Gariepy was named a National Merit Scholarship Finalist, while Ighodaro was named a National Achievement Scholarship Finalist.

The National Merit Scholarship Program and National Achievement Scholarship Program are academic competitions designed to acknowledge students taking the Preliminary SAT and the National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test. The National Merit Scholarship Program has now determined which of the 16,000 semifinalists named in September 2007 have met all requirements to advance to finalist standing in the competition. Senior Chrissy Gariepy has been named as a finalist in the 2008 competition and will be considered for National Merit Scholarships to be offered in 2008. The National Achievement Scholarship Program has determined which of the 1,600 students named semifinalists in September 2007 have qualified as finalists in the competition. Senior Adesuwa “Ade” Ighodaro has been named as a finalist in the 2008 competition for National Achievement Scholarships and will be considered for National Achievement Scholarships to be offered to outstanding Black American students in 2008.

“We are extremely proud to have two Assumption seniors recognized by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation,” said Mary Ann Steutermann, principal. “The faculty and administration at Assumption focus a great deal of our efforts on academics and preparation for college; it is rewarding to see such bright students honored on a national level.”
