Dear Parents/Guardians,
What a difference a week makes! When we left for spring break, winter was still in the air, but as we have returned this week, both the warmer weather and the enthusiasm of our refreshed students, faculty, and staff are true signs that spring is finally here. The feelings of anticipation and energy that spring brings have been enhanced by the fact that our physical campus is experiencing exciting growth. Returning this week, we witnessed noticeable progression to the new building as construction continues on our main campus and officially opened a new addition at the Assumption Green. It was a beautiful evening last night as we celebrated the dedication of our new softball turf. The addition of the turf field alongside our indoor training center which opened last year allows our student athletes to practice and compete using state-of-the-art facilities. This week reminded us that the future is certainly bright for the community of Assumption!
COVID NUMBERS: As we did last semester, Assumption will report our number of COVID positive cases and quarantines for any individuals associated with our school on a weekly basis in the Rocket Report. As of yesterday, Assumption’s COVID-19 numbers for this week are: (4/5; 4/6; 4/7; and 4/8)
- 2 new positive COVID-19 cases (both students)
- 0 new quarantine cases
- 38 total positive COVID-19 cases as reported to our local department of health as of January 5, the start of this semester (34 students and 4 faculty/staff)
It’s important to note that there have been no known transmissions of COVID here at AHS. As a reminder to our parents, Assumption is required to report positive cases and quarantines of all individuals associated with our school to the State of Kentucky, our local health department as well as the Archdiocese of Louisville.
The state has recently revised its travel advisory. While the CDC and the state continue to discourage non-essential travel for those who are not vaccinated, they have revised the requirements for quarantine after travel and now recommend the following:
- Get tested with a viral test 3-5 days after travel and stay home and self-quarantine for a full 7 days after travel. If the test is negative, stay home and self-quarantine for the full 7 days. If the test is positive, self-isolate to protect others from getting infected.
- If choosing not to test, stay home and self-quarantine for 10 days after travel.
- Self-monitor for COVID-19 symptoms; isolate and get tested if you develop symptoms.
Again, the above applies to those who are not vaccinated. For those who are vaccinated or to see the entire travel advisory please click here. If you have any questions regarding the travel advisory, please contact our school nurse Laura Burnam at 271-2507.
This week Kentucky announced that individuals 16 years and older are now eligible to be vaccinated. We encourage parents of students who meet that age requirement to have their daughter vaccinated. We ask that students who are fully vaccinated provide proof of vaccination to our school nurse Laura Burnam at laura.burnam@ahsrockets.org. We need this information on file in the event your daughter is exposed to COVID-19 so we can demonstrate to the health department that she would not need to quarantine.
In addition, we continue to be in discussion with the Archdiocese of Louisville and other Catholic high schools regarding how some off the recent revisions at the state level regarding COVID health and safety restrictions could possibly impact our current hybrid model. We will be sending a special message next week with an update.
As always, we remain grateful for your understanding and support as we continue to navigate this challenging year and work to continue to keep our Assumption community safe.

- LETTERS FROM COLLEGES: Attention, senior parents! In order to have the most accurate information for our senior class, we ask them to submit a copy of their college acceptance letters, honors program acceptance letters, and scholarship offers. Your daughters have heard this reminder at class meetings and received the reminder via email numerous times. We wanted to make sure that you were aware of the expectation that seniors submit a copy of all college admission acceptance letters, admission into honors colleges and special programs, as well as scholarship offers to the Guidance Office. This submission can be in paper form, or students may also forward their letters to college.letters@ahsrockets.org Although the deadline has passed, we will still accept the paper copies until Monday, April 19. After that time, our materials used at the Senior Honors Ceremony will be prepared for printing and we will not be able to make any further changes.
NHS SELECTION DECISIONS: The NHS Council at Assumption has reviewed student applications for selection in the Assumption Chapter of the National Honor Society. Letters of decision will be mailed in the coming days. Thank you for your patience and flexibility. Any questions? Email KELLY KIRWAN.
AP EXAMS: All students, whether virtual or hybrid, who have signed up to take an AP exam are scheduled to take the paper and pencil exam May 3 – May 17 at Highland Hall. If a student is on quarantine or unable to make this scheduled date due to illness, College Board has also scheduled two additional weeks of exam administration windows for students unable to test on the original dates. Your daughter’s AP teachers are keeping her informed, and full information can be found here: AP Test Information for 2021 Please contact JUDY FIELDHOUSE if you have any questions.
PARENTS OF JUNIORS: REMINDERS ABOUT UPCOMING EVENTS TO CELEBRATE THE CLASS OF 2022 THIS SPRING: As noted in our last Rocket Report before spring break, we have been carefully planning how to celebrate the special rites of passage of junior year: junior prom and the junior ring ceremony. As you are well aware, circumstances this year present challenges to celebrating these traditional events, but we are committed to marking these special milestones for the Class of 2022 and have been working diligently on details for these junior events. It has been challenging because we do not know what the state and local guidelines will look like throughout the spring and, as always, our top priority in our planning is the health and safety of our students and their families as we work to minimize exposure and the risk of quarantining for all. With that in mind, although these traditional events must look different, we have developed a plan that focuses on the heart of what each event represents to our juniors as they prepare to become the leaders of our school. We appreciate your understanding that, as has been the case throughout this unusual school year, plans for in-person events/activities could be subject to change depending on guidance and/or directives from state/local department of health. Thank you for your support as we work to celebrate each of our 245 juniors in this special class under unusual circumstances.
- JUNIOR “MASK”ERADE: Traditionally, the junior prom provides an opportunity for the juniors to work together to celebrate their class and each other, and that is something we can do this year with a bit of a different spin! Our junior class leaders have recognized that it is the perfect year for a “Mask”erade. On Saturday, April 24, the junior class will host a Junior “Mask”erade for the class of 2022 at the Assumption Green. To facilitate our Healthy at Assumption protocols and approach to this event, juniors will sign up for a staggered arrival in small groups beginning at 7:50 p.m. with the “mask”erade ending at 10:00 p.m. and will stay within their small groups throughout the experience. Tickets for the event will be purchased in advance and will be $10 per junior. This year only juniors will be able to attend. Guests will not be permitted. A virtual “mask”erade will also be offered alongside the in-person event. Students will receive information about the virtual event, dance rules and expectations, ticket sales, and sign up via class meetings, email and announcements next week and have received the link to RSVP and reserve their staggered arrival time. We look forward to safely dancing the night away with the Class of 2022!
- JUNIOR RING BLESSING CEREMOMY: In order to celebrate the class of 2022 as they symbolically assume the leadership the school as they receive senior rings, we will celebrate a Junior Ring Blessing Ceremony during our LEAD & Learn Wednesday activities on Wednesday, May 19. Details about the time of the event will be shared as we get closer to May 19. Juniors will be invited to campus to celebrate the event together as a class. Due to event distancing requirements and limited capacity in the gym, only students will be able to attend the event in-person; however, we will live-stream the event for those who would prefer to participate virtually and for parents/guardians and family to view.
LEAD & Learn Update: During our LEAD & Learn TUESDAY next week, our juniors will have the opportunity to take their second national ACT exam on campus. All other students will begin the day in homeroom followed by independent learning time and class meetings. At class meetings, seniors will learn more about the upcoming end of the year celebration for their class, our 21 for 21, hear from our director of alumnae relations, prepare for our month of Assumption Spirit in April as they plan for their upcoming field dance and theme days. Freshmen and sophomores will also prep for Assumption Spirit in April and hear about the opportunity to apply for next year’s recruitment team. All freshmen, sophomores and seniors will also meet with their English teachers to prepare for our upcoming Timed Writing for all classes which will occur on LEAD & Learn Wednesdays later this month. Sophomores will then wrap up their morning with their ACTS Closing Prayer Service and information about Junior ACTS for next school year.
AHS WALK PERMISSION SLIPS: We are looking forward to the Walk for Assumption on Thursday, April 29 and will be sharing more details about how the Walk will work this year soon. We still need to gather one important item for all our students who plan to Walk–the signed Walk Permission Slip. WALK PERMISSION SLIPS were handed out in homeroom this week and all students also received a copy via email. All Walk Permission Slips need to be signed and returned by Friday, April 16. Students who are in-person next week can return them to homeroom. If virtual, the permission slips may be returned by dropping it off in the retreat letter mailbox outside of the Arts and Science wing doors, mail to Assumption High School at 2170 Tyler Lane Louisville, KY 40205 or bring to the main office if you are already coming to school for another reason. All permission slips must be printed and signed; it may not be an electronic copy.
HAS YOUR DAUGHTER RECEIVED A COVID-19 VACCINATION? A number of our students have been able to receive a COVID-19 vaccination because of their jobs or medical conditions. If your daughter has been vaccinated against COVID-19, please send a copy of her vaccination record to our school nurse, Laura Burnam, to keep on file in case a question about whether she would need to quarantine should arise.
DIVERSITY CLUB: All AHS parents and students are invited to attend our next Diversity Club meeting on Zoom. Our featured speaker for the April meeting is Dr. Ricky Jones from U of L. ALUMNAE UNITE: The AHS Advancement Office is excited to announce the Alumnae Unite Campaign taking place April 14-16! Instead of focusing on competition as in past years with #RivalsUnite4Girls, Alumnae Unite is all about collective participation. This year, we have joined with Bethlehem, Holy Cross, Mercy, Presentation, and Sacred Heart to put the spotlight on women’s giving. The purpose is to raise funds for each school’s Annual Fund, which provides vital funding for student programs, activities, and tuition assistance. This year, we are All For 21. Each school will have 60 hours to help their alma mater reach 21% of alumnae giving to their Annual Fund. This campaign begins at noon on Wednesday, April 14, and ends at midnight on Friday, April 16. For more information, click here or contact Abby Blandford.
Gratefully,
Martha Tedesco
