MARCH 18, 2022

Director of Mission Effectiveness, Mary Ann Steutermann
Compassion truly inspires at Assumption this season! When she was a senior, Emma Bartley ’19, dreamed of a way for the Community of Assumption to have positive impact on the larger Louisville community through our Family Program. That dream became what we now know of as Compassion Connections. Through this initiative, each of our nine AHS families will be collecting needed items to support nine different nonprofit agencies from March 21-25. Your daughter has been asked to bring in a specific item as her donation in homeroom. We’d love for you to consider donating as well. Just ask your daughter what items her homeroom is collecting and send in any you want to contribute with her during the week of March 21. TONS of family points will be awarded to students based on participation. The goal is for each homeroom to have 100% of the students donate something, no matter how small. It’s not the amount that counts; it’s joining together as a family to help those in need. We are all different in how much we can give, and that’s perfectly fine! Also, students will be delivering these items to agencies sometime in April. If you can help transport items, please tell your daughter to share this information in her homeroom. Thanks for helping us help so many others!

To keep our families informed of the impact of COVID on our school, we continue reporting our positive COVID cases each week via the Rocket Report.
- This week, (reporting from Thursday 3/11/22 to Thursday 3/17/22); AHS had 3 new positive COVID cases – all students.
- Since the start of this semester, AHS has had 204 positive COVID cases. 180 were students and 24 were faculty/staff.
Mask Mandate: Based on our current Covid numbers and declining cases in the greater community, AHS will remain mask optional until further notice including on buses and vans.

The Achievement Center (AC) at Assumption is available to every student at all grade levels to provide both long-term and “just in time” support in all content areas. The AC also aides in skill development including time management, organizational and study skills, and research and test-taking skills.
Staffed by two full-time teachers, Pam Conway and Aricka Prentice, the AC located in the Media Center, is open to students before, during, and after school to accommodate busy schedules and individual academic needs. Here are just a few things your daughter will come to know and love in the AC:
- One-to-One Assistance: Students may utilize the Achievement Center during their study hall blocks to work with Mrs. Conway and/or Ms. Prentice for short-term assistance with content or for development of learning strategies and skills that are key to their success. Students are often referred to the AC by their counselors, teachers, academic deans, or parents, but students also may self-refer as needed.
- Peer Tutors: The Achievement Center works to pair peer tutors for additional academic support. These peer tutors are students who excel in particular classes/content areas. Tutors are paired based on similar learning styles and also assist with study and organizational skills.
- Study Groups: Throughout the academic year, especially during midterms and finals, the AC hosts a variety of study groups before and after school to support students as they prepare for tests and exams. Study groups for Advanced Placement (AP) courses are also established prior to AP exams to prepare for the college-level assessments.
- Work It Wednesdays: On Wednesdays, Assumption has a late opening and begins the school day an hour later. On most Wednesdays throughout the year, the AC hosts Work It Wednesdays so that students may arrive at “normal” time and spend an hour with their peers and the AC staff enjoying breakfast snacks and working on assignments or studying for tests.

ALL SCHOOL SEMI-FORMAL DANCE: On Saturday, March 19, the junior class is hosting an All-School Dance from 8:00-11:30 p.m. Every student and her guest must have a ticket that was purchased in advance. Each student must also present her student ID when entering. Tickets will not be sold at the door. Students have received information about dance rules and expectations via SharePoint, email, and morning announcements. In order to ensure student safety, all students and guests must arrive by 9:00 p.m. and may not leave until 11:00 p.m. All students will be monitored with the use of a passive alcohol sensor upon arrival and departure of the dance.
SPRING BREAK: Spring break will begin Friday, April 1, since we met our Rocket Raffle ticket sale incentive, and continue through Sunday, April 10. School will resume on Monday, April 11.

PARENT PRAYER Our parent prayer group continues to meet each Tuesday morning from 8:30-9:00 a.m. in our new chapel. This group is more than just prayer; it’s community. It’s a chance for parents to pray for their daughters and their daughters’ friends and time to get to know more Assumption parents. Please park in any open space and enter the school through the main entrance. Please join us for any or all of these opportunities!

This week during LEAD & Learn Time, students had the opportunity to engage with their families in family meetings preparing for our Family Program Compassion Connections Lenten drive. Club leaders also met for training on leadership succession planning. On Thursday, classes were either homeroom or class meeting. And on Friday, we had the pleasure of celebrating the accomplishments of three of our coaches, Rick Stewart (swim), Barry Haworth (cross country), and Ron Kordes (volleyball), who have received state and national recognition.
Next week during LEAD & Learn Time, as part of our continued efforts to engage our families across grade levels, students will participate in a family sister activity on Monday. On Tuesday and Thursday, classes will alternate between homeroom and class meetings. During homeroom, they will engage in activities sponsored by our Science National Honor Society and in class meeting will join in a kick-off of our bleacher dances which will be showcased at the spring sports pep rally. And on Friday, the school community will participate in an important direction activity sponsored by our counseling office focused on preventing students driving under the influence.

PARENT/TEACHER/STUDENT CONFERENCES FOLLOW-UP: We would like to thank all of our parents who attended Parent/Teacher/Student Conferences on Wednesday night. We were proud to offer both in-person and virtual conferences to meet the individual needs of our families. We are so appreciative of your time and effort, and we value the opportunity to work together for your daughters. Whether you attended last night or not, this is a great time in the school year to have a conversation with your daughter about her academic progress. Is she meeting her goals? Does she need to make adjustments to her study habits? What does she need to do to have a successful end to the semester? There are many resources to help her achieve her goals. Encourage your daughter to work with her teachers, deans, and counselors to take advantage of resources such as the Achievement Center, Work It Wednesday, peer tutors, and study sessions offered by teachers as she needs them.
SCHOOL CULTURE SURVEY – Parent Input Needed: Through our sponsors, the Mercy Education System of the Americas, we will be participating in a school culture survey with other Mercy schools. This survey has been developed by Johns Hopkins University School of Education and their Institute for Education Policy. This research-based survey seeks to identify the alignment of a school’s mission with its practices and to determine whether those practices support academic achievement, social and emotional well-being, and civic formation. Strong school cultures have been linked to numerous positive academic and other outcomes – from short-term assessment performance to long-term civic engagement and educational attainment. This anonymous survey will be conducted from March 21st to April 1st with separate survey instruments for administrators, teachers, students, and parents. Please be on the lookout for this survey in the next few weeks. Your input is important to us and we want to hear from our parents. AHS’s goal is to reach 70% parent participation. If we reach that goal, your daughters will have a free dress down day scheduled for later this semester!
COLLEGE SCHOLARSHIP NIGHT: Thank you to those who were able to attend our virtual College Scholarship Night on Monday. The event was recorded for those who were unable to attend but would like this information: College Scholarship Information Night March 14, 2022 If you have any questions, please contact LEIGH JACKSON or KIM HABICH, our college counselors.
2022-2023 SCHOOL CALENDAR: We are in the process of working on the 2022-2023 school calendar. Although we have not finalized the calendar, we recognize that our families may need general calendar information in advance. In order to help with this need, the tentative key calendar dates for 2022-2023 are now posted on our website through this link: IMPORTANT DATES FOR 2022-2023 SCHOOL CALENDAR
ROCKET PARENT NETWORK (RPN) NEWS: Assumption’s Rocket Parent Network invites you to come for a speaker meeting with Sgt. Craig Browning of LMPD. Sgt. Browning is with the traffic unit and will discuss teens and impaired driving. All AHS parents are invited to attend this program, which will be held on Tuesday, March 29, at 6:30 p.m. in the AHS theater.
SUMMER ACADEMIC OPPORTUNITIES: Academic opportunities for the summer have been UPDATED. You can find these on our guidance department page by clicking here: SUMMER ACADEMIC OPPORTUNITIES. There are numerous opportunities available with many costing less than $1,000. Programs are grouped according to areas of interest like STEM or creative arts/design or general summer pre-college programs, etc. Applications are due in March and require the assistance of guidance for transcript releases, recommendations, and other documentation. Please contact LEIGH JACKSON or KIM HABICH with any questions.
AHS SUMMER CAMPS: We are excited to announce that our 2022 summer camp schedule is now open! This year, Assumption is offering over 40 fun-filled enrichment and athletic sessions (including 10 co-ed opportunities) to all K-9 students. Our goal is for each camper to have an exciting, safe summer and build new friendships. Registration is linked here. Please share with family and friends. Contact LAUREN LEGA with any questions.
ALUMNAE UNITE: The AHS Advancement Office is excited to announce the Alumnae Unite Campaign taking place March 23-25! Alumnae Unite is a giving campaign between the female graduates of Assumption, Bethlehem, Holy Cross, Mercy, Presentation, and Sacred Heart. The purpose is to raise funds for each school’s Annual Fund, which provides vital funding for student programs, activities, and tuition assistance. This year, we are All for 22 with each school trying to reach 22% alumnae giving participation. AHS is currently at 5.5% and needs 1,600 more alum donations to reach our goal. As an alumna, or parent of an alumna, we invite you or your daughter to support current and future students by making a donation during this campaign. For more information, click here or contact Abby Martin.
AFTERNOON CROSSING GUARD: The Louisville Police Department is actively seeking a traffic guard for AHS and St. Raphael in the afternoon at Bardstown Road and Lancashire. Please share this job posting with anyone who may be qualified or interested in being trained for this position: TRAFFIC GUARD JOB DESCRIPTION
SENIOR CITIZEN PROM RESCHEDULED: Assumption High School’s Junior Class Beta Club members have rescheduled the 19th annual “Senior Citizens Prom: Denim and Diamonds” for senior citizens on Saturday, March 26, from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. in the Assumption cafeteria. The Prime Time Band (with horn) will play music enjoyed by our guests. There will be food and dancing at no cost. Seating is limited. We ask all guests to call in advance to reserve their place: Terry Langley or Erica Lasley, Assumption High School 502-271-2531. Please share with any interested senior citizens! Assumption High School is currently mask optional; however, that may change at any time, so we ask that all guests bring a mask to wear to the prom.

LETTERS FROM COLLEGES: Attention, senior parents! Please have your senior daughters submit ALL letters received from colleges regarding admissions decisions, scholarship offers, and admission to special programs and honors colleges to the Guidance Office. The majority of colleges DO NOT provide this information directly to high schools, so your daughter is often our only source of information about this. Her timely sharing of this information is vital to the Senior Honors Celebration as we work to make sure we have all the correct information to celebrate your daughter and the Class of 2022. These letters can be hard copies, faxes, or scanned copies and can be emailed directly to COLLEGE.LETTERS@ahsrockets.org. We ask that students submit all of this information by Thursday, March 31.
MOTHER/DAUGHTER BREAKFAST: Just a reminder to our seniors and their mothers or mother figures in their lives – the Mother/Daughter Breakfast is Saturday, March 26, at the Crowne Plaza Hotel (830 Phillips Lane by the airport) from 9:30-11:30 a.m. Optional pictures will be available beginning at 8:00 a.m. Please note that it’s best to arrive early for photos so that you don’t have to wait until after the breakfast to get yours.
