Carpool Procedures and Traffic Flow 2018-2019

Dropping off in the morning

  • BASIC CARPOOL PROCEDURE: enter from Bardstown Road via the two-way drive and pull up along the side of the gym as far as you can before stopping; when car stops, student(s) exit the vehicle; vehicle remains in the carpool line and continues on via the two-way drive to the exit onto Tyler Lane
  • The carpool line follows a one-way traffic pattern, entering campus from Bardstown Road and exiting to Tyler Lane
  • Prior to 7:30 a.m. (8:30 on 9:05 Schedule days), cars may stop along the two-way drive near the entrance to the Arts and Sciences wing to drop off students--from 7:30 to 7:50 (8:30-8:50 on 9:05 Schedule days), however, drivers must pull up as far as possible along the side of the Convocation and Athletic Center before stopping to let students out
  • When exiting the campus onto Tyler Lane, drivers may want to avoid the traffic at the light by turning left onto Tyler Lane; they can then go down a block and turn either way onto Eleanor Avenue, go a block or two, and then turn east to get back to Bardstown Road without waiting for the light on Tyler Lane
  • None of our parking lots is to be used as a drop-off area as this presents a safety hazard both for the students walking through the parking lot and for those who are trying to park there
  • Carpool drivers need to watch for pedestrians who will be crossing the driveway to get from the parking lots to the school buildings
  • Take care of long conversations, lunch money, permission slips, and so on before you get to campus
  • If you need to switch drivers or the student needs to get something out of the trunk, please arrive prior to 7:30/8:30 so you can stop without significantly delaying traffic and causing a back-up onto Bardstown Road

Picking up in the afternoon

  • BASIC CARPOOL PROCEDURE: enter from Bardstown Road via the two-way drive and pull up along the side of the gym as far as you can before stopping; when all passengers are in the vehicle, the driver may very carefully pull out of the carpool line and continue on via the two-way drive to the exit onto Tyler Lane; cars in the carpool lane move up as cars exit
  • The carpool line follows a one-way traffic pattern, entering campus from Bardstown Road and exiting to Tyler Lane
  • Those arriving to pick up students prior to 3:10 need to follow the same procedure as for morning drop-off: heading west, pull up as far as possible along the side of the gym building before stopping to wait; students will have to walk along the line of stopped cars all along the buildings to look for the car
  • It is recommended that carpool drivers pick students up at 3:10 or 3:15 instead of 2:55--it takes students a few minutes to get out of the building anyway, and this will allow the driveway and parking lots to clear before they drive onto campus
  • Once the car has all its students, the driver may cautiously pull out of the line of waiting cars and proceed to the exit; those still in line pull up as far as possible behind the car ahead of them
  • Since none of our parking lots is designated as a pick-up area, drivers may not pull into a lot/parking space and stop and wait for students until after 3:10 when the lots have cleared
  • The small parking lot near the entrance to the Arts and Sciences building is for faculty/staff parking; drivers should not use it as a waiting spot or block the entrance/exit for this lot
  • Drivers should not wait for students in parking lots of area businesses or along Tyler Lane--this will inconvenience our neighbors and violate our agreement with the zoning board.
