Dear Parents,

A special thank you this week to our APO (Assumption Parent Organization) parent representatives who planned special Faculty/Staff Appreciation activities this week.  We loved our MANY door prize drawings via email on Tuesday and the very special gift that we received at home on Thursday.  We really appreciate everyone who helped to make this week so special. We are so grateful for your generosity and support!

CALENDAR NOTES:

  • Week of April May 4-8
  • Monday – Thursday: Virtual Learning Days as scheduled
  • Seniors:  Last day of classes:  Thursday, May 7
  • Friday – No virtual classes for all (no Day 3) (exact schedule TBD)
  • Underclasswomen:  Celebration of Achievement Day including homeroom time, class meeting time, and Celebration of Achievement virtual experience; catch-up day

SENIOR PARENT LETTER: A special message email will be sent out this afternoon – Thursday, April 30 – to parents of seniors giving details about senior activities and graduation events.  Senior Parents – please be sure to check your email this afternoon for this important information. Thank you for your patience as we have worked to plan for our senior end of the year celebrations during this unusual time.

SENIOR EXIT SURVEYS AND INTERVIEWS:  It’s almost May and time for senior exit surveys and interviews!  We want to provide an opportunity for our seniors to give us feedback on their Assumption experience over the past four years.  On Monday, seniors will be sent a senior exit survey to complete. They will also be invited to group senior exit interviews with their principal during their study next Tuesday and Wednesday via Teams meetings.  Seniors may complete the survey or attend a group interview or participate in BOTH. Please encourage your senior daughter to complete her survey by next Friday, May 8 and visit with Mrs. Tedesco on Tuesday and Wednesday!

AP TESTING GUIDE AND SCHEDULE:  If your daughter is taking an AP exam, please make sure she is keeping on top of her emails from College Board.  Any correspondence will be coming from College Board and not her teachers.  If you would like more details, this AP TESTING GUIDE and EXAM DAY CHECKLIST from College Board are very helpful.

CLASS OF 2021 SENIOR RING PICK-UP THROUGH BALFOUR:  Parents of Juniors – We are happy to report that senior rings ordered by the Class of 2021 through Balfour are now ready.  Balfour will be hosting a curbside pick-up on Monday, May 4, from 2:00-5:00 p.m. at Balfour which is located at 10821 Bluegrass Parkway, Louisville, KY 40299.  If you are unable to pick up at this time, you will need to contact Balfour to make arrangements to receive your ring at (502) 499-7100.

RETURNING/RETRIEVING ITEMS FROM SCHOOL:  We are working on a safe plan for all students to return their tablet PCs, library books, and other items to school as well as to retrieve any items from student lockers or classrooms.  Plans will be communicated later in May with a possible return scheduled during the first week of June.

2019-2020 FAMILY COMPETITION WINNER: As our year comes closer to an end, it’s time to celebrate our family competition champion. This year’s winner is the Tullamore family! As a congratulations to Tullamore, they will be receiving a special celebratory tee shirt.  Seniors will have theirs mailed home this summer, and the rest of the family will receive theirs at the beginning of next school year.  Traditionally, family members have received their t-shirts in May and have been allowed to enjoy spirit wear during final exams.  So, instead, our underclass Tullamore family members will be allowed to wear spirit wear during the first full week of school in the fall. Congratulations to our Tullamore family on all their hard work and leadership throughout the year!

CELEBRATION OF ACHIEVEMENT:  The Celebration of Achievement is an assembly held annually to recognize accomplishments of our underclasswomen in the areas of academics, service, fine arts, and leadership.  Affectionately referred to as “The Rosies,” this assembly’s objectives include spotlighting the accomplishments of the current school year, encouraging and challenging students toward goals for the following year, and celebrating our year as a community.  Although we cannot host the Rosies in our traditional format this year, Assumption is excited to invite all students to participate in a virtual Rosies experience next Friday, May 8 at 11:00 a.m.  Students will be emailed a link to a brief Rosies video presentation as well as a link that will allow them to view the accomplishments of all underclassmen from this school year and to find their own names and recognition. Parents are welcome to join their daughters in viewing the video as well.

PARKING FOR JUNIORS AND SENIORS FOR NEXT YEAR:  Our current sophomores and juniors have already been given information about applying for parking spaces for next year. Students need to have their driver’s license (not just a permit) by August 10 to apply for a parking space before school starts and begin driving to school on the first day of the new school year. Because we believe that if the girls are mature and responsible enough to drive to school, they should be mature and responsible enough to listen to information shared at their recent class meetings, read email, submit their own parking requests online, and work with school personnel to resolve any difficulties they have related to applying for parking, we will work only with students (not parents) on parking issues, and we will not be sending detailed information about applying for parking to parents. That said, to help parents of rising juniors and seniors encourage their daughters in taking care of parking business themselves, here are some key dates the girls will need to keep in mind:

  • Thursday, April 30: all rising juniors and seniors were emailed link to submit a request for a parking space
  • Monday, May 4: all rising juniors and seniors will be emailed an invitation from Carpool to School to set up an account and establish carpools
  • Thursday, July 30: deadline for submitting a parking request for space assignment before school starts; deadline for having passengers set up in Carpool to School (the number of other AHS students in the carpool on this date will determine the priority for assigning parking).

If your daughter wants to drive to school next year, please encourage her to consider giving a ride to another student to/from school, practice, etc. It builds community, is good for the environment, and helps Assumption be a good neighbor by reducing the amount of school-related traffic on Bardstown Road in the morning and afternoon. Parking will be very tight for the new school year, so carpooling will be more important than ever; as has been the case for the last several years, priority in assigning parking will be given to students with carpools and will not be based on seniority. A senior without a registered, official carpool should expect to park at the Legion.

CARPOOL INFORMATION FOR PARENTS:  Assumption is pleased to announce that we will again partner with CarpoolToSchool.com for the 2020-2021 school year—this online service creates an Assumption-only network that allows parents and students to set up carpools to and/or from school that others can then request to join or request to join a carpool to/from school that has already been set up by an AHS junior or senior who drives to school or another AHS parent. As noted in the information about student parking above, this is one of the many ways that we build community, respect the environment, and try to be good neighbors by reducing the amount of school-related traffic on Bardstown Road. Parents of incoming freshmen and rising sophomores should be receiving an email from CarpoolToSchool.com on or about Monday, May 18, inviting you to participate.  Parents of rising juniors and seniors who are interested in using this service may log on to CarpoolToSchool.com and access their already existing accounts; just “request a new password” if you don’t remember what you set up previously. If you have any difficulties setting up or accessing a CarpoolToSchool account, please contact Angie Dusch, assistant to the deans, and she will be happy to help you.

FLIK ACCOUNTS:  All monies in the FLIK lunch accounts of current freshmen, sophomores, and juniors will be credited to next year’s account for the 2020-2021 school year.  Senior parents – FLIK will be processing refunds to account balances for senior lunch accounts.  If you have any questions, please contact FLIK directly at lin.johnson@compass-usa.com.

BOOK BUYBACKS:  Please view the flyer and video linked below for instructions on how to return your daughter’s books to MBS through their Online Buyback Program since we will be unable to facilitate an EZ drop buyback due to our building closure.  For questions, please contact vb@bncservices.com or call 1.800.325.3252 as their customer service support line is open 24/7.

FINAL EXAMS/FINAL GRADES/FAILURES:  Given this unique school year, we have decided to cancel our traditional final exams as well as exam days for all grade levels.  Instead, we will follow the schedule outlined below for student last days and students with failing grades.

Students who are passing their courses with at least a 70% for the semester and/or the year and have met all course requirements will have their last day of classes on:

  • Seniors:  Thursday, May 7
  • Underclasswomen:  Thursday, May 14

Students who are NOT passing their courses with at least a 70% for the semester and/or the year and/or have NOT met all course requirements will be required to meet with their teacher virtually during the week of May 11-15 for the seniors and the week of May 18-22 for the underclasswomen and complete work designated by their teacher by the dates listed below:

  • Seniors:  Friday, May 15
  • Underclasswomen:  Friday, May 22

Work must be completed successfully in order to earn a passing grade; participation in these extended days and completion of the work does not guarantee a passing grade.

40 BOOKS CHALLENGE: The deadline for this year’s 40 Books Challenge has been extended until Monday, May 4. This challenge encourages students to read for enjoyment and rewards them for meeting goals for independent reading. Our goal is for our students to read at least 40 books during their four years at Assumption, with incentives awarded for meeting the yearly goal of ten books and the ultimate goal of 40 books.  With more time at home now, this is an opportunity for your daughter to relax with a good book as an alternative to being entertained by electronics.

Gratefully,

Martha Tedesco

Principal
