MARCH 25, 2022

Guidance Program Director & Guidance Counselor for the Class of 2022
Assumption hosts an annual prevention assembly designed to encourage students to make good choices regarding alcohol and drugs. In recent years we have addressed mental health needs and finding healthy alternatives to managing stress, the vaping epidemic, prescription pill use/abuse, and the dangers of alcohol consumption.
This year we had the opportunity to partner with the Louisville Metro Police Department to put on a drunk driving crash simulation in our AHS parking lot. Today, in collaboration with Sgt. Browning of the LMPD, we used student and staff “actors” to simulate a scene that might be the result of drinking and driving. This simulation was complete with a coroner, the jaws of life, firefighters, paramedics, a field sobriety test, an arrest for drunk driving, and a distraught parent arriving at the scene. Following the outdoor crash simulation, students moved to the gym to hear from a guest speaker who lost her daughter to an alcohol-related vehicle accident. She works closely with the LMPD to help prevent future fatalities.
This is the third time we have hosted an event such as this and have found it to be a powerful way to show our student body the very real consequences of the choice to drive under the influence. We hope it spurs continued conversation and allows you the opportunity to engage in important discussions with your daughter about the impact of decisions surrounding drug and alcohol use.

To keep our families informed of the impact of COVID on our school, we continue reporting our positive COVID cases each week via the Rocket Report.
- This week, (reporting from Friday 3/18/22 to Thursday 3/24/22); AHS had 1 new positive COVID case – which was a student.
- Since the start of this semester, AHS has had 205 positive COVID cases. 181 were students and 24 were faculty/staff.
Mask Mandate: Based on our current Covid numbers and declining cases in the greater community, AHS will remain mask optional until further notice including on buses and vans.

We want to thank Sergeant Craig Browning, the Louisville Metro Police, Fire, and Emergency Medical Departments for their work to provide today’s assembly highlighting the impact of impaired driving. We also thank Theresa Martinez for sharing her family’s story of loss as a result of a drunk driver and encouraging our students to make wise decisions. Today would not have been possible without our student and faculty volunteers, senior Meg Ralston, junior Macy Stone, and faculty member Pam Conway.

SENIORS – MOTHER/DAUGHTER BREAKFAST: Just a reminder to our seniors and their mothers or mother figures in their lives – the Mother/Daughter Breakfast is tomorrow, Saturday, March 26, at the Crowne Plaza Hotel (830 Phillips Lane by the airport) from 9:30-11:30 a.m. Optional pictures will be available beginning at 8:00 a.m. Please note that it’s best to arrive early for photos so that you don’t have to wait until after the breakfast to get yours. After the event, you can go online to order photos at https://shop.studioillumination.com/. Photo packages range from $25 to $32.
SPRING BREAK: Spring break will begin Friday, April 1, since we met our Rocket Raffle ticket sale incentive, and continue through Sunday, April 10. School will resume on Monday, April 11.

PARENT PRAYER Our parent prayer group continues to meet each Tuesday morning from 8:30-9:00 a.m. in our new chapel. This group is more than just prayer; it’s community. It’s a chance for parents to pray for their daughters and their daughters’ friends and time to get to know more Assumption parents. Please park in any open space and enter the school through the main entrance. Please join us for any or all of these opportunities!

This week during LEAD & Learn Time, as part of our continued efforts to engage our families across grade levels, students participated in a family sister activity on Monday. On Tuesday and Thursday, classes alternated between homeroom and class meetings. During homeroom, they engaged in activities sponsored by our Science National Honor Society and in class meeting joined in a kickoff of our bleacher dances which will be showcased at the spring sports pep rally. And on Friday, the school community participated in an important direction activity sponsored by our counseling office in partnership with the Louisville Metro Police Department focused on preventing students driving under the influence.
Next week during LEAD & Learn Time, all students will be in homeroom on Monday to participate in a follow-up discussion from Friday’s prevention assembly directed by our peer leaders and homeroom teachers. On Tuesday and Thursday, classes will engage in a variety of activities in homeroom and class meetings. Freshman, sophomores, and juniors will receive information about elected class and Family Council leadership positions for the 2022-2023 school year. Sophomores will reflect upon their ACTS experience at their class closing prayer service. Seniors will have the opportunity to engage in a class picture on Tuesday. And all classes will spend the week receiving direction from our Green Dot Program club members on engaging in healthy and supportive relationships.

REMINDER – ABSENCES BEFORE/AFTER SPRING BREAK: Please note that Assumption does not grant excused absences for college days on days immediately before or after spring break. We also cannot excuse students from school for family trips and/or vacations. If you are planning to take your daughter out of school for the whole day or before 3:00 p.m. on Thursday, March 31, whether to incorporate a college visit into or to get a jump start on Spring Break travel, please bear in mind that the absence will be unexcused and she will not be able to receive full credit for anything collected for a grade (including tests) in her classes while she is gone; makeup work that is completed and turned in will receive 50% of the grade earned. If your daughter becomes ill and is unable to attend school on Thursday, March 31, or Monday, April 11, she will need to provide a doctor’s note or have authorization from our school nurse for the absence to be excused. If you have any questions or concerns about this, please contact Dean of Students CINDI BAUGHMAN. Full details about our attendance and absence policies and procedures can be found in the STUDENT-PARENT HANDBOOK.
SCHOOL CULTURE SURVEY – Parent Input Needed: This past Monday parents were sent a Special Message asking them to complete the Johns Hopkins School Culture 360 Survey. This anonymous survey is open from March 21 to April 8 with separate survey instruments for administrators, teachers, students, and parents. Your input is critical and we want to hear from you! AHS’s goal is to reach 70% parent participation. To encourage our parents to take the survey, your daughters will have a free spirit wear day on April 28 – the day of the Pink and White Game if we reach our 70% goal. Previously, we had selected March 31 as the incentive date for spirit wear but since Johns Hopkins changed the closing date of the survey, AHS had to move back the date for the potential dress down day. Please take a few minutes to complete the survey and help AHS reach our goal!
ROCKET PARENT NETWORK (RPN) NEWS: Assumption’s Rocket Parent Network invites you to come for a speaker meeting with Sgt. Craig Browning of LMPD. Sgt. AHS SUMMER CAMPS: We are excited to announce that our 2022 summer camp schedule is now open! This year, Assumption is offering over 40 fun-filled enrichment and athletic sessions (including 10 co-ed opportunities) to all K-9 students. ALUMNAE UNITE: The AHS Advancement Office is excited to announce the Alumnae Unite Campaign taking place March 23-25! Alumnae Unite is a giving campaign between the female graduates of Assumption, Bethlehem, Holy Cross, Mercy, Presentation, and Sacred Heart. The purpose is to raise funds for each school’s Annual Fund, which provides vital funding for student programs, activities, and tuition assistance. This year, we are All for 22 with each school trying to reach 22% alumnae giving participation. AHS is currently at 5.5% and needs 1,600 more alum donations to reach our goal. As an alumna, or parent of an alumna, we invite you or your daughter to support current and future students by making a donation during this campaign. For more information, click here or contact Abby Martin.
AFTERNOON CROSSING GUARD: The Louisville Police Department is actively seeking a traffic guard for AHS and St. Raphael in the afternoon at Bardstown Road and Lancashire. Please share this job posting with anyone who may be qualified or interested in being trained for this position: TRAFFIC GUARD JOB DESCRIPTION

LETTERS FROM COLLEGES: Attention, senior parents! Please have your senior daughters submit ALL letters received from colleges regarding admissions decisions, scholarship offers, and admission to special programs and honors colleges to the Guidance Office. The majority of colleges DO NOT provide this information directly to high schools, so your daughter is often our only source of information about this. Her timely sharing of this information is vital to the Senior Honors Celebration as we work to make sure we have all the correct information to celebrate your daughter and the Class of 2022. These letters can be hard copies, faxes, or scanned copies and can be emailed directly to COLLEGE.LETTERS@ahsrockets.org. We ask that students submit all of this information by Thursday, March 31.
