April 15, 2008 – Louisville, KY – Assumption High Schooll recently named Rebecca “Becky” Henle the school’s new principal. After conducting a national search, a committee of faculty and staff members voted unanimously to hire Henle, currently serving as principal at Peninsula Catholic High School in Newport News, Virginia.
Assumption High School president Elaine Salvo made the announcement to faculty and staff on April 14, describing Henle as a great fit and excellent leader to carry the school into the future. “Becky believes that the teachers are the heart and soul of the school and that they dictate the culture and climate of the school. She believes that the role of the principal is to support the teachers so that they can provide a positive learning environment where the students are cared for and valued, have a sense of belonging, and are able to grow and develop into caring, compassionate, and educated young women.”
After earning a Bachelor of Science in Secondary Education from the University of Dayton, Henle earned a Masters of Education in Educational Administration from the University of Arkansas at Little Rock. She began her career as an English teacher in 1979, and has taught English at all grade levels in Catholic schools in Virginia, Arkansas, Delaware, Ohio, and Wisconsin. She coordinated the International Baccalaureate Diploma Program at Mount St. Mary Academy in Little Rock, Arkansas, for four years before being named principal in 2003. She is currently the principal at Peninsula Catholic High School in Newport News, Virginia.
As a member of the Mercy Secondary Education Association and Network for Mercy Education, Henle has a strong connection to the Mercy tradition found at Assumption. In her letter of application for the position, Henle wrote, “I embrace the charism of Catherine McAuley, foundress of the Sisters of Mercy, and I would love the opportunity to dedicate my time and talents to supporting the values of Mercy education at another outstanding Mercy school.” Henle and her family are originally from Louisville and look forward to returning to the community.
Henle will succeed Mary Ann Steutermann, the school’s current principal, who has accepted a position as Dean of Faculty at Assumption. Henle will assume her new position in July 2008.
