Rocket Report – Tuesday, November 23, 2021
Dear Parents/Guardians,
We have much to be thankful for this week! Yesterday, we enjoyed a fun and successful Canstruction day. We are very proud to announce that we brought in 17,837 cans for Dare to Care – a school record! All families received family competition points for their can totals with Cork leading the way with the most cans brought in followed by Birr, Tullamore, and Booterstown, respectively. Thank you all so much for any little bit you were able to give that added up to this truly monumental amount of food for those in our community.
Today, we took special time to thank God for all of the blessings in our school community during our Thanksgiving Celebration prayer service. In addition, we announced the winner of the Assumption Rose Award given to a faculty or staff member who has made a significant difference in the lives of our students. Assumption is proud that Janet Adkins, social studies teacher, was our recipient of this award – congratulations to Mrs. Adkins!
We would like to wish all of our Rocket families a safe and happy Thanksgiving. We are thankful and offer this Thanksgiving prayer for each and every one of you!
Loving God,
We turn our hearts to you on this day for giving thanks, mindful of your many gifts.
For each one, we are grateful.
For each one, we are blessed.
For each one, we are open to the abundance of your love.
May this Thanksgiving Day offer a reminder to be generous with others, as you are with us.
We praise you.
We rejoice in you.
We give you thanks.
Amen.
— William H. Sadlier
CALENDAR NOTES:
- THANKSGIVING HOLIDAYS: Assumption will close for Thanksgiving break from Wednesday, November 24 – Friday, November 26.
- 12:30 DISMISSAL DAY: Friday, December 3, will be a 12:30 dismissal day so that faculty and staff can attend a special professional development session on adolescents and anxiety caused by the continued pandemic. After-school supervision will not be provided, so please make arrangements for your daughters to be picked up by 12:45 p.m.
CAMPUS MINISTRY:
- IMMACULATE CONCEPTION MASS: The Assumption community will celebrate Mass at St. Raphael on Wednesday, December 8, which is the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary, a holy day of obligation in the Catholic Church. To accommodate this, we will follow an 8:15 a.m. Wednesday arrival schedule on this day, not the 9:15 schedule we usually use on Wednesdays.
- ASSUMPTION PARENT PRAYER: Our parent prayer group continues to meet each Tuesday morning from 8:30 -9:00 a.m. in our new chapel. This group is more than just prayer; it’s community. It’s a chance for parents to pray for their daughters and their daughters’ friends, and time to get to know more Assumption parents. Please park in any open space and enter the school through the main entrance. Please join us for any or all of these opportunities!
SECOND SEMESTER SCHEDULES: Your daughter will receive her second semester schedule on Monday, December 6, during LEAD & Learn. Please take a moment to ask your daughter about her schedule and if needed, she can see her dean during her study hall on December 9 or 10. For any levels changes, she should already be in conversation with her teacher and will also need written approval from a parent. These forms are available in the main office. Of course, Judy Fieldhouse (A – K) and Theresa Schuhmann (L – Z) are always available if you have any questions or concerns.
CAREER DAY: Assumption students will be participating in our fifth annual Career Day on Tuesday, December 7. This event will take place during the school day. Students in all grade levels will participate in activities to help them think about careers and college. Freshmen will use our Naviance program to explore careers that match their interests and hear from alumnae speakers from Bellarmine University’s Career Development Center about how the habits they develop in high school and their academic progress have an impact on their future career pursuits. Sophomores and juniors will have the opportunity to learn about several careers including nursing, finance, engineering, event planning, and many others from alumnae who work in those fields. Seniors will be part of an alumnae panel focused on their program of study and career path planning as well as hear from a Centre College representative who will address questions related to major selection, student services, and how to be successful in college.
FLIK LUNCH ACCOUNT BALANCES: Please take a moment to review your daughter’s FLIK lunch account balance at www.myschoolbucks.com. You can add money to her account through myschoolbucks.com or bring a check to the school office/cafeteria mailbox. Email notifications have been going out to parents whose daughters currently have a low or negative balance. Please be aware that the notifications will come from either myschoolbucks.com (if you have it set up to automatically notify you of a low balance), or they will come from flik@ahsrockets.org or Victoria.Gavin@compass-usa.com
FINANCIAL AID FORM: The financial aid link for 2022-2023 has been added to the school’s website. The due date is January 31, 2022, and the form must be submitted online to FACTS Grant and Aid Assessment. FINANCIAL AID APPLICATION LINK. As a reminder, you are required to file every year to receive assistance.
YEARBOOK SENIOR TRIBUTES – Attention, parents of seniors: Just a reminder that submissions for “Senior Tributes” for the Rosecast (the yearbook) are due by Tuesday, November 23. If they are not submitted by November 23, there is a $10 late fee until Christmas Break, and after that a $20 late fee until Spring Break. After Spring Break we will not be able to accept any more submissions. Parents and guardians received a letter with directions as well as a contract on October 1 via email. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact Katie Culver at katie.culver@ahsrockets.org.
LEAD & LEARN UPDATE: During LEAD & Learn time this week, we engaged with gratitude in our work to give to others through our Canstruction event on Monday during which time we finalized a collection of 17,837 cans (an Assumption record) for Dare to Care, created Christmas cards for the elderly in long-term care facilities, and had the first opportunity to connect with family sister groups. And on Tuesday we celebrated our annual Thanksgiving prayer service. Next week, students will engage with each other as they celebrate family birthdays and through attendance at class meetings and homeroom time.
NEWS FROM THE ROCKET PARENT NETWORK (RPN): In pre-Covid times, RPN hosted an annual Mother/Daughter Bunco event in the fall of each year. While we were unable to host Mother/Daughter Bunco this year due to the proximity in which bunco players typically sit, we have a fun alternate event planned for this year. We are excited to invite all Assumption moms and daughters to join us this year for an ornament exchange. We hope that you can join us on Thursday, December 2, at 7:00 p.m. in the AHS cafeteria for a time to get together with other Assumption moms and students, enjoy some desserts, and get into the holiday spirit by exchanging ornaments with other AHS moms. This is a free event, and each family needs to bring only one ornament for the exchange. If you would like to attend this event, please take this very short two-question survey:
ASSUMPTION PARENT ORGANIZATION (APO) NEWS – ROCKET SPECTACULAR SPONSOR OPPORTUNITIES: We are excited for our 41st Annual Rocket Spectacular Benefit Dinner and Auction on Saturday, January 29, 2022. All proceeds benefit the financial needs of our students, and there are many ways you can support this effort! Donations Needed: We are currently collecting donations for our live and silent auctions. In the past, donors have asked if there are any specific items that were needed, or if they could purchase and donate. For this reason, and to simplify the process, we have created a “WISH LIST” on Amazon. Please know that all donations will be graciously accepted. https://bit.ly/AHSWishList22 Any questions, contact Tricia Ferree: tricia.ferree@ahsrockets.org
AHS IN FOCUS – Prospective Student Night: Seventh and eighth graders are invited to join us for AHS in Focus where future Rockets will attend two 25-minute special interest sessions followed by a Christmas-themed social for everyone to enjoy some AHS holiday fun. They may learn more about the interest sessions and register here. Please share with any prospective students you may know!
FAIR TRADE SHOPPING WEEK: The Environmental Concerns Committee is hosting a fair-trade shopping week at Just Creations, 2722 Frankfort Avenue, from December 13 to December 18. The ECC will receive 15% of any sales during that time if you mention at checkout that you are part of the Assumption High School community. Join the ECC as they support a store that not only protects the rights and dignity of workers but also strives for environmental sustainability!
