Service Learning Program

Guided by the mission of the Sisters of Mercy, the service program at Assumption High School has been in in place for over 30 years. As a Catholic school, it is important that students live their faith by learning to “love one another” and answer the call to serve as Jesus did. This dedication to service is evident in all areas of the school and places equal emphasis on contemplation, action, hospitality, and compassion. In addition, A Christian Through Service (ACTS), our four-year service program, provides an opportunity for our students to develop a deeper understanding of peace and justice issues as well as different cultures and lifestyles.

Assumption students learn to think globally and act locally as a part of the community.

A Christian Through Service

ACTS (A Christian Through Service) is Assumption’s service program that has both curricular and co-curricular components. Assumption’s program has been designed to “grow” with the student.

Freshman ACTS focuses on learning and awareness about service opportunities in our communities. Freshmen are required to complete a minimum of 5 hours of service by the end of the school year.

Sophomore ACTS
emphasizes forming relationships through direct service at preschools, grade schools, and agencies serving the elderly and those with special needs. Sophomore service is a more structured, guided 10-week program. Approximately 50 hours of service is performed during the school day at over 50 different agencies in the city of Louisville.

Junior ACTS challenges students to choose their own agencies, do their service outside school hours, make their own arrangements (including transportation), and establish their own contacts and schedules. Juniors are required to complete a minimum of 15 hours of service by the end of the semester they take Catholic Social Teaching; their service is curriculum-driven and must address a social justice issue.

Senior ACTS calls upon students to seek service through clubs, activities or independently. Through their service, seniors will follow in the footsteps of Catherine McAuley and seek out the needs of our society and take action against the injustices causing them.

The organized, ongoing ACTS program is coordinated through Campus Ministry; however, departments throughout the school also participate in service on different levels.

Volunteer Connection

Are you an agency looking for student volunteers? Assumption students use MobileServe to connect to local service opportunities for voluntary and required service hours. MobileServe offers a basic version of their platform for free to NonProfits so you can begin recruiting Assumption students to volunteer for your agency or event.  If you are interested in getting more information and creating an account to post opportunities, please reach out to support@mobileserve.org. We ask that all student volunteer requests be made through MobileServe. Opportunities should be posted at least three weeks in advance. Once information is posted on MobileServe, our students will have access to the post and the Service Learning Director will promote the opportunity from within the school.
