January 22, 2008 – Louisville, KY – Assumption High School will devote the week of February 11-14, to the school’s annual Mission Week activities. Beginning this year, however, classes will not be held during this week, allowing all students and teachers the opportunity to take part in school-sponsored learning experiences.
Mission Week embodies Assumption’s commitment to educating the whole person - mind, body, and spirit - by devoting one week in February to service projects and class-wide enrichment activities. Principal Mary Ann Steutermann stresses the importance of this week’s activities, “It is no exaggeration to say that this one week embodies what the Assumption experience is all about. We are about learning in both traditional and innovative ways. We are about expanding our vision and challenging ourselves with Jesus’ gospel as articulated through our Mercy values. We are about making sure that individual students have their needs met and their interests reflected in our decision-making. We are about intellectual and personal growth that makes wonderful use of books and classrooms but refuses to be limited by them."
Throughout the week, students will participate in a variety of experiences, all centered around the Assumption mission. Some seniors will choose to go on mission trips during the week, or attend a senior retreat. Others will participate in a two-day “College Boot Camp” on campus, and then choose to do community service, take part in an overnight immersion retreat, or go on a job shadow or college day. Juniors will also have one job shadow day and college day. Additionally, they will travel downtown to learn first-hand about homelessness in Louisville, and hear speakers on moral sexual decision-making. Sophomore students will discuss domestic and dating violence and learn self-defense, participate in two days of service-learning within the community, and take a practice ACT test. Freshmen will be involved in a two-day immersion experience in downtown Louisville, in which they will learn about the historical, environmental, and social fabric of our city, hear speakers about moral sexual decision-making, and learn about Assumption’s Mercy heritage during tea with our own Sisters of Mercy. All students – freshmen through seniors – will participate in a whole school prayer experience and choose enrichment sessions, founded in Mercy values, that they wish to attend.
