FEBRUARY 25, 2022

Director of Mission Effectiveness, Mary Ann Steutermann
Countless hours of preparation have gone into planning a purposeful and meaningful Mission Week for your daughters. This year’s 15th annual Mission Week experience is designed to be a special experience of growth and transformation. Through a wide array of learning experiences, students are called to reflect upon their own dignity and worth, that of others, and the potential they each have to make the world a better place. Our Mission Week theme is “Unleash Your Power.” We invite your participation by holding us all close in prayer as we work with students to unleash their power – intellectually, physically, spiritually, and interpersonally. Please remember in prayer those traveling, those teaching, those serving, those learning, those reflecting, those planning and adapting plans. Our parent prayer group will not be meeting this week due to the changed schedule, but we invite you to take some time on Monday to offer this prayer for the week:
Be with us, Merciful God, as we seek to be
Your voice, Your hands, Your love
in the world this week.
Help us be open to growth and new opportunities.
Give us the strength to always be people of Mercy.
Amen.

To keep our families informed of the impact of COVID on our school, we continue reporting our positive COVID cases each week via the Rocket Report.
- This week, (reporting from Friday 2/18/22 through Thursday 2/24/22); we had 1 positive COVID case.
- Since the start of this semester, we have had 199 positive COVID cases. 176 were students and 23 were faculty/staff.
Mask Mandate: As we mentioned in our special message sent on February 10, AHS moved to mask optional starting February 14. We will be moving between being mask optional and mandating masks depending on the circumstances and will review the situation on a weekly basis and make a determination regarding masks for the following week.
Based on our current Covid numbers and declining cases in the greater community, AHS will continue to be mask optional for next week. That said, since next week is Mission Week and there will be some large group activities, your daughter must always have a mask with her in the event that we ask students to mask up or if she determines that she would feel more comfortable wearing a mask. In addition, masks are required for ACTS and on all buses (and vans) per federal law.

Thanks to the new cafeteria, longer lunches, and the space provided by our beautiful new Chapel, our Campus Ministry department started a weekly “Time Out Tune Up” on Wednesdays. Each week students, faculty, and staff are invited to spend time in the chapel at the beginning of each lunch for five minutes of prayer and mindfulness. Senior Ally Brown shared about her experience and how much she enjoys the weekly prayer, “I like to take a break between classes to connect and re-center with God.”

MISSION WEEK: Mission Week is Monday, February 28 – Thursday, March 3. We will begin school each morning one hour later at 9:15 a.m. and dismiss each day at 3:00 p.m. We believe that Mission Week activities are so important that we suspend classes for the week; all students are required to attend and participate in the activities scheduled, both on and off campus. All attendance policies apply during Mission Week–if your daughter is ill and unable to participate on a given day, please call the attendance office as usual. If at all possible, please do not schedule medical appointments for your daughter on days when she will be participating in activities off campus. There is no school on Friday, March 4.
BEFORE- AND AFTER-SCHOOL SUPERVISION: During Mission Week, before-school supervision will be provided in the cafeteria as usual beginning at 7:15 a.m. each day. After-school supervision will also be provided each day in the cafeteria until 4:30 p.m. as usual.
BLOOM THEATRE PROJECT: Bringing Life Onstage and Offstage through Ministry (BLOOM) is Assumption’s social justice theatre project. This year’s production, titled “Being the Change,” will take place on Friday, February 25, and Saturday, February 26, at 7:00 p.m. The project features six student-written plays based on the Mission Week theme, “Unleash Your Power.” The Advanced Theatre class invites you to experience these original works FREE of charge. General admission. No tickets required. If you or anyone in your party requires assistance or handicap accessibility, please contact DOUG SUMEY.

PARENT PRAYER GROUP ON TUESDAY MORNINGS: Parent prayer will not be held on Tuesday, March 1, due to Mission Week.
CHRISTIAN LEADERSHIP INSTITUTE: The Archdiocese of Louisville hosts the Christian leadership Institute each summer, and current freshmen, sophomores, and juniors are eligible to apply. It is a wonderful 5-day program that provides leadership development through a series of training workshops, prayer, Mass, group activities and team building to enhance leadership potential, while fostering personal and spiritual growth. It takes place this year from June 27 – July 1. The cost, which covers all materials, 5 days of lodging at the Flaget Center, and food, is $300, but because we know how great this program is, AHS is covering half of the cost for six students! If your daughter wants to be one of these students, please ask her to check the email from Mrs. Steutermann with instructions on how to apply by March 15.

ABSENCES BEFORE/AFTER SPRING BREAK: Please note that Assumption does not grant excused absences for college days on days immediately before or after spring break. We also cannot excuse students from school for family trips and/or vacations. If you are planning to take your daughter out of school for the whole day or before 3:00 p.m. on Thursday, March 31, whether to incorporate a college visit into or to get a jump start on Spring Break travel, please bear in mind that the absence will be unexcused and she will not be able to receive full credit for anything collected for a grade (including tests) in her classes while she is gone; makeup work that is completed and turned in will receive 50% of the grade earned. If your daughter becomes ill and is unable to attend school on Thursday, March 31, or Monday, April 11, she will need to provide a doctor’s note or have authorization from our school nurse for the absence to be excused. If you have any questions or concerns about this, please contact Dean of Students CINDI BAUGHMAN. Full details about our attendance and absence policies and procedures can be found in the STUDENT-PARENT HANDBOOK.
ALL SCHOOL DANCE/JUNIOR PROM: We know that many of our students are looking forward to coming together to enjoy our traditional all-school dance this school year. Our junior class has been hard at work in the process of planning the details for this dance which also serves as our junior prom. Based on our current circumstances, we confirmed for students this week that we are moving forward with our current planned date, Saturday, March 19, which we announced last fall and posted on the website calendar. Students may choose to bring a guest to the dance if they wish. Mrs. Baughman will be sending an email with information about dress code expectations in the next week. More information including theme and ticket details and information about time and expectations will be forthcoming after Mission Week.
SCHOLARSHIP APPLICATIONS: Scholarship applications for the 2022-2023 school year are now on our website. Applications are due by midnight via email on March 1, 2022. GREECE TRIP: AHS is planning a trip to GREECE for a weeklong Greek Isle Cruise during Spring Break 2023. All current freshmen, sophomores, and juniors and their parents/sisters are eligible to travel. This trip is priced right and the cost is all-inclusive. Students and parents can go ahead and register to save a spot, but deposits aren’t required until April 1, 2022. Want to find out more about this incredible opportunity? MONDAY OF MISSION WEEK DETAILS: The week of February 28-March 3 will be our 15th annual award-winning Mission Week. Our theme this year is “Unleash Your Power.”
MONDAY PROGRAM: On Monday of Mission Week, all students who are not on mission trips experience the same opportunities, while the rest of the week, activities are based on their grade level. Monday will begin with author, training consultant, TEDx speaker, and entrepreneur, Kristen Geez, who has a powerful message about how young people can “unleash their power” to build lives that are authentic and purposeful. Then later in the day, students will cycle through three rotations. One will be a workshop with Ms. Geez on specific strategies that address points made during her keynote. A second session will feature our BLOOM Theatre Project in which several completely student-written and directed 10-minute plays on the topic of “unleashing your power” will be performed. Since being able to access one’s power requires both physical and spiritual strength, the third session will begin with movement activities designed to highlight the importance of taking care of our bodies and an interactive address by local TV sports personality, author, and catechist, Gary Montgomery, that will focus on finding our “power” through our relationship with God. It will be a day to remember!
STUDENT DETAILS: We would like to share information given to students this week about Monday. Please remind your daughter of the following for Monday:
- Students may wear spirit wear as usual.
- Students do not need to bring their tablet PCs but do need to bring their school planner and a pen.
- Students will need to bring a bagged lunch or they can purchase lunch online the day before and up to 8:30 a.m. the morning of lunch. The online options will include a limited selection of sandwiches, chips, and drinks in the café. The guidance counselors have sent students the instructions for ordering online via email each day, and they can also be seen here.
- Students will be instructed on Monday about attire, lunch, and other details for the remainder of the week for their particular class level.
- Students need to check their email daily during Mission Week for important information.
