Dear Parents,

We have much to celebrate this week!  Today was AMAZING as our Assumption community took a “Walk to Save the World” for the annual Walk for Assumption.  We are especially proud to announce that we reached our AHS community-wide goal of 2,850 tickets and our school-wide stretch goal of 3,300 by selling 3,792 tickets AND raising $94,800 for financial assistance.  This is more than we have ever raised for the Rocket Raffle and the Walk for Assumption combined!  Thank you for encouraging your daughter to participate in our student fundraiser for financial aid!

With our record-breaking sales, we have earned two incentives this year.  Friday, March 27 (the Friday before Spring Break) is now an official day off of school, and our students get to wear Halloween costumes to school on Thursday, October 31.

Many thanks to all of our terrific APO moms and dads who helped with the student walk collection and t-shirt distribution. It was two busy successful weeks with collecting Rocket Raffle tickets and walk waivers. We could not have done it without each and every one of you!

Additionally, on Tuesday, we celebrated Mercy Day in union with the Sisters of Mercy across the world.  At our Mercy Day Celebration assembly, we recognized an incredible milestone – 150 years of service by the Sisters of Mercy in Louisville, Ky.  Sr. Paulanne Diebold, RSM and Sr. Diana Newton, RSM ‘65 were on hand as we honored the five Sisters of Mercy who live in Louisville for their commitment to the mercy charism. We also we honored three students and two faculty and staff who were selected by their peers as the 2019 Models of Mercy.  Recognized were Kelsey Shelby (sophomore), Shayla Long (junior), Chloe O’Bryan (senior), Jill Elder (faculty), and Kristin Walsh (staff). Congratulations to all of our award recipients!

CAMPUS MINISTRY:

  • PARENT PRAYER:  The Parent Prayer group meets each Tuesday morning from 8:15 – 8:45 a.m. in the chapel at St. Catherine’s Convent which is right across Tyler Lane from AHS.  Just look for the sign! If you are unable to attend but would like them to pray for a particular intention, please email it to our campus minister at maryann.steutermann@ahsrockets.org. We hope you find comfort in knowing that we are praying for your intention even if you can’t be present.
  • ALL SAINTS DAY MASS AND ALL SOULS REMEMBRANCE:  The Assumption community will celebrate All Saints Day on Friday, November 1, with a Mass at St. Raphael at 10:05 a.m.  We will be honoring the saints who have come before us as well as those in our own lives.  Because November 2 is All Souls Day, we are also inviting family members of AHS alumnae who have died in the past year to join us for Mass on Nov. 1.  Then on Nov. 4 during each homeroom period, we will have a special All Souls remembrance.  We will prayerfully recognize the names of family members of anyone in the AHS community who has died during the past year as well as the name of ALL Assumption alumnae who have passed on at any time.   We will ask students to share the names of any family members they may have lost this past year so they can be part of this special remembrance, and we invite you to do the same.  If you have lost a family member in the past year, please send this person’s full name to GAIL KING  by Friday, October 25.

PARENT/TEACHER/STUDENT CONFERENCES:  Conferences are scheduled for Tuesday, October 15, from 5:00-7:00 p.m. in order to give students and parents the opportunity to meet with teachers about students’ progress.  All parents are invited to attend, but parents of students with a D or F in in a class or classes as of October 15, the date of the conferences, are required to attend. Our next official grade update will be on Monday, October 1.  We recommend, however, that you check your daughter’s grades on PowerSchool between October 2 and October 15 to make plans to attend if needed.  No appointment is necessary.  If you have any questions that cannot be addressed at parent/teacher/student conferences, please contact your daughter’s dean – JUDY FIELDHOUSE (students whose last names begin with A-K) or THERESA SCHUHMANN  (students whose last names begin with L-Z)

TESTING DAY:  Wednesday, October 16, is the National Testing Day for all freshmen, sophomores, and juniors.  It is a late arrival Wednesday, with the tardy bell ringing at 9:05.  We will dismiss at approximately 12:30 p.m.  So as to not disturb any testing, we wait for all rooms to finish before we dismiss.  If your daughter is in our Learning Differences program and qualifies for extended time testing, please ask her what time she will finish.  All juniors will be taking the PSAT, sophomores will be taking the PreACT or PSAT (depending on her English class), and freshmen will be taking the PreACT test.  Please encourage your daughter to maximize the benefits of this day by getting a good night’s sleep, eating a healthy breakfast, and bringing her calculator and pencils with her on Testing Day.  There is no make-up day for these tests and no replacement for the valuable feedback they provide for both the school and your daughter, so attendance on this day is very important.

TESTING DAY FOR SENIORS: Since seniors are not involved in taking standardized tests on Testing Day, Wednesday, October 16, they are excused from coming to school on this day. We strongly encourage seniors to use this day for making college visits. Since Thursday and Friday of that week, and Monday of the following week, are Fall Break days, this is a great opportunity of make a visit to an out-of-town college.

POWERSCHOOL APP FOR GRADES & POWERSCHOOL LMS FOR ASSIGNMENTS:  An easy way to see your daughter’s grades is to use the mobile app. PowerSchool Mobile for Android version 2.0 is now available for download in the Google Play Store featuring a new, easier to use dashboard. The Apple Store has the PowerSchool mobile app, too. Our passcode for the app is BRSC.  The PowerSchool LMS allows you to see your daughter’s assignments and due dates. An invitation was sent a few weeks ago to each parent’s email with a URL to click and with your individual 8-digit code.

AHS TRIVIA NIGHT:  Trivia Night is back on Saturday, October 19, in the AHS gym.  Assemble a team of your most knowledgeable friends, challenge your rivals, and compete for gift cards, door prizes, and, of course, bragging rights!  Doors open at 5:30 p.m.  We will have snacks and drinks. The cost is $10 per person, but teams of six or more get one person free.  The maximum team size is eight.  Reserve a spot for your team or send any questions by email to LIZ BENDER.  All proceeds support the AHS Speech and Debate Team.  Thank you for helping us get the word out.  We look forward to seeing you there!

BLOODMOBILE:  On Thursday, October 3, and Friday, October 4, the National Honor Society will be hosting the Bloodmobile sponsored by the Red Cross from 8:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. at Assumption.  Students, parents, faculty, and staff are invited to give. Parents, please ask your daughter if she is signed up to give. If she is, please make sure that she eats a good dinner the night before and a good breakfast the morning prior to her donation. The Red Cross also recommends that donors drink a lot of water to stay hydrated both before and after donating.  We have some openings available and would like to invite parents to donate. If you would like to donate on behalf of Assumption on October 3 or 4, you may sign up via an online scheduling system through the Red Cross. You will need to sign up for an account if you have not done so before. Use this link SIGN UP HERE. If you have never given blood, this is a wonderful way that you can make a difference. Thank you in advance for considering!

SAFETY & SECURITY AUDIT:  The safety of your daughter is our highest priority, and to that end AHS is voluntarily working with the Kentucky Center for School Safety to audit the security and safety of our facilities.  This is being done as a preventative measure and not in response to any issues.  Representatives will be at Assumption on Wednesday, October 2, performing a site visit and also speaking to faculty, staff, and students.  We also will be notifying students that the audit will be taking place.  If you have any questions regarding the visit, please contact AHS President Mary Lang at mary.lang@ahsrockets.org.

CARPOOL LINE:  Parents, thank you so much for your help in making the carpool line move as smoothly as possible by pulling all the way up to the car in front of you before stopping. You may have noticed our ambassador encouraging your daughter to exit your vehicle as soon as it stops, and that really helps move the line along.  Also, please help your daughter be ready to exit the car as soon as you stop in the carpool line anywhere between the two crosswalks—the first one where an administrator with a stop sign helps the girls cross safely from the main parking lot and the second one near the entrance to the CAC where there is a student with a stop sign helping with the flow of people and vehicles.  Students may enter the building via the doors at the Arts and Sciences wing or the CAC. Thank you very much for your assistance!

REMINDER ABOUT DELIVERIES:  In an effort to teach our students about being accountable for their own belongings as well as to limit the number of visitors to school during the day and effectively monitor those visitors coming into the school, we have a policy that does NOT allow for student deliveries.  Parents – please do not bring items (lunches, homework, bake sale items, sports equipment, food for meetings, presentations, papers, etc.) to school to drop off for your daughters.  Our main office staff and athletic office staff have been instructed not to accept those deliveries. Thank you for your cooperation with these efforts

KHEAA DUAL CREDIT SCHOLARSHIP MUST BE COMPLETED BY OCTOBER 1:  Parents of students enrolled in a dual credit course:  Mrs. Fieldhouse visited all study hall blocks this week to remind students that the KHEAA site is now open for students to apply for the Dual Credit Scholarship to pay for up to TWO dual credit courses during her high school career.  This very simple set of instructions will guide you through: KHEAA DIRECTIONS    Please make sure this is completed by OCTOBER 1.  If your daughter is taking additional courses for which you will need to pay the college or university through her account at UL, WKU and/or JCTC.   For your information, here are the directions sent to us from KHEAA. Please contact JUDY FIELDHOUSE if you have any additional questions.
