Dear Parents,

Today we held our annual Walk for Assumption kick-off assembly and talked to your daughters about the importance of financial aid.  We reminded them that participating in the walk is one way they can help secure the future of AHS by contributing to our financial aid funds. We also reminded them that we all have a responsibility to look to the future of our school. We charged them with helping secure our future by being an advocate for Assumption in their own communities.  As we prepare to recruit the future members of the Class of 2024, we shared with them our latest video that we are showing on our grade school recruitment visits.  The video will be shared with our entire AHS community via Facebook and YouTube today.  We welcome you to view the video and, like your daughters, share with prospective students and their families your love for Assumption. Our entire community has a hand in building the Class of 2024, and we can’t wait to see what our future holds!

CAMPUS MINISTRY:

  • MERCY DAY CELEBRATION:  On Tuesday, September 24, we join schools across the country who are sponsored by the Sisters of Mercy to celebrate our common identity and mission.  At our assembly, we will celebrate the many ways that we make mercy real as individuals and as a community, especially in the areas of the “critical concerns” of the Sisters of Mercy. We will also name this year’s “Models of Mercy.”   We welcome you to join us at 10:15 a.m. in the gym for this special celebration.
  • PARENT PRAYER:  The Parent Prayer group meets each Tuesday morning from 8:15 – 8:45 a.m. in the chapel at St. Catherine’s Convent which is right across Tyler Lane from AHS.  Just look for the sign! If you are unable to attend but would like them to pray for a particular intention, please email it to our campus minister at maryann.steutermann@ahsrockets.org.We hope you find comfort in knowing that we are praying for your intention even if you can’t be present.

WALK FOR ASSUMPTION:  On Friday, September 27, we will hold our 37th annual Walk for Assumption, an event to which our students make contributions to support financial assistance at Assumption.  This year’s theme chosen by the students is “Walk to Save the World”.  In order to participate in the Walk for Assumption, students must sell a minimum of three Rocket Raffle tickets and turn in a signed Walk permission form. Tickets cost $25 each, and the purchaser is entered into a drawing for $20,000, which will take place at our Rocket Spectacular on Saturday, February 1, 2020.  If the school reaches our goal of 2,850 tickets sold, not only will we have an amazing Walk for Assumption, but students will earn the day off from school on the Friday, March 27, 2020, the Friday before spring break!   We are encouraging the girls to reach out not only to their parents but to other people in their lives who would like the opportunity to support her and the community of Assumption through the Walk and the Rocket Raffle.  We hope that over the next week you will help your daughter brainstorm ways that she can sell her tickets to help support financial aid and to make the Walk a success!

Collections of the students’ contributions will take place at lunches the weeks of Monday, September 16, and Monday, September 23.   The deadline for collection is Wednesday, September 25, at 1:30 p.m.

Walk collection/Walk permission forms for sophomores, juniors, and seniors:  Sophomores, juniors, and seniors should turn in their three Rocket Raffle tickets and a signed permission slip by Wednesday, September 25, in order to participate in the Walk.  The first three Rocket Raffle tickets and permission slip must be turned in together.  Students may continue to turn in Rocket Raffle tickets up until the deadline in order to support our efforts.

Walk collections/Walk and Sleepover permission forms for freshmen and Walk Sleepover: On Thursday, September 26, freshmen are invited to a Walk Sleepover in the gym. The cost of the Walk Sleepover is $5. In order to participate, freshmen need to turn in their Walk permission slip, sleepover permission slip, a minimum of three Rocket Raffle tickets, and $5. The two signed permission slips, tickets, and $5 are due by the end of lunches on Wednesday, September 25. All freshmen are asked to turn in both permission slips even if a freshman is not planning to attend the sleepover. Freshmen should arrive for the sleepover between 8:00-8:30 p.m. and enter through the doors at the gym lobby. Please contact JENNIFER RUCKRIEGEL or THERESA SCHUHMANN if you have any questions about the Freshman Walk Sleepover. Pick up time on Friday, September 27, will be 11:30 a.m.

Walk/Sleepover Permission Forms

For the safety of our students, to participate in the walk each student must turn in a Walk Permission form signed by her guardian. A student may not sign the form on behalf of their guardian, and a check on signature is not a substitute for a signature on a form. Guardian signatures are only valid on the AHS Walk Permission form/s.

CLUB INTRO WEEK FOLLOW-UP:  We hope your daughter took advantage of the opportunity to explore what our clubs have to offer, to talk with current club members, and to write down upcoming club meeting dates during Club Introduction week and our club introductory meetings this past week.  We encourage you to ask her about the clubs that interest her this weekend—you may even ask her which club meetings she attended during PM RocketTime on Tuesday and Thursday.  Information on clubs can be found in the  2019-2020 STUDENT-PARENT HANDBOOK.  We also encourage students to look for club meeting dates via our school calendar on the Assumption website where all club meetings will be posted, as well as on our PowerSchool LMS club pages on which club moderators will post club information.

ACADEMIC BANQUET:  The annual Academic Banquet is Sunday, September 29 at 1:00 p.m.at Marriott East.  RSVPs are due Wednesday, September 18.  If you have any questions, please contact KATHY FLEISCHER.

ROCKET PARENT NETWORK:  This is your last chance to join the Rocket Parent Network and/or order a Student/Parent Directory.  The Rocket Parent Network is a trustworthy group of Assumption parents united to providing a drug and alcohol free social environment for teens. Parents commit to chaperoning their daughters and their friends to be sure that alcohol and drugs are not used while at their home. Membership dues are $10 per year, or $30 for four years. A directory is free in a parent’s first year of membership and may be purchased for $5 per year in subsequent years.  If you would like to join the RPN, please visit this website:  RPN Website for a membership form.   If you would like to order a parent directory, please contact Kim Steinke at 458-9551 ext. 2539 or by e-mail at KIM STEINKE.

MOTHER-DAUGHTER BUNCO AND BARGAINS:  Save the date!  Mother-Daughter Bunco Night is scheduled for Tuesday, October 15, at 7:00 p.m. in the cafeteria.  All moms and daughters are invited.  Cost is $5 a couple.  There will be food, prizes, and used uniform pieces and spirit wear for sale.  Please contact DAWN DEWEESE for more information.

ASSUMPTION PARENT ORGANIZATION (APO) NEWS:

  • Walk for Assumption AND Rocket Raffle – It’s here!  Today was Walk kick-off day!  The girls are gearing up for the Walk, which will take place on Friday, September 27.  Today, your daughter received 4 tickets in an envelope. She must sell 3 to participate in the Walk.  Each ticket is $25.00 per chance to win $20,000. Students can sell paper tickets or they can also sell tickets online. Please ask her about the exciting incentives she can take part in. Additional tickets are available in the Advancement Office. All proceeds benefit the financial needs of our students.

REQUESTS FOR EXCUSED ABSENCES:  If your daughter needs to miss school for a reason that is not medically related, the absence must be approved in advance for it to be excused and make-up work completed. Requests for driver’s testing, college visits, participation in club sports or other activities, etc., need to be made in writing and received at least a week ahead of time if at all possible. Your daughter may bring your written note to the attendance office or you may email your request to attendance@ahsrockets.org (as long as you are making the request in advance).   Please do not contact your daughter’s teachers directly to ask them to excuse her from class because absences must be approved by the administration and not individual teachers.

REQUESTS FROM THE ATTENDANCE OFFICE/SCHOOL NURSE:

  • EARLY DISMISSALS:  If you know when your daughter comes to school in the morning that she has a medical appointment during the school day that will require her to leave school, please send a note requesting the early dismissal with your daughter that morning and have her bring it to the attendance office before school. If you are making an appointment for your daughter after she leaves for school in the morning, please email Mrs. Burnam or call her in the attendance office to let her know AND tell your daughter to stop by to see Mrs. Burnam between classes to get information about the appointment and an early dismissal slip.
  • GOING HOME SICK:  If your daughter emails or otherwise contacts you during the school day to tell you that she needs to come home sick, please tell her to see Mrs. Burnam in the health room/attendance office before you jump in the car to come get her. Mrs. Burnam is a fully licensed RN who can assess your daughter’s health situation and consult with her to determine if she does, indeed, need to leave school because she is ill. If this is the case, Mrs. Burnam will then contact you to come to school and pick up your daughter.  She can also advise parents, based upon her professional analysis, if the student’s condition seems to be worthy of a doctor’s visit.

The unannounced pickups mentioned above require Mrs. Burnam to leave the attendance office/health room to find students, and we simply do not have a surplus of office staff to cover the attendance office/health room in her absence. More importantly, when she has to leave the health room/attendance office unattended, other students who need her services are unable to get them.  Thank you in advance for your help with these issues–you are helping us make sure that the health needs of all our students are being met.

COLLEGE FINANCIAL AID INFORMATION NIGHT:  On Monday, September 23, we are hosting a College Financial Aid Information Night beginning at 6:30 p.m. in our theater for our seniors and their parents.  Lindsay Driskell, Director of Financial Aid at Jefferson Community and Technical College, will be our guest speaker and will walk seniors and parents through all they need to know about financing their college education.  If you have any questions, please contact our college counselors, LEIGH JACKSON or KIMBERLY HABICH.
