Music Program

The Music Department at Assumption High School is committed to nurturing the musical growth of all students.  Students are able to participate in various ensembles and classes based on their natural ability and training. Three levels of choral ensembles are offered during the school day.  Our Beginning Chorus is a one semester choir which teaches vocal development, sight singing, and  music theory through the use of unison and two part music.  No experience is necessary for Beginning Choir and it is open to freshmen through seniors.  Our intermediate choir is Chamber Choir. This is a full year, auditioned, competitive choir and students may audition if they have taken Beginning Chorus or have taken private voice lessons prior to coming to Assumption.  This class continues developing vocal techniques, sight singing and theory through the use of two and three-part music. Freshmen through seniors are eligible to audition for this course.  Advanced Choir is our highest choir.  This choir is an auditioned, competitive choir of the highest level. This choir develops the most advanced vocal techniques, sight singing and theory through the use of three-part through, at times, six and eight-part music.  It is open to sophomores through seniors who have completed Beginning Chorus or Chamber Choir and an audition.
For students interested in playing an instrument Assumption offers several opportunities.  Students with prior experience of three years or more may choose to take our Advanced Instrumental Ensemble, open to freshmen through seniors.  This is a chamber type ensemble for students who play string, woodwind, brass or percussion instruments.  Assumption offers two guitar ensembles open to sophomores through seniors.   Guitar I ensemble is for those students who have little or no prior guitar playing experience. This course focuses on reading music and playing basic melodies and chords.  Also offered is Guitar II for those students who have completed Guitar I or who have prior guitar playing experience.
Aside from ensemble work, AP Music Theory is offered every other year for those students interested in pursuing college level music coursework. For those students who don't wish to be in a performance ensemble, we also offer The History of Rock and Roll class.
Currently we have a handbell choir that meets afterschool.  We have membership in the Music Honor Society, Tri M.  Lastly, you may hear girls “Jammin' for Jesus” which is our club that offers musical performance for our prayer services and liturgies.
Mrs. Metry is a member of the Kentucky Music Educator's Association (KMEA) and a member of the American Choral Director's Association (ACDA).  Through this membership her students are eligible to participate in festivals for solo and ensemble work.
