For more than thirty years, Assumption High School has championed students with diagnosed learning differences, ensuring they receive the support and accommodations needed to flourish in a rigorous, college‑preparatory environment. What began as a bold vision is now a nationally recognized program and, most importantly, a source of pride for the students who are part of it.

Personalized Support
At the heart of the Learning Differences Program is intentional, personalized support. From the very beginning, students are welcomed through a structured orientation process that includes:
- Parent meetings
- Individual student conferences
- A summer session for rising freshmen to support a smooth transition
Academic Integration
Students in the Learning Differences Program fully participate in Assumption’s college‑preparatory curriculum, with accommodations designed to meet their individual needs. These may include:
- Extended testing time
- Quiet testing environments
- Guided notes or note takers
- Recorded lectures
- Calculator use
Executive Functioning Skills
During freshman year, students work closely with a coordinator who emphasizes:
- Organization and time management
- Note-taking strategies
- Study skills and active learning techniques
Active Learning Strategies
Weekly lessons focus on active learning strategies, such as:
- Teaching material to others
- Creating practice quizzes
- Engaging with content in meaningful, hands-on ways

RTI & Real-Time Academic Support
The Learning Differences Program works closely with Assumption’s Response to Intervention (RTI) system. During RTI, students may receive targeted support for:
- Math or subject‑specific help
- Missing assignments
- Test corrections or makeups
RTI strengthens collaboration between teachers and learning specialists, allowing for timely interventions and ongoing monitoring of student progress.
Homework Call & Consistent Routines
Each day, students may attend Homework Call, a structured after‑school support session where they can complete assignments in a focused, encouraging environment. Many students attend regularly, using this time to stay organized, accountable, and on track.
Preparing for College & Beyond
The program supports students and families throughout the college transition, including guidance on documentation for accommodations on standardized tests such as the ACT.
While some diagnoses - such as ADHD or dyslexia - are lifelong, others may require updated documentation. The Learning Differences Program helps families navigate these requirements with clarity and care.
Growth, Recognition, & Community
Today, the Learning Differences Program serves approximately 25% of Assumption’s student body, up from 15% in earlier years. With an ideal enrollment of about 50 students per class, the program balances growth with deeply personalized support.
Assumption’s model has drawn recognition at both state and national levels and continues to serve as a resource for other schools seeking to replicate its success.
