Lanie Blood '23 - 1st Place Bump, Bump, BumpI escape to your country, the land of the free But you have no problem discriminating against me Sitting in this chaotic cage Like some sort of rabid dog in rage The sun peals my skin I cry for my mother to hold me again I scream, but no one here’s me, I’m dead All I possess is the fear in my burning head My heart beats like a pinkie’s thump Powerless and weak, a little bump, bump, bump My eyes sewn shut never to open again No one notices me, like a runt in a pen A lost tear walks down my ghost face America, land of the free, everything erased
Emma Nevitt '23 - 2nd Place insomnia:tossing and turning i need the rest i know i do one sleepless night turns to two what am i to do tossing and turning it has been a while i am an open file my internal dial turning on high alert nothing ever works tossing and turning another exhausting night restlessness dulling any light maybe tonight i’ll be done tossing and turning until i finally see the sun
Aslan Bishop '23 - 3rd Place The Astounding Island: Visceral Tidesas I approach my breath is taken closer still my senses awaken the waves roll in tall and proud “my, how lovely!”, I say aloud this beautiful sand this beautiful sea on the astounding island called Maui from lava rocks the sand is formed with the tantalizing sun its easily warmed the sights the sounds the touch the smell how this place has done me well into the waters I will soon delve in for now, I plan to savor this heaven i am the lock, and this is my key on the astounding island called Maui as the breeze flows I look behind the smell of hibiscus so sweet so kind oh, what wanders my eyes can see the sun is setting right before me brilliant colors of pink and gold they fill the sky truth be told “Mahalo” I say to the sky, “Mahalo” I say to the sea on the astounding island called Maui
Delaney Schwab '21 - 2nd Place Mi Corazon AzulThe women in the garden, so fair and sweet, a single glance my way makes me feel complete. Their beauty is striking, soft yet enticing. Son tan bellas damas, ellas son delicadas como ramas. They shine like the sky, so bright and blue. Their beauty is messing with Mi Corazon Azul. They laugh and smile, shimmering in the light. My heart aches so strong it could take flight. Mi Corazon beats loudly, calling for a mate. I examine their features, polished and ornate. Ellas corren por mi mente todo los dias, ellas son inhumanas, hermosas y etéreas. This feeling inside is so pure and new, but these ladies are playing with mi Corazon Azul. I could describe them in millions of ways. They never fail to catch my gaze. This love I feel is so, so true, yet my heart always fails me, Mi Corazon Azul.
Amanda Duvall '21 - 3rd Place Little Elephants Marching in a LineThree elephants marching in a line. Two seem sick but the other one’s fine. The one that’s well Can’t quite tell, That the other two aren’t feeling as swell. One sick little elephant falls in a lake Was it on purpose, or was it a mistake? Two little elephants marching in a line One seems sick, but the other one’s fine. One sick little elephant tripped on a snake, Was it on purpose, or was it a mistake? One little elephant marching in a line He’s very sick, but he says he’s fine.
