Guidance Services Mission and Philosophy

Mission Statement

Within the mission of Assumption High School, the Guidance Department strives to promote the resilience of women by acknowledging their uniqueness and offering a comprehensive developmental counseling program to meet their needs as lifelong learners in search of truth.

  • We support the education of the whole person in a caring, Christian environment by creating and implementing educational programs that foster emotional, physical, academic, and career development.
  • Recognizing the wide range of abilities, talents, and needs of our student body, we offer individualized college and career information and guidance.
  • Through our comprehensive student assistance program, we offer personal, academic, and group counseling.
  • We commit to professional development in order to meet the changing needs of the AHS community and participate actively in professional organizations on a national, state, and local level.
  • We communicate information regarding the variety of counseling services offered to the Assumption High School community.
  • As student advocates, we support and educate our students, parents, faculty, and staff and connect them to appropriate community resources.

Guidance Services Statement of Philosophy

Counselors at Assumption High School believe

  • that each student has dignity and worth and that what she does makes a difference.
  • that every student has an opportunity to participate in our comprehensive school counseling program.
  • that our program meets the needs of the diversity within the Assumption community.
  • that a designated college and academic counselor assist each student in planning her college and career choices.
  • that students benefit from a safe, confidential environment where they are encouraged to express feelings and concerns and guided toward making healthy life choices.
  • that an effective counseling program is the result of a responsible and mutual effort on the part of the school, the family, and the community at large.

We believe that the comprehensive school counseling program should

  • support the mission and philosophy of Assumption High School.
  • support the school in motivating students to realize their maximum potential.
  • serve our students with a consistent counseling presence throughout the duration of their high school careers by designating a student assistance counselor to each graduating class as they matriculate.
  • abide by the professional school counseling ethics as advocated by American School Counselor Association and the Kentucky standards for counseling practices
  • be based upon criteria gathered from national standards, best practices, and the identified needs of our community.
  • use data gathered each year to evaluate our comprehensive school program and to develop new programs based upon that information.
  • collaborate regularly with the Assumption school community through the advisory board and Student Support Services Team.
  • be integrated into the broader high school curriculum and student life.
