Jazmine Harry ’22 Attends Science and Technology Conferences & Participates in Internships
The learning did not stop this summer for junior Jazmine Harry. With a strong interest in technology and chemistry, Jazmine spent her summer attending various conferences as well as interning with Project SEED and the American Chemical Society. Project SEED is a highly sought after internship where students spend their summer working with scientists to learn more about careers in chemistry.
In addition to her internships, Jazmine participated in AI4ALL’s Coding webinars hosted by Emily Reid, where she explained the coding behind Facebook’s ad targeting and the implications that technologies like those could pose on lives. She spoke in AI4ALL’s Coding part 1 and 2 conference as well as Fireside Chat: Space science with Dr. Ayanna Howard, Roboticist & Professor at Georgia Tech.
Jazmine’s interest for Chemistry grew this summer after attending a webinar “STEM Excellence at the Forefront of Combating COVID-19,” where Dr. Kizzmekie Corbett, the immunologist leading the coronavirus vaccination, was the keynote speaker. Dr. Corbett spoke about her own experience interning with the American Chemical Society, which inspired Jazmine to apply for the internship herself.
Jazmine’s virtual internships and conferences don’t stop there. She also participated virtually in a project as part of her involvement in the Microsoft Council for Digital Good. “I engaged in user experience testing with some developers from the Microsoft M365 Consumer Team. As part of the focus group, I gave feedback on their products and features including digital tools and methods for parents to keep children and teenagers safe online while using their products.”
She shared that Assumption has really supported her in her computer science interests and her passion for science. This semester she will start Advanced Chemistry II and will eventually take computer science. Next summer, she will travel to Morocco with WiSci (Women in Science) where she will have hands-on experiences with their STEAM curriculum, cultural-exchange activities, and more. We are so proud of Jazmine for taking the initiative to expand her interests and participate in these conferences and internships over the summer. #ExcellenceEmpowers
