Abby Asfahl ’04, Class of 2024

Year started at Assumption: 2012

Family: Tullamore

Why is it important to you to have the same students all four years?
“This is one of my very favorite features of our counseling program. Having the same students every year means we are able to develop true connections to our students. We get to know them well, and they learn to trust us. It’s so valuable that students and parents don’t have to get a new counselor “up to speed” with each new school year, because that counselor has been part of their high school journey from the beginning. And, as a counselor, it is so rewarding to watch my students grow and develop from freshman first day to graduation.”

In your words, what makes our counseling department stand out from other schools in the area?
“Our counseling department is ingrained into the culture of Assumption. As a result, teachers readily partner with us to support students, and students don’t hesitate to come to us with concerns. There isn’t a stigma around receiving mental health support because it’s a normal part of what we do at Assumption.”

In your words, what makes our counseling department stand out from other schools in the area?
“Our passion for our work and dedication to our students is unmatched. We all love what we do. We are a community within a community, and we all share the same goals of supporting, educating, and empowering young women.”

What do you like about splitting students by the alphabet and having your homeroom as your students?
“Dividing the alphabet provides us an opportunity to get to know our students on a deeper level. It’s a tradition that we take on every student in our homeroom. Over four years, we have bonds with our homeroom which makes for a seamless transition to begin talking about postsecondary plans.”

What is your favorite part about our community?
“The commitment of the faculty and staff. All the hours planning and executing all the things that make Assumption what it is – it’s awesome to see.

What do you like about splitting students by the alphabet and having your homeroom as your students?
“Dividing up the alphabet gives us the opportunity to get to know our students a little better and having our own Homeroom for four years really helps us get to know our students on another level.”
