March 10, 2008 – Louisville, KY – Eseosa “Ese” Ighodaro, a 2007 alumna of Assumption High School, was selected to attend the prestigious Summer Medical and Dental Education Program (SMDEP), sponsored by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation.

According to smdep.org, this free, six-week, residential program was established in 1988 to increase the number of highly qualified medical school applicants from minority groups that were underrepresented in medicine. The program has since expanded to include pre-dental students facing similar challenges, and is focused on students in their first two years of college study.

Ighodaro is a freshman honors student at the University of Kentucky, studying for a career in medicine. Her former Assumption science teacher, Jonni Miller, encouraged Ighodaro to apply. Ighodaro will attend the summer program at the University of Louisville, where she will work with small groups to integrate and apply the basic sciences, utilizing team-based medical applications. Participants will enjoy the opportunity to meet with practicing physicians, dentists, and professional school admissions officers and counselors to create a customized academic and career plan, and will also explore the city of Louisville through trips to Waterfront Park and the Muhammad Ali Center. Ighodaro will receive three hours of academic credit for this Introduction to Fundamentals of Biomedical Sciences course.
