Jody Schaefer Named Head Coach for Nationally Ranked Field Hockey Team

In 1990, Schaefer was named the first assistant coach in the history of Assumption field hockey. In addition to her role as assistant coach, she has served as the Catholic School Athletic Association (CSAA) Hockey Liaison; the Director of the Assumption High School Field Hockey League for the CSAA; the International Field Hockey Club of Kentucky (IFHCK) under-14 Premier Program Director; and Saint Michael Catholic School’s head field hockey coach for grades 5-8. The multi-talented Schaefer even lead Assumption’s basketball program as the junior varsity head coach and assistant varsity coach from 1990 to 1994. She was a member of Bellarmine University’s (then Bellarmine College) inaugural field hockey team and served as team captain during the 1988 season.
I am honored to have the opportunity to continue to work with Assumption’s incredible field hockey coaching staff, athletic personnel, and administration in this new role,” shared Schaefer. “Most of all, I am excited to continue the work Coach Judd and I began more than 25 years ago, helping to teach girls how to grow into strong, resilient women who just happen to be amazing field hockey players.”
Schaefer is a full-time faculty member at Assumption High School who teaches English and facilitates events in the Student Activities Office. She is recipient of the Karen Russ Excellence in Teaching Award and has been nominated for Assumption’s Hall of Fame and The Rose Award. Schaefer also moderates Assumption’s Varsity Club, a student group that plans and implements Assumption’s intramural program. She develops and facilitates the freshman program for Assumption’s nationally recognized Mission Week and helped create and plans the Pink and White Game, an annual event which engages four Catholic high schools to raise money for breast cancer awareness.
“We were thrilled that Coach Schaefer was interested in transitioning to the head coaching position,” said Assumption Athletic Director Angela Passafiume. “Jody is a leader on and off the field and has a special personality that student athletes identify with and appreciate,” Passafiume added. “She was the natural choice to be the next head field hockey coach at Assumption and lead the program she has been so instrumental in making great.”
