The media is invited to join the Kentucky Derby Museum, staff and students at Assumption High School (2170 Tyler Ln.) at 10:30 A.M. on Wednesday, January 23rd to surprise the recipient of the Owner’s Award for the annual museum art contest: Horsing Around With Art.

Heather Perez is a Senior at Assumption and we will surprise her during art class with a dozen roses and the announcement. Perez wins box seats to the Kentucky Derby on May 3rd, art supplies and 800 dollars for her school’s art program. She will also present her artwork to the winning owners of the Derby immediately following the race at the Winner’s Party held in the museum. Her work will be exhibited during the show until March 23rd at the Kentucky Derby Museum.

The Owner’s Award is given for the artwork which best captures the spirit of the Kentucky Derby. Perez’s piece was selected for its original design and transition from the past to present with unique use of collage along with black and white and color.

Perez is in the school’s advanced placement art class and has chosen the horse as her focus for the year. She has a passion for horses and shows them in competition. Several of her current pieces are on display in Assumption’s gallery.

This is the second year in a row Assumption, an independent catholic high school, receives the top honor and prizes for this contest.

The Horsing Around with Art Exhibit will be open from 9:00-9:45 AM for the media on Wednesday morning for photo ops (before we travel to Assumption) and after 11:30 AM.

The exhibit runs until March 23rd and is available with regular museum admission.
