Friday, October 30, 2020

Dear Parents/Guardians,

We had a very successful Testing Day yesterday with great attendance!  Thank you, again, to our parents for your understanding and support as we made the unexpected change to the PSAT this week.  We are excited that we were able to give every student a standardized testing opportunity in October.

It was great fun to have our students, faculty , and staff in their Halloween costumes this week! As you know, at the end of last week, we announced the successful outcome of our Canstruction 2020 event—We CAN Do It 2020 in which we collected money to support Dare to Care.  Every $1 we collected equaled three meals for the hungry in the Louisville community.  As of last Friday, we had collected $7, 777 or 23,333 meals which far surpassed our goal to provide 20,000 meals for the incentive of wearing Halloween costumes.  Given these incredible results with this year’s unusual circumstances for collections and knowing that several members of our community had noted that they had forgotten their money to donate on in-person days, we made an exception that never happens at Assumption  We provided one more collection day for each cohort with the incentive that if we collected a minimum of $557 we would reach 25,000 meals served to the Louisville community. As of the Wednesday deadline for donations, the Assumption community collected an additional $1901 for a total donation of $9678 to Dare to Care providing 29,034 meals!  We could not be any prouder.  As a result, students, faculty, and staff have earned the incentive to wear Spirit Wear every school day next week.

We continue to monitor our number of COVID-19 positive cases associated with our school, and we continue to report this information to our school community.  As of yesterday, Assumption’s COVID-19 numbers for this week are:

  • 3 new positive COVID-19 cases this week.
  • No new quarantine cases this week.
  • 30 total positive COVID-19 cases as reported to our local department of health as of August 1, 2020 (26 students and 4 staff).

Our three positive cases are students who have not been on campus, so no school wide notification needed to be sent.  It’s important to note that there have been no known transmissions of COVID here at AHS.

CALENDAR NOTES FOR NEXT WEEK:

FROM CAMPUS MINISTRY:

  • PARENT PRAYER: The Parent Prayer group meets each Tuesday morning from 8:30-9:00 a.m. in the chapel in the McAuley Center (formerly St. Catherine’s Convent), which is right across Tyler Lane from AHS.  Parents should park in the AHS lot in a visitor space or in any open space.  Parking is no longer available at the McAuley Center itself, so parents will need to cross Tyler Lane from the AHS lot to enter the McAuley Center. If you are unable to attend but would like for the group to pray for a particular intention, please email it to our campus minister at maryann.steutermann@ahsrockets.org We hope you find comfort in knowing that we are praying for your intention even if you can’t be present. New Zoom option for parent prayer: If you are unable to join us in person, please consider joining us via Zoom on Tuesdays @ 8:30 a.m. by using this link and ID/Password:  Join Zoom Meeting: https://us04web.zoom.us/j/75488139027?pwd=UDQrM3BDWlZRbElEbWdUL1FQRE4wZz09, Meeting ID: 754 8813 9027, passcode: prayer.

REMINDERS FROM THE REGISTRAR:

  • CLASS OF 2021 INFORMATION CONFIRMATION MAILING:  Parents of the Class of 2021:  On October 13, a letter was mailed to your home with important information about your daughter’s legal name.  It contained a form asking for confirmation of the spelling/accuracy of your daughter’s name for official graduation documents and programs.  It is due in the school office by Friday, November 6.  Even if no changes need to be made, please make sure to return a signed copy to the main office by November 6.
  • AP EXAM INVOICES: Students in AP classes who have registered to take AP exams or submit AP portfolios in May have been emailed invoices for the cost of the exams.  All fees are due at Assumption no later than Friday, November 6.  Please send a check made out to Assumption High School and be sure to include your daughter’s name and “AP FEE” on the check subject line.  If you have any questions about the invoice sent to your daughter to cover the cost of her AP exams, please contact Kathy.fleischer@ahsrockets.org.
  • SOCIAL SECURITY CARD:  Please make sure we have a copy of your daughter’s Social Security card on file so we can properly submit her end-of-year grading info to the Kentucky Higher Education Association, which provides scholarship monies to students who qualify (KEES money).  There is a time when it becomes too late for us to submit the KEES report, so making sure we have the copy of the student card on file now ensures the proper documentation can be submitted before your daughter graduates and the deadline runs out.  Please contact registrar Kathy Fleischer  with any questions or to confirm or verify information we have on file.

ACT SCORES – A Message for Parents of Juniors and Seniors who took the October 6 Test at Assumption High School:  Your daughter received an email on Thursday afternoon from our registrar, Kathy Fleischer.  This email contained your daughter’s uniquely assigned ACT ID number and a link to this supplement  which will help her create an account on MyACT.org.  We expect most students to be able to see their scores here.  If she cannot, have your daughter contact Judy.Fieldhouse@ahsrockets.org on Monday; she should have access to their scores by that time.  If your daughter is having trouble creating an account or accessing her scores, or if she created an account without using her ACT ID number, please check out the FAQS or contact ACT Customer Care at https://www.act.org/content/act/en/contact-act.html for assistance.

ROCKET RAFFLE AND WALK FOR ASSUMPTION: This year The Walk for Assumption (which typically takes place in September) will take place in April 2021!  The WALK is our largest fundraising event that our students participate in each year, and it is connected to our Annual Rocket Spectacular, which will take place virtually this year on Saturday, January 30, 2021 (more details to come).

How are the Walk for Assumption and the Rocket Spectacular connected?  Through the Rocket Raffle.  In order to participate in the Walk for Assumption, students must sell a minimum of three Rocket Raffle tickets. Tickets cost $25 each, and the purchaser is entered into a drawing for $20,000, which will take place at our Rocket Spectacular on Saturday, January 30, 2021.  Students who turn in a minimum of three tickets will receive a Walk for AHS T-shirt before we walk in the spring and will be eligible for great incentives in the weeks before Christmas break.

Tickets may be purchased online.  More information will be shared with students about this.  Paper tickets will be distributed to the Blue Cohort on Friday, November 13 and to the Maroon Cohort on Monday, November 16.  Tickets for the Pink Cohort will be mailed home Thursday, November 12.

The deadline for ticket sales is Tuesday, December 1 for the Maroon Cohort and Thursday, December 3 for the Blue Cohort.  Tickets will be collected in study hall on hybrid students’ in-person days of instruction.  Collection information will be provided to Pink Cohort students.

As we look forward to the Walk in the spring, the Family Council has a great theme and great T-shirts planned. But as a community, the best part of this fun event is coming together! We ask all students to be a part of this effort to support each other.  More than 225 students currently receive financial assistance at Assumption and there are always circumstances that arise in which we may need to help another student. The exciting journey through the Assumption adventure begins with a single step, and there is no better way to get ready for this great Assumption tradition than by helping your daughter sell her Rocket Raffle Tickets! If you have any questions, please contact Tricia Ferree tricia.ferree@ahsrockets.org.

RPN (Rocket Parent Network) NEWS: Did you miss the October 27 meeting featuring local therapist Eric Baker?  Eric spoke on the topic of “Teens and Mental Health During the Pandemic.”   Please visit the RPN webpage to download a handout featuring his suggestions to parents.  Link to RPN Page. If you would like to view a recording of the session, please email dawn.deweese@ahsrockets.org

COMPETITIVE SUMMER PROGRAMS:  Parents of juniors interested in applying for the Governor’s Scholars Program (GSP):  All juniors were sent a narrated PowerPoint last week covering the program’s purpose and application process. Students were also invited to attend one of two virtual Q&A meetings on September 30 and October 1. These virtual meetings held on Teams provided students the chance to ask questions about the information covered in the PowerPoint.  Applications are due to the Guidance Office the week of November 9. Due dates are dependent on a student’s cohort: Maroon Cohort – due Tuesday, November 10, by 8:25 a.m.; Blue Cohort – due Thursday, November 12 by 8:25 a.m. Any student in the All Virtual/Pink Cohortneeds to contact kelly.kirwan@ahsrockets.org to schedule a drop-off by Thursday, November 12, by 8:25 a.m. Click on GSP POWERPOINT and TIMELINE to access the information shared with students. Please contact KELLY KIRWAN regarding any questions about the application.

ROSE THEATRE PRODUCTION:  Rose Theatre Company will host an outdoor production of Spoon River Project based on the work of Edgar Lee Masters at 7:00 p.m. on October 30, October 31, November 6, and November 7. We are pleased to announce that Rose Theatre’s fall production will take place at Historic Farmington’s Brand Pavilion, just down the road from Assumption! Tickets are available now through Showtix4u at https://www.showtix4u.com/events/1128. Spoon River Project tells the story of a small town through a series of monologues delivered by deceased town members coming back from the dead to share their stories. The play, set in a fictional graveyard in the town of Spoon River, was able to be rehearsed remotely for much of the process. The event will be an outdoor production. Seating is socially distanced, and masks will be worn at all times. Tickets must be purchased in advance and are nonrefundable but fully transferable. If you need assistance with accessibility or have questions, contact Colleen Murphy at colleen.murphy@ahsrockets.org.

EDUCATIONAL TRIP 2022:  We are excited to announce we will be offering a once-in-a-lifetime educational trip focused on World War II and the Holocaust in the summer of 2022. This trip was specifically designed by history teachers Beth Long and Megan Rose and will explore important events and places related to the Holocaust and World War II in Europe. The trip will begin in London with a visit to the Imperial War Museum, a guided sightseeing tour of London, and a visit to the Cabinet War Rooms.  We will then head to Normandy by ferry and visit the Arromanches Museum, the American Cemetery, and the Airborne Museum.  The trip will continue with tours in both Bastogne and Hanover before visiting Bergen-Belsen Concentration Camp. Next, we will travel to Berlin for a guided sightseeing tour, a visit to the Reichstag Dome, and a Holocaust Memorial visit.  While in Berlin we will also visit the House of the Wannsee Conference and the Gestapo Headquarters.  This trip is open to all current freshmen and sophomores.  Please join us at the Parent/Student Information Meeting on Thursday, November 5, at 6:30 p.m. via Zoom to learn more about this fantastic trip. If you have any questions before the initial meeting, please email Mrs. Long at beth.long@ahsrockets.org or Mrs. Rose at megan.rose@ahsrockets.org.

MAIN OFFICE AVAILABILITY:  To adhere to state mandates in response to COVID-19 and to continue to keep our entire community safe and healthy, we are continuing to recommend that parents email or mail any school-related items instead of dropping them off at school.   Assumption’s Main Office is open from 7:15 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday and 7:15 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. on Friday.  In line with Assumption’s Reopening and Learning Plan, visitors to the school will continue to be limited.  Any visitor who has an appointment requiring them to come into the building should come to the Tyler Lane door, ring the buzzer, and will be met there.  Visitors must wear a mask, undergo a temperature scan, and complete a health screening before entering the building.  Please feel free to contact Amy Schelb at 502-458-9551, option 0, or email at amy.schelb@ahsrockets.org for questions regarding the above or if you need assistance during this time.

Gratefully,

Martha Tedesco
