bus driver for daily short runs to athletic fields, local retreat centers, and field trips. Applicants should be able to provide the following: High school diploma or GED and a valid Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with a school bus endorsement to transport students. Applicants must have evidence of a good driving record, be 21 years of age or older, and pass a background check. Applicants may stop by or contact the main office for an application. If you have questions or need more information, contact the school at (502) 271-2523 or email jenny.friedenberg@ahsrockets.org.

SENIOR PARENT LETTER: An email was sent out on Thursday, April 13, to parents of seniors giving details about senior activities and graduation events that will be occurring in April and May, including a link to the Class of 2023 senior events website page. If you are a senior parent and did not receive this email, please click on this website link to view this important information: CLASS OF 2023 SENIOR EVENTS WEBPAGE
