November 15, 2024
Yesterday we took time to host a victory assembly with our entire school community – but this was no ordinary victory assembly. It was an opportunity to recognize and celebrate the many great things happening these past few weeks here of Assumption.
As you may have heard, AHS won not one, not two, but THREE state championships these past three weeks – in field hockey, cross country, and volleyball. Not since 2012 have we been able to pull off such a feat. Amid those celebrations, the Rose Theatre Company wrapped up a highly successful two-week run of sold-out performances of their incredible production of Jesus Christ Superstar! Morning announcements were a little longer than usual recently as we celebrated the prowess of our Quick Recall, academic, and speech teams. We also recognized 18 seniors at their athletic signing committing to play at the next level.
In addition, two members of our counseling department received some very special recognition. Our very own Ms. Jennifer Ruckriegel was named Kentucky School Counselor of the Year and Penny Peetz, our therapy dog, travelled to New York City and represented AHS on the Today Show as an American Humane Society Hero Dog of the Year finalist.
And to cap it all off, we welcomed over 600 families to our Open House on Saturday!
While our victory assembly gave us the chance to savor the many recent achievements and accomplishments of our school, we know that at its center is our amazing Assumption community. A community that brings joy and makes magic happen every day!
ROSE THEATRE ROCKET NIGHT
Thursday evening, we had an absolutely star-studded Rose Theatre Rocket Night! We were so glad to welcome young actors into Assumption’s theatre, green room, and onto our stage. Participants got to go backstage and get hands-on by brainstorming a cosmetics plan with some of the crew, learn choreography and vocals from a fun number, and perform for their parents and families. The young actors even got posters and programs from our show: Jesus Christ Superstar! that they got autographed by various cast and crew.
FRESHMAN-SOPHOMORE SEMIFORMAL DANCE: On Saturday, November 16, the sophomore class officers are hosting the Freshman-Sophomore Semiformal Dance from 8:00-11:00 p.m. Every student and her guest must have a ticket that was purchased in advance. Each student must also present her student ID when entering. Tickets will not be sold at the door. Students have received information about dance rules and expectations via SharePoint, email, and morning announcements. In order to ensure student safety, all students and guests must arrive by 9:00 p.m. and may not leave until 10:30 p.m. All students will be monitored with the use of a passive alcohol sensor upon arrival and departure of the dance.
CAREER DAY: Assumption students will be participating in our annual Career Day on Monday. November 18. This event will take place during our student RTI time. Students in all grade levels will engage in activities to help them think about careers and college. Freshmen will use a skill inventory to explore careers that match their interests and hear from an alumna from Bellarmine University’s Career Development Center about how the habits they develop in high school and their academic progress have an impact on their future career pursuits. Sophomores and juniors will have the opportunity to visit with more than 70 alumnae and learn information from over 40 career fields, including engineering, finance, aviation engineering, government law and services, and many more from alumnae who specialize in those fields. Seniors will have the opportunity to hear from recent Assumption alumnae about preparations for college and beyond. They will have a chance to ask questions, hear perspectives, and gain insight from young women who once sat in their seats at Assumption.
THANKSGIVING HOLIDAYS: Thanksgiving is only two weeks away! Please note: Assumption will close for Thanksgiving break from Wednesday, November 27 – Friday, November 29.
ASSUMPTION PARENT PRAYER: Our parent prayer group will meet on Tuesday, November 19 from 8:15-8:45 a.m. in the AHS chapel. Please park in any open space and enter the school through the main entrance. We will be praying for the Galway family freshmen and sophomores. Please join us for any or all of these opportunities.
PRAYER INTENTIONS: All Assumption parents and alumnae are invited to share prayer intentions. Periodically, we will include the line of “prayer intentions posted online by AHS parents and alumnae” as part of our morning prayer over the P.A. Likewise, feel free to include the intentions you find there in your own personal prayer. To participate, please follow this link.
RTI OPPORTUNITIES: This week during RTI Time, students could elect to participate in our Encounter faith-sharing group, make rosaries that will be sent overseas to missions, pray the rosary, participate in a Liturgy of the Word, make ornaments as a service project, and attend various Leadership Education Opportunities. An array of different opportunities is available each week.
We are excited to share student leadership opportunities with members of the Class of 2028 on Friday, November 22 during class meetings. Since the beginning of the school year, our freshman homerooms have bonded under the leadership of nine phenomenal Freshman Mentors. These junior students have worked with each homeroom to help them connect with one another, learn about the Assumption Community, and transition to this exciting high school environment. They’ve developed opportunities for the class of 2028 to come together in celebration, fun, prayer, and bonding. This important role transitions to rising freshman leaders at the start of second semester as they elect leaders out of their current homerooms. Students will hear about opportunities to serve as Family Council representatives or Class Officers. If students are interested in running, they will need to attend interest meetings the following week during RTI time. If there are any questions about the election of student leaders for these positions, please reach out to Kristin Walsh, Director of Leadership & Engagement Kristin.walsh@ahsrockets.org
ALERT SYSTEM TEST: We sent a test weather and emergency alert on Thursday, November 14 at 5:05 p.m. All parents who set their options in PowerSchool were sent a test message to their email and/or phone via text or voice. If you did not receive the message as expected, please check your options by logging into PowerSchool and following these instructions, or email Brent Miller in our IT Department or call his office at 502-271-2527 for assistance.
2023-24 YEARBOOK DISTRIBUTION: Yearbooks have arrived and will be distributed November 19-21 in the atrium. Students will have a chance to pick up their books during their lunches on the following days: seniors – November 19, juniors – November 20, and sophomores – November 21. Students cannot pick up books for friends or students who are absent; everyone must pick up her own book. Students who are absent on their pickup day may pick up their book from the Media Center beginning Friday, November 22.
CANSTRUCTION: Canstruction is beginning! Canstruction is one of the biggest service events in our Assumption community. This event provides the opportunity to donate to Dare to Care by bringing in canned goods for those facing food insecurity in our Louisville community. An Assumption tradition since 2006, Canstruction not only provides food for the community at large but also provides a unique opportunity for Assumption family bonding. Each family collects cans in their homerooms throughout the rest of the month of November in order to come together to Can-struct a visual made of those cans during our Canstruction event. Canstruction will be held on Monday, December 9, so that will be the last collection day, but we will collect cans each day until then. We are looking forward to having the Assumption community help the Louisville community through our partnership with Dare to Care!
FINANCIAL AID FORM: The financial aid link for the 2025-2026 school year has been added to the school’s website. The due date is January 31, 2025, and the form must be submitted online to FACTS Grant and Aid Assessment. FINANCIAL AID APPLICATION LINK. As a reminder, you are required to file every year to be considered for assistance.
YOUTH RISK BEHAVIOR SURVEY: Assumption is taking part in the Youth Risk Behavior Survey. Students will take this survey during homeroom time starting in December. This survey is sponsored by the CDC. The Youth Risk Behavior Survey will ask about the health behaviors of ninth- through twelfth-grade students and include questions about nutrition, physical activity, injuries, tobacco, alcohol, and other drug use. The survey will also ask about sexual behaviors. Students will be asked to fill out a survey online, which will take about 15-20 minutes during their designated homeroom time. All responses to this survey are 100% anonymous, and the survey has been designed to protect your child’s privacy. Students will not put their names anywhere on the survey. The results of our survey are used exclusively for in-house programming and aggregate data useful in planning curriculum to meet the needs of our current students. No action will be taken if your child does not take the survey. Students may skip any questions they do not wish to answer. In addition, students may stop taking the survey at any point. If you would like to see the survey, a copy is available at the following CDC link:
2024 Youth Risk Behavior Survey. If you have any questions about the Youth Risk Behavior Survey, please feel free to contact your daughter’s counselor for further information.
AP EXAMS: If your daughter is taking an AP course this year, she has been busy signing up for AP college exams and AP portfolio submissions. These AP courses will be administered the first few weeks of May at Assumption High School. AP exam and AP portfolio submission invoices will be sent to parents via email from Blackbaud Tuition Management in January. If you paid your tuition in full in July, please also be on the lookout for this email as you will need to make this payment. Please take a moment to talk with your daughter about the exams she is registered to take. Exams and art portfolio submissions are $99 each except for AP Research and AP Seminar which are $147 each. For more information about AP exams and CollegeBoard, visit https://parents.collegeboard.org/college-board-programs/advanced-placement-program. Please contact Judy.Fieldhouse@ahsrockets.org or Kathy.Fleischer@ahsrockets.org if you have any questions.
SOME REMINDERS ABOUT ABSENCES: Assumption no longer distinguishes between excused and unexcused absences. A student is considered absent from her class if she is not present for the class. Please keep this in mind as you are making holiday plans for Thanksgiving and Christmas. Students are required to provide a doctor’s note for an absence just before or after an extended break from school. Without a doctor’s note, the absence will automatically count towards your daughter’s semester attendance. Please remember that all attendance-related information should be communicated by emailing attendance@ahsrockets.org or by calling the school. Full details about our attendance and absence policies and procedures can be found in the STUDENT-PARENT HANDBOOK.
GOING HOME SICK: On a related note, if your daughter contacts you during the day telling you that she is sick and needs to come home, please do not just come to school to pick her up; instead, please call the attendance office at 271-2507 and make our school nurse, Mrs. Miranda, aware of the situation. She will find your daughter, assess the situation from a medical perspective, and then give you an update and let you know if you should come to take your daughter home, make arrangements for her to be seen by a doctor, etc.
GOVERNOR’S SCHOOL FOR THE ARTS: Applications for GSA area available now! This program is open to sophomore and junior students interested in the performing, visual, and creative arts. The application deadline is Sunday, January 12, 2025, and information can be found HERE. Interested students should watch the informational video found at the link above and contact their guidance counselor for additional information.
DUAL CREDIT TUITION DUE TO WKU, JCTC, AND UL: Students enrolled in a dual credit class this semester need to make sure they pay any tuition owed by the beginning of December. Students should log into their accounts on www.KHEAA.com to double check which colleges they chose for disbursement for the Dual Credit Scholarship and then need to log into their JCTC, WKU, and/or UL account to pay any remaining tuition due for this semester. This includes all first semester and yearlong DC courses except for Precalculus and Calculus, which will register for credit in November. If you need help knowing which course is associated with which university, consult this sheet from our website: DUAL CREDIT INFORMATION 2024-2025. If you have any questions, contact JUDY FIELDHOUSE.

For families that plan to complete the 2025-2026 Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), it is scheduled to be available on December 1. Please wait 2-3 weeks before completing it to ensure the system is running smoothly. In the meantime, students and parents should create an account that will eventually be used to log in as well as to sign the FAFSA. Students and parents are encouraged to create this account (previously called an FSA ID) at least two to three weeks prior to completing the FAFSA. To create an account, the individual will need his/her Social Security number and a mobile phone number and/or email address. Students should not use their Assumption email for this process.
The tools below can be used to assist students and parents with the account creation and FAFSA processes.

CLASS OF 2025 INFORMATION CONFIRMATION MAILING: Parents of the Class of 2025: This week, a hard copy memo was sent to your daughter via homeroom. It contained a form asking for confirmation of the spelling/accuracy of your daughter’s name for official graduation documents and programs. It is due in the school office by Thursday, December 4. Even if no changes need to be made, please make sure to return a signed copy to the main office by Thursday, December 4.
SENIOR YEARBOOK TRIBUTES: Over the years, senior parents have developed a tradition of supporting certain activities important to their graduating daughters at Assumption. One of these is helping to underwrite the cost of printing the yearbook by purchasing “Senior Tributes” that contain a message of congratulations and your favorite photos of your graduate. “Senior Tributes” can be a great way to document and celebrate your daughter’s time as an Assumption Rocket. If you are interested in purchasing a “Senior Tribute,” you will find size, pricing information, instructions, and a contract here: 2025 Senior Ad Letter and Contract. The deadline to submit tribute contracts is Tuesday, November 26. Please feel free to reach out to Melissa Fette, yearbook adviser, at melissa.fette@ahsrockets.org with any questions. Thank you for your support of the Assumption Rosecast!
GRADUATION INFORMATION – GRADUATION ANNOUNCEMENTS: Information regarding graduation announcements and other 2025 graduation items from Jostens was shared with the seniors on Monday, November 4.
