Service Learning Program
At Assumption High School, service learning is important in all areas of the school. It is guided by the mission of the Sisters of Mercy that places equal emphasis on contemplation, action, hospitality and compassion. The service program has been in place for 30 years as the school lives out its mission of educating the whole student in a caring, Christian environment.
As a Catholic school, it is important that students live their faith by learning to "love one another" and answer their Baptism and Confirmation calls to serve as Jesus did. In addition, the four-year service program gives students the opportunity to experience peace and justice issues, other cultures and lifestyles and to think globally as they act locally as a part of the community.
Areas of service include working with pre-schools and grade schools, assisting the elderly, volunteering at local hospitals and helping other agencies with special needs.
ACTS
ACTS (A Christian Through Service) is Assumption's service learning program that has both curricular and co-curricular components. Assumption's program has been designed to "grow" with the student.
- Freshmen are encouraged to become involved voluntarily in a non-threatening atmosphere–their immediate communities (neighborhood, parish, school). The objective of the freshman program is to raise student awareness of needs around them, to develop their interest in responding to those needs, to teach them how to make contact/inquiries regarding needs and scheduling, and to develop their confidence.
- Service is a required component sophomore year. Sophomore service is a more structured, guided 12-week program during the spring when each sophomore goes to an assigned community agency, school, hospital, facility serving the disabled, or a senior citizen home. Service is performed during the schoolday. Visit the Sophomore ACTS page on SchoolFusion for more information.
- During the junior service program, the students are challenged to choose their agency, to do their service outside school hours, to make their own arrangements (including transportation), and to establish their own contacts and schedules. Juniors are required to complete a minimum of 15 hours of service by the end of the semester they take Catholic Social Teaching; their service is curriculum-driven and must address a social justice issue.
- Senior service returns to voluntary status anticipating that students will move into leadership roles and incorporate service into who they are. Senior service is led by the Service Action Leadership Team (SALT). It is usually project-oriented and is based on community need and interest of the students.
The organized, ongoing ACTS program is coordinated through campus ministry; however, departments throughout the school also participate in service learning on different levels.
