January 27, 2023
Since our school’s inception nearly 70 years ago, Assumption has always been known for being a warm, caring, and welcoming place. We pride ourselves on extending our arms wide and accepting girls from all walks of life, no matter who she is or where she comes from.
That said, we know that the cost of an Assumption education can be daunting for many families. That’s why we have committed ourselves to growing our financial support so more young women can attend Assumption. I often tell prospective families that we never want money to stand in the way of their daughter receiving a life-changing Assumption education. Expanding the number of scholarships and increasing financial aid continues to be a top strategic priority for AHS.
This year, we made changes to our scholarship and financial aid processes to provide parents with award information sooner. Previously, tuition assistance awards were sent in May, but this year parents will be notified of their daughter’s scholarship and financial aid awards in the beginning of March – a full two months earlier.
Please note that the deadline for applying for Financial Aid is fast approaching. If you haven’t already, please submit your financial aid application to FACTS by Tuesday, January 31 via this link here.
In addition to the above, and as part of our continuing efforts to promote diversity in our school community, we are announcing The Mother Frances Warde Scholarship. Frances Warde was one of the founding Sisters of Mercy who left her homeland of Ireland and against overwhelming odds came to the United States to establish a total of 82 Mercy schools, convents, and other ministries.
To qualify for the Mother Frances Warde Scholarship, a student must have demonstrated financial need as determined by FACTS, and be Asian, African American, Multi-racial, Pacific Islander, Indigenous, or Hispanic. Applications are due by Wednesday, February 8 and may be submitted using the link here.
Please don’t hesitate to reach out to me at mary.lang@ahsrockets.org regarding the above. We are happy to answer questions or assist you with this process and we look forward to continuing to serve you and your daughter for the 2023-24 school year.
Today we welcomed six Argentine exchange students all the way from Colegio Santa Ethnea, a Mercy school in Bella Vista, Buenos Aires, Argentina. They will be spending the next four weeks with their host families and Assumption sisters experiencing our culture and Mercy hospitality. Bienvenidas Clemen, Flor, Isa, Onu, Pili, and Viky!
CATHOLIC SCHOOLS WEEK: Next week we will be celebrating National Catholic Schools Week. This week provides an opportunity for us to appreciate how much Catholic schools have been and continue to be an important part of our lives. Each morning, we will have a special prayer that focuses on five aspects of our Catholic experience: community, ritual, sacraments, social teaching, and tradition. On Tuesday, January 31, student representatives will attend the Archdiocesan Mass celebrating Catholic Schools. Additionally, we will take time to celebrate special people in our community each day. On Thursday, February 2, we will be celebrating our amazing students. All students can wear spirit wear on Thursday and enjoy a special treat at lunch!
12:30 DISMISSAL NEXT FRIDAY: We will dismiss at 12:30 p.m. on Friday, February 3, to allow for the set-up of Rocket Spectacular. After-school supervision will not be provided, so please make arrangements for your daughter to be picked up by 12:45 p.m.
SPECIAL PARENT PRAYER DURING CATHOLIC SCHOOLS WEEK – JANUARY 31: Instead of the usual Parent Prayer at AHS on Tuesday, January 31, all Catholic high school parents in the archdiocese are invited to a special Catholic Schools Week Parent Prayer Service at Mercy Academy. The service begins at 8:30 a.m. Come early to mingle! Coffee and donuts to be served afterwards. Mercy is located at 5801 Fegenbush Lane. Please enter through the main entrance by the circle drive.
During LEAD & Learn time last week, students reviewed safety drills including an earthquake drill, fire drill, tornado drill, and intruder drill.
Next week, students will hear about our Little Library and 40 Books initiatives during homeroom on Monday. On Tuesday, all students will attend a brief assembly about a special week we have coming up in which students will have an opportunity to get assistance in their classes and engage in a variety of enrichment activities which is called RTI Week (Response to Intervention). On Thursday, students will be in homeroom to set goals for how they will use the upcoming special RTI Week. We will not have LEAD Learn time on Friday due to our early dismissal.
LEAD & LEARN RTI WEEK: We are excited to host our first LEAD & Learn RTI Week during the week of February 6- 10. This week will accomplish the same goal of our LEAD & Learn Wednesdays that we implemented first semester but will occur during LEAD & Learn time each day. We are excited to pilot this week as part of our commitment as a Professional Learning Community (PLC) school as we work to provide in-time assistance to students (RTI – Response to Intervention) to ensure that they are learning the essential standards taught by their teachers. Next week, students will attend a special assembly to learn the expectations for the week and to begin to plan their time. As we did for our LEAD & Learn Wednesdays, students invited specifically to attend an academic help session will be notified by their teachers next week via email, and a parent/guardian will be copied on the email.
FINANCIAL AID FORM: The financial aid link for the 2023-2024 school year has been added to the school’s website. Students are invited to come to the Media Center from 7:45 to 9:00 a.m. to receive extra support in their classes from peer tutors, study groups, or the AC teachers. To ensure we are meeting everyone’s needs, we ask students to please RSVP in advance to Mrs. Conway or Ms. Prentice.
REGISTRATION FOR THE 2023-2024 SCHOOL YEAR: Even as we continue to work to make this the best possible semester for your daughter, we are also looking toward planning for the success of our returning students next school year. Part of that planning process is registering for class for the 2023-2024 school year. Registration for current students for next school year will take place in March this year. More details will be shared as the time for registration approaches.

SPRING DUAL CREDIT CLASSES: If you daughter is enrolled in a Spring 2023 dual credit class, she will be filling out an application this week or completed it last week and will need to have a parent signature on at least one form. If your daughter is taking DC PreCalculus, DC Calculus, DC Public Speaking, DC English IV, DC Intro to Business, DC Personal Finance, DC World Religions, or DC Foundations of Instructions, please talk to your daughter about any parent forms that need to be completed and if she still has remaining KHEAA scholarships to pay for these courses or if you will need to pay the tuition for the course. HIRING FOR FACILTY/MAINTENANCE TEAM AND CUSTODIAL TEAM: Parents do you know of someone who would be a good fit for Assumption? We are hiring for our Facility/Maintenance and Custodial Teams. Full-time and part-time positions are available. Good starting pay and benefits along with a great work environment. In addition, employees receive a 50% discount off their daughter’s tuition. Please email Michael Clark, Facility Director, at Michael.Clark@ahsrockets.org for more information.
SENIOR ASSEMBLY: On Friday, February 3, seniors will participate in an assembly centered around the award-winning documentary, The Hunting Ground. Current statistics indicate that one in five women will be sexually assaulted in college. The documentary features the stories of several victims of campus sexual assault and shows the emotional aftermath on the victims and their individual journeys for justice. At the assembly, seniors will view the documentary and hear from guest speakers about campus resources, consent, and bystander empowerment. We hope that this program will spark a discussion at home about the prevalence of sexual assaults on college campuses. If you would like to view the documentary with your daughter to foster a follow-up discussion at home, the documentary is available for purchase or rent on Amazon.com: Amazon Link. If you have any questions about this documentary or the assembly planned for seniors, please contact Jennifer Ruckriegel via email at jennifer.ruckriegel@ahsrockets.org.
