Junior Family Council Representative, Ava McDowell
When you were deciding on a high school for your daughter, what stood out about Assumption? What ultimately led to your final decision? Most people go about high school selection to simply check a box. However, others, like yourselves, opt for a school that not only provides an excellent education, but also a foundational community. By enrolling her in Assumption High School, you made an investment in your daughter’s future. From the moment she entered these halls, she became a part of something much larger than herself. It’s difficult to put into words, but experiencing a first pep rally, forming a connection with a teacher, or making that first true friend feels truly magical. The small, everyday happenings of Rocket Life may seem easy to overlook, but I can promise you, everything we do and everything we are encouraged to do is intentional.
At Assumption, students are given opportunities to lead their peers, take on challenges, ask the hard questions, and do the work. We plan the events, create the memories, and shape the Assumption culture. The emotions and growth that can come from both the little things and the big things are all a part of the investment made by choosing Assumption. It is important for each student to slow down and appreciate moments like these.
I’ve always heard, “those four years fly by,” and I didn’t truly understand how fast they do until I was in them myself. Before I knew it, Assumption culture became my every day. The teacher whose name I was trying to remember grew familiar, and the route to a specific classroom became routine and full of friendly faces. Entering that “second half” can feel like a race to the end. Now, as I’m in that second half, I’m realizing how fleeting time can be. It is crucial to enjoy each moment as it comes, because these experiences are what ultimately shape who we become.
After the four years go by and I enter the “real-world,” I know there will not be many moments to slow down and have fun. As a student leader and member of Assumption’s Family Council, I have the opportunity to share the behind-the-scenes of a variety of special AHS traditions. Every event that we host, we create with intention and coat in Assumption’s culture. During my time here, I’ve chosen to take every chance I get to experience Assumption, whether that’s been showing up for my peers or taking on new roles. The immersive experiences Assumption provides for its girls are best appreciated when celebrated as a full community. I encourage you to consider the impact of your daughter’s presence at these school-wide events. She is important to me. She is important to all of us. Showing up and showing out for your fellow Rockets is a part of the commitment made with an investment in Assumption.
As we approach the many exciting school-wide events this spring, starting with Family Olympics next Friday, I encourage all Rockets to slow down and take advantage of these important parts of our culture. Perspective predicts outcome. The more she knows how special she is to the Community of Assumption, the more your daughter will reap the benefits of her high school experience. We can’t wait to do this together. Go Rockets!

MOTHER DAUGHTER BREAKFAST
This past weekend, the Class of 2026 took part in a cherished Assumption tradition as seniors at the Mother Daughter Breakfast. The morning was filled with laughter, shared memories, and meaningful moments celebrating the special bond between mothers and daughters. We extend our sincere thanks to the mothers in our Assumption community for the love, guidance, and support you provide. Your daughters are a true reflection of you.

FAMILY OLYMPICS: On Friday, March 20, all Assumption families will compete in Family Council-sponsored Olympics event from 12:50-3:00 p.m. Families, consisting of Assumption students and their homeroom teachers, will participate in a series of activities which will serve to strengthen family bonds and promote friendly, inter-family competition. Activities will include a family lunch, opening ceremony, four Olympic-style games, and finally, a closing competition in the gym at the end of the day. Families will dine together in their family suites picnic style by either organizing a family potluck OR bringing their own brown bag lunch. Please note:
- Students need to make sure that personal lunches brought from home include their own utensils and do not need to be microwaved.
- Students who forget their lunch can purchase a FLIK sack lunch for $7.00 (options: PB&J, tuna sandwich, veggie wrap, or garden salad with chips and a cookie)
Additionally, students are encouraged to wear their family t-shirt with spirit wear bottoms OR a full outfit in their family color. Family color accessories are permitted and encouraged to add to the spirit of the day. May the best family win!
LEAD & LEARN DAY – Wednesday, March 25: While our faculty and staff will be participating in a professional development day, our students will utilize this day from home as a LEAD & Learn Day. As they were in October, students will be asked to identify how they can most productively utilize the day to achieve academic and co-curricular outcomes for the semester and may choose to engage in a variety of activities to accomplish these goals. These could include catching up on homework or working ahead on a project, writing college essays or completing college applications, making a college visit, completing service hours, or engaging in standardized test prep. This could also include some time for rest, mindfulness, or exercise. As a final step in solidifying their purposeful use of the day, students will be required to submit their plans for the day by 12:00 p.m. via email through an Attendance Forms Survey. This survey will serve as their virtual attendance for the day.

LENTEN OPPORTUNITIES:
- Throughout Lent, we continue the Rice Bowl collection to support the important work of Catholic Relief Services, which meets the needs of people most in need around the world and here at home in Louisville. We ask that she print the selections and bring them to school to obtain teacher signatures and turn in the parent signed course selections no later than Friday, March 20. We have extended this deadline due to our Friday digital learning day. PLEASE NOTE: You are not able to use the PowerSchool app to access the registration link. It must be at https://ahsvps1.ahsrockets.org/public/
FOOD SERVICE SURVEY – Flik wants your feedback! Flik invites you to share your feedback regarding your daughter’s dining experience in order to assist them in maintaining high standards of quality, service, and overall satisfaction. Click here to take the brief survey: AHS Survey Link. The survey closes on Friday, March 20.
TUITION ASSISTANCE AND SCHOLARSHIP LETTERS: Tuition assistance and scholarship letters were emailed to families on March 6 using the email address listed in FACTS. Scholarships are awarded on an annual basis and are determined through a thoughtful and thorough review process. Each year, the scholarship committee carefully considers a large number of applications in order to distribute available funds in a way that best supports our school community. With more than 1,000 applications submitted this year, the selection process is highly competitive and requires many difficult decisions. If your daughter did not receive a scholarship for the upcoming year, she will have the opportunity to apply again for the 2027–2028 school year. We encourage families to continue to apply for aid, as circumstances and available funding may change from year to year. Please note: if your daughter’s account is delinquent, an award letter cannot be issued until the account is current. If you have any questions regarding your financial aid award, please contact our Executive Director of Finance, Jessica Thompson, at jessica.thompson@ahsrockets.org or 271-2529.
ABSENCES BEFORE/AFTER SPRING BREAK: Please note that absences directly before or after Spring Break will count toward semester absence totals. Also, missing the day before or after Spring Break without a medical note will result in an academic penalty of a 50% reduction on assignments missed. If your daughter is sick before or after Spring Break, please submit a medical note to the Attendance Office so that this can be noted on your daughter’s attendance record. Full details about our attendance policies and procedures can be found in the Student-Family Handbook.

LETTERS FROM COLLEGES: Attention, senior parents! Please have your senior daughters submit ALL letters received from colleges regarding admissions decisions, scholarship offers, and admission to special programs and honors colleges to the Guidance Office. The majority of colleges DO NOT provide this information directly to high schools, so your daughter is often our only source of information about this. Her timely sharing of this information is vital to the Senior Honors Celebration as we work to make sure we have all the correct information to celebrate your daughter and the Class of 2026. These letters can be hard copies, faxes, or scanned copies and can be emailed directly to COLLEGE.LETTERS@ahsrockets.org. We ask that students submit all of this information by Monday, March 23, 2026.
DRESS CODE FOR SENIOR PROM: Seniors will receive information about their senior prom at an upcoming class meeting and via email. Senior prom will be held Friday, May 8, at the Mellwood Art Center from 6-11 p.m. Unlike other Assumption dances, the senior prom is a formal dance, and our Dean of Students, Kamaria Wesley, will review information about our dress code for a formal dance with the seniors; she will also email information about the dress code for the dance to all the seniors. Ms. Wesley recommends that students ask parents for advice in following the dress code guidelines to make sure they are dressed appropriately for a Catholic high school dance. We are counting on you to help your daughter evaluate some of the current fashion trends. As the dance gets closer, we will share information about our usual dance policies and expectations along with other specific information about senior prom in class meetings and with reminder emails and announcements.

ACT FOR JUNIORS: On Tuesday, March 24, all juniors will take the ACT at Assumption at 8:50 a.m. Juniors will be dismissed at approximately 12:15 on this day. Just like in October, there is no makeup date for this ACT at AHS, no signup is needed on the part of each family, and this test fee is covered by your tuition dollars. You can read more about ACT school day testing at this link. This score can be sent to colleges and universities and used for admission and scholarship purposes. Please contact COLLEEN MURPHY if you have any questions.
JUNIOR PROM: The Junior Prom will be held on Saturday, March 28 from 8:00-11:00 p.m. in the Assumption gym. The junior class moderators and class officers have been hard at work in the process of planning the details for the big semiformal event, and many juniors have already started shopping for the dance. With this in mind, our Dean of Students, Kamaria Wesley, will share a video with all juniors to review information about our dress code for dances with the students and students may email with questions. Please take a few minutes to review the dress code with your daughter so you can help her know what is expected as she is deciding what to wear to the event. As you will see in the information, Ms. Wesley recommends that they ask parents for advice in following the guidelines to make sure they are dressed appropriately for a Catholic high school dance. We are counting on you to help your daughter evaluate some of the current fashion trends. As the dance gets closer, we will share information about our usual dance policies and expectations along ticket details in a class meeting and with reminder emails and announcements.

CURRENT FRESHMAN REGISTRATION PARENT NIGHT: Thanks to those parents in the Class of 2028 who joined us for this information night on Thursday. During the event, Dean of Studies Theresa Schuhmann reviewed the information sessions covering the registration process that have been and will be shared with the freshmen. The first is designed to introduce students to the language of the registration process so that they can be active and informed participants in the process. The second covers the logistical details of the process including due dates and deadlines. If you were unable to attend, the PowerPoint that was used as part of this presentation is linked here.
