This is the last Friday Rocket Report for the 2020-2021 school year as summer vacation begins today for our students. Our school office will be open during the summer months Monday through Friday from 8:00-3:00 p.m. starting Tuesday, June 1, and ending Friday, July 30. Please feel free to call at any time. We will continue to give updates for the upcoming school year as usual during the summer through Special Messages via email. We are grateful to our entire community for truly being “home” to one another during such a challenging and unique year. Thank you for your support and for sharing your daughter with us. We hope that you and your family enjoy a fun-filled, healthy, and safe summer! #WeAreHome
COVID NUMBERS: As we did last semester, Assumption will report our number of COVID positive cases and quarantines for any individuals associated with our school on a weekly basis in the Rocket Report. As of yesterday, Assumption had the following reported cases or quarantines this week: (5/21; 5/24; 5/25; 5/26 and 5/27).
- 1 new positive COVID-19 case
- 4 new quarantine cases
- 46 total positive COVID-19 cases as reported to our local department of health as of January 5, the start of this semester (42 students and 4 faculty/staff)
And on a positive note, we ended this school year with no known transmissions of COVID here at AHS! Looking ahead to the next school year, we want to remind parents that AHS is planning to return to a full five day a week in person schedule in August. More information on plans for next year will be shared via Special Messages throughout this summer.
As previously communicated, the COVID vaccine is now available for those 12 years and older which opens the door for all of our students to be vaccinated. To help facilitate our students receiving the vaccine, Assumption is hosting a vaccine clinic in conjunction with Norton Healthcare on Thursday June 3 from 3:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. in our gym. For more information or to register to receive the vaccine please visit this link: AHS COVID-19 VACCINE CLINIC INFORMATION
Every current AHS student who comes out and receives the shot will be placed in a drawing for a chance to win a $1,000 tuition voucher. This includes incoming freshmen. If your daughter has already received her first and/or second dose of the vaccine, she is still eligible for the drawing. Just send proof of vaccination to attendance@ahsrockets.org by 11:59 p.m. on June 3rd and we will enter her name. Those receiving their first dose at our vaccine clinic can receive their second dose at any Norton Healthcare clinic. More info on receiving the second dose will be available the night of the clinic.
We have received questions as to whether the COVID vaccine will be required for students to attend AHS in the fall. At this time, the COVID vaccine is not mandatory for students in Kentucky. The decision to be vaccinated rests with the student and her parents. It’s up to parents and their daughters to decide what is best considering their unique situation and based on all available evidence. That said, we are encouraging students to be vaccinated not just to avoid the possibility of catching and spreading COVID but also to avoid the risk of quarantine which has placed a burden on our entire school community – especially for students. On multiple occasions throughout the year, one positive COVID case has resulted in the quarantine of up to over 20 students for a two-week period.
It’s important to note that only vaccinated individuals who are asymptomatic and are two weeks past their second dose of the vaccine are exempt from quarantine post exposure per our state and local health departments. As a reminder, the rules regarding quarantine are set by our state and local health departments and we are legally required to follow them. Currently, providing proof of being antibody positive will not eliminate the need to quarantine per health department regulations.
The good news is that nationwide COVID numbers are decreasing. Let’s pray that continues and by the start of school in August we can firmly put this pandemic behind us.
FINAL REPORT CARDS: Final report cards for the 2020-2021 school year will be emailed no later than June 3.
SUMMER MAILING: All families enrolled for the 2021-2022 school year will receive a mailing in mid to late July with information about the start of school. Please check with the school office if you do not receive the mailing as there will be important information to complete for the beginning of the school year.
CLASS LISTS FOR 2021-2022 SCHOOL YEAR:
- INCOMING FRESHMAN CLASS LISTS: Class lists and information about buying books for incoming freshmen will be emailed to parents by mid-June once Algebra and World Language placement tests are graded and classes are assigned.
- FOR RISING SOPHOMORES, JUNIORS, AND SENIORS: Your daughter will receive her list of classes for the 2021 – 2022 school year via school email by June 8. Please ask her to share this list with you. If there is a conflict with her schedule or she is interested in changing her classes, the schedule email will have directions on how to schedule a TEAMS meeting with her dean, Mrs. Fieldhouse (last names A – K) or Mrs. Schuhmann (last names L – Z) between June 9 – June 17. Before a schedule change can be finalized, the dean will also need a confirmation email from a parent and any necessary teacher approvals.
PURCHASING BOOKS FOR 2021-2022 SCHOOL YEAR: Assumption’s MBS Direct bookstore will open on July 5, and our free shipping week will be July 5-11, 2021. When you log onto MBS Direct with your daughter’s student ID number, it will link to her list of books. Book titles and ISBN numbers will be available for purchase through MBS. You are welcome to use this information to shop via other sources (ex. Amazon) if you would prefer. Please pay special attention to any “student message” listed at the top of the page regarding digital versions of texts. Most courses allow for student choice. Also, all art fee courses must be paid via MBS Direct. Please note: MBS Direct is the official supplier of textbooks for AHS students and works closely with the school to have all textbooks to the students by the start of school. If you choose to order books from a different online source, this needs to be done early enough to make sure the student has her books prior to the start of school; a student will not be excused from having a textbook if it was ordered late or from a vendor other than MBS Direct.
IMPORTANT JUNIOR INFORMATION – Attention, junior parents/guardians:
- SENIOR PORTRAITS: Two weeks ago in a class meeting, the juniors (rising seniors) were given important information about having their senior portraits taken at Illumination Studio. During this meeting they were told that they would receive a mailing from Illumination Studio with all of the information they would need. Due to a USPS error, that did not occur. On Wednesday, all juniors and parents of juniors were provided this information via email instead. Please make sure to read the information so that you can schedule your student’s portrait session before we return to school in August: AHS SENIOR PORTRAIT INFORMATION. You are welcome to have your student’s senior photos taken anywhere, but you must have her drape photo (her official senior portrait) taken at Illumination Studio. If you have questions, please contact Illumination Studio at 502-585-3103 or you can email Beth Smith at bsmith@studioillumination.com.
- JUNIOR SERVICE HOURS: Parents of the Class of 2023 – Juniors are required to complete 15 hours of service for their CST class, and they can complete these hours over the summer. Your daughter must complete the Class of ‘23 ACTS Form on SharePoint before beginning service. Please encourage your daughter to complete her 15 hours of service during the summer before the school year begins and log her hours on MobileServe as she completes them. Many options for service can be found on MobileServe as well. Your daughter can contact Katelyn Moore at Katelyn.moore@ahsrockets.org with any questions.
- COLLEGE ADVISING DATES FOR JUNIORS: Leigh Jackson, college counselor, will be available on several dates at the end of May and into the month of June to meet with current juniors (our rising seniors) and their parents to discuss the college application process. Mrs. Jackson works with the first part of the alphabet (A-K) and Mrs. Habich, who is currently on maternity leave, works with the latter part of the alphabet (L-Z). Mrs. Jackson will happily meet with students in either part of the alphabet. She will each be available from 8:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. on the following dates: Friday, May 28, through Tuesday, June 8. Please contact via email to set up an appointment – LEIGH JACKSON.
IMPORTANT INCOMING FRESHMAN INFORMATION – Attention, incoming freshman parents/guardians:
- TABLET PC ORIENTATION FOR STUDENTS AND PARENTS: FOR STUDENTS: Every new student must come to a mandatory 30-minute session to receive her tablet PC and her network credentials as well as a brief overview of the device and how to access further online computer training. Click this link to reserve your daughter’s date and time: New Student Tablet PC Orientation. FOR PARENTS: In order to best support your incoming freshman daughter’s transition and success with the use of her Tablet PC, Assumption requires a parent or guardian to attend a mandatory Tablet PC orientation. During this training, parents will receive information about the hardware, software, and programs regularly utilized in our classrooms as well as information about communications and technical support. Because it is a priority for us to partner with parents to support student success with the Tablet PC, incoming freshmen will only be able to take a Tablet PC home once she and a parent or guardian have attended an orientation and signed the Tablet PC Contract. We encourage you to schedule your orientation before your daughter’s Tablet PC pickup. We are offering two in-person sessions and one option on Zoom. Please click on this link to sign up for the parent orientation: https://signup.com/go/DeJrWOP
- CLASS OF 2025 EVENT: The Fun at the Green event for our class of 2025 Rockets is next week! We are very excited to see your smiling faces as we gather together to celebrate with some Assumption style fun. The event is at the Assumption Green on Wednesday, June 2, from 1:00-2:30 p.m. If you are planning to attend, we ask that you register in advance here. During this field day experience, you’ll rotate through activities that include inflatables, kickball, yard games, chalk art, and even a sweet treat for our newest Rockets! Email Kelsey.gunter@ahsrockets.org with any questions.
- CLASS OF 2025 SPECIAL WEBSITE: We continue to update the special website for the Class of 2025. On this site you will see a month-to-month breakdown with dates to note on your calendar and items that need to be completed or turned in. A few of the time-sensitive items you will want to pay special attention to this summer include SUMMER SEMINAR REGISTRATION, SUMMER TABLET PC TRAINING FOR STUDENTS AND PARENTS, and SUMMER READING INFORMATION.If you have any additional questions, please feel free to contact the Main Office at 502-458-9551.
SUMMER READING: Students received their summer reading requirements in English classes last week. These requirements can also be found on the website under Current Parents: https://www.ahsrockets.org/parents/current-parents/summer-reading/. Summer reading is an important component of the English curriculum, and the books read in the summer will be incorporated into the first unit of study in your daughter’s English class next school year. PLEASE NOTE: If a student decides to make any schedule changes over the summer that result in a change in academic level for English, she is required to read the book assigned for that level, which may be a different book and/or a different assignment. She will need to find the correct summer reading assignment on the website.
SHAHEEN’S SUMMER UNIFORM SALE: Shaheen’s will be having a special Uniform Sale June 1-July 3. You are invited to buy uniforms early and receive a 10% off storewide discount. Please consider taking advantage of this special opportunity, especially if your daughter has grown over the past year. Recently, some girls’ skirt lengths have crept up to unacceptable lengths. Rising sophomores will need ACTS pants for next year, and some of your daughters may have decided that they’d like a uniform quarter-zip sweatshirt. The Summer Uniform Sale would be a great time to make these purchases. As a neat and appropriate uniform teaches our students to have pride in their own appearance as well as in their school, we ask for your help by investing in your daughter’s uniform for the 2021-2022 school year.
UNIFORM/SPIRIT WEAR DONATIONS: Guidance is now accepting uniform/spirit wear donations. Do you have any extra uniform pieces or spirit wear around your house? The Guidance Office uses the donated uniforms for two purposes. The Rocket Parent Network sells donated uniform pieces to raise money for their scholarships. The guidance counselors also use donated uniform pieces to help students in financial need and for whom the replacement of a uniform piece would be cost prohibitive. Donated uniforms and spirit wear may be dropped off to the main office. We ask that you please launder any donated items and bring the items in bags that are tied or sealed.
SUMMER ACADEMIC OPPORTUNITIES: Academic opportunities for the summer have been UPDATED. You can find these on our guidance department page by clicking here: Academic Summer Opportunities 2021. There are numerous opportunities available with many costing less than $1,000. Programs are grouped according to areas of interest like STEM or Creative Arts/Design or General Summer Pre-College Programs, etc. Please contact LEIGH JACKSON or KIM HABICH with any questions.
ACT TEST PREP FOR SOPHOMORES AND JUNIORS: We are offering our students the opportunity to partner with TorchPrep, an innovative test training program that cracks the code on improving ACT scores. TorchPrep has continually yielded outstanding ACT scores for our students. Last year, Assumption students who participated in TorchPrep saw an average score increase of 2.2 points. All courses include 30 hours of direct training, four full-length simulated tests, TorchPrep training manual, customized study plan, and guaranteed results. The training program will take place at Assumption June 7 – 11 from 9:00 a.m.–4:30 p.m. Early registration deadline is June 1. More information about programs, registration, and fees can be found at www.torchprep.com.
FROM THE ATHLETIC OFFICE – PHYSICALS: For athletes: A reminder to all parents of Assumption athletes: It is a KHSAA requirement that your daughter has a current physical on file with the athletic office before she may participate in tryouts or practice of any kind. The physical must be submitted on the KHSAA form: https://khsaa.org/forms/ge04complete.pdf. Tryouts for fall sports begin July 15. Please call and make a doctor’s appointment for your daughter. There are no group physicals offered at school. Physicals may be turned in at the Main Office or mailed to Assumption High School. If you have questions regarding the KHSAA physical, please call the Athletics Office, 502-271-2555.
