Summer Camps

Thank you for your interest in Assumption High School’s summer camps. We will begin accepting reservations on Monday, February 20, 2017, at 7:45 a.m. 

ATHLETIC CAMPS

Archery

This camp will introduce beginners to the fundamentals of shooting the bow, concentrating on proper form and technique. Intermediate archers will review instruction and proper execution of the shot. Scoring and tournament regulations will be covered, along with additional shooting aids that are tournament legal.

Basketball

Learn the basic fundamentals of basketball while running specific drills that will enhance your overall ability. We will have competitions and play games with current Assumption players who will be helping lead the camp.

Cheerleading

Come join the Assumption cheerleaders for two days of fun-filled cheerleading! You will learn proper technique and basic fundamentals of high school cheerleading from the AHS varsity cheerleaders and coaching staff. The two days will be broken down into blocks of cheer, dance, jumps, and stunts!

Cross Country

Assumption cross country has a tradition of excellence, including six state championships and three Nike Cross Country National Championship berths! The camp is led by Head Coach Barry Haworth and is a great way to prepare for the upcoming cross country season. Campers will do daily runs, and Coach Haworth will help the girls learn effective injury prevention, stretching routines, and most importantly, how to make running fun!

Elite Field Hockey

Field Hockey

Head Coach Debbie Judd, who has led our field hockey program to ten state championships, will focus on developing each player’s core skills, positional play, and field hockey strategies. Our goal is to improve player performance and to stimulate a love for the game, so of course we will have FUN! Each day campers will participate in small games. Campers will be grouped according to age and experience to maximize their individual learning experience. Come see why we are such an amazing program!

Lacrosse

Assumption’s lacrosse camp is designed to teach and develop the fundamental skills of the game: throwing, catching, cradling, shooting, feeding, ground balls, and offensive and defensive skills while focusing on improving participants’ level of confidence. Our camp offers players the opportunity to improve their stick skills and conceptual understanding of the game through challenging drills, skill building activities, and full-field scrimmages. The camp staff includes the AHS coaching staff, along with varsity and rising JV players.

Soccer

The Assumption High School soccer camp is designed for young players looking to develop their fundamental skills and grow their love for the game. Our goal is to instill the joy of the game in each camper by focusing on sound technical development in a fun and inclusive environment.

The Assumption High School advanced soccer camp is designed to further player development and introduce campers to higher levels of technical and tactical training. Our goal is to prepare campers to play at the high school level, by focusing on team concepts.

Softball

The Rocket Softball Camp will be led by Head Coach Lisa Pinkston and her staff. This fast paced, action packed clinic will include all aspects of the game. Players will be grouped by age and skill level. Offense – all areas of offense will be covered: hitting for power, slapping and bunting. Defense – players will be able to choose a position for improvement (including pitchers and catchers). Base running – players will learn proper base running technique including diving and sliding. Competitive games and daily challenges will be played to build confidence! Our camp staff will include AHS assistant softball coaches as well as former college softball players to provide a fun learning environment for young players to improve!

Volleyball

This camp, led by 19-time state champion Coach Ron Kordes, will offer instruction in basic and intermediate skills of volleyball. Campers will be grouped according to ability to maximize their individual learning experience. Attention will be directed to playing strategies, physical and jump training, teamwork, leadership, and having fun!

ENRICHMENT CAMPS

Affective Skills – Building a Positive Self-image for Girls

During these two fun-filled sessions, girls will have the opportunity to spend time with their peers doing activities, making crafts, role-playing, singing, dancing, and learning one of the most important life lessons: that she is a valuable person, she has dignity and worth, and what she does makes a difference.  In this camp we will focus on building self-esteem and helping young girls create and maintain a positive body image!  Come and join us as we learn a little more about ourselves and each other.  Bonus: each camper will receive a patch which can be placed on the back of their sash or tunic if they are a member of Daisy Scouts, Brownies, or Girl Scouts.  However, you are NOT required to be a member of a Girl Scout organization to attend.  Peanut-free snacks will be served during each session.

Special Note – If your daughter attended the camp “Amazing…Just the Way You Are” in 2015 or 2016, this camp will NOT be the exact same lessons/instruction/activities, however many of the same concepts will be covered.

Assumption’s Got Talent

Do you like to sing in the shower?  Do you think you could be the next Lady Gaga, or Beyoncé?  Then this camp is for YOU! Any females who enjoy solo and group singing should apply.  Campers will bring a couple of song suggestions and work on how to make the song their own.  They will work on vocal techniques, audition strategies, and stage presence.  The week will end with a final solo performance of all participants, so be ready to be a star!

Astronaut Party

Calling all astronauts! In this camp, we will build mini rockets, make space treats, and play games like "don't drop the asteroid" and "catch the alien".

Camp Half-Blood

Campers will select several Greek myths, gods, or goddesses to study more in depth.  We will discuss how the time affected these myths, gods and goddesses, and how each of these is still affecting us today. Participants will have the opportunity to examine elements of mythology in contemporary novels (e.g. Harry Potter and Percy Jackson).  Campers will also play games from these novels like quidditch and capture the flag.

Clay Camp

Come play in the dirt! Campers will explore the pottery wheel and a variety of hand-building techniques while creating functional and sculptural art. Projects will include functional cups, plates and bowls as well as imaginative or realistic animal sculptures. Campers should not wear “good” clothes as they are likely to get a little dirty. They may want to bring an old shirt or tee-shirt to wear over their clothes. **Clay pieces will be available for pick up in the front office after June 22 (the following Thursday).

Competitive Speech

Campers will learn the basics of competitive speech. They will then research and begin structuring a piece for performance during the school year. Any student who attends this camp can receive coaching from the Assumption Speech Team during the school year.

Culinary Camp I

A unique opportunity to cook along with Assumption High School's own Chef for three days. Learn basic culinary skills as we prepare an exciting and delicious meal each day. Entice your taste buds with Italian flare when we prepare an Italian meal from scratch. Hang on to your sombrero as we turn up the heat and south to the border to cook some authentic Hispanic Cuisine.

Culinary Camp II Advanced (Must have attended Culinary Camp I to attend this camp)

A unique opportunity to cook with Assumption High School's own Chef for three days. Explore a higher level of culinary skills as we prepare exciting and delicious meals each day. Entice your taste buds with the tastes of Thailand as we prepare an authentic Thai meal from scratch. Bring your sense of adventure as we explore the Open Seas with a Seafood lover's palate. Venture to the Caribbean Islands as we turn on the heat with some Authentic Latin Cuisine.

Cupcakes and Cookies

In this camp, we will be decorating cupcakes and garnishing dipped sandwich cookies. Using chocolate and white cake, campers will have opportunities to try different techniques, and will leave with four decorated cupcakes (possibilities include flower garden, puppies, and aliens). We’ll also have some fun with dipped sandwich cookies! If contacted in advance, I am willing to try and work with gluten/nut allergies.

Drama

This fun and fast paced camp introduces young actors to the wide open world of drama. Instructors will lead students in warm-ups, creative drama activities, and basic acting exercises that will help students to feel confident using their voices, bodies, and imaginations as instruments for creative expression. This camp will end with a culminating showcase.

French It Up!

Explore your inner French girl! Fun, frolic, and fashion in a relaxed casual French-y setting. You will make crepes, compare French and American picnics, watch YouTube videos about French culture and explore the fashion world of France. No prior knowledge of French is required! If you are interested in exploring the fashion, foods, and culture of the French-speaking world then this camp is for you! Vive la France!

Introduction to Robotics

Are you ready to build a robot army to take over the world? During this camp we will use Lego Mindstorms EV3 to design, build, and program our robots to perform various tasks.

Junior Rocket Science Camp

Join us in the chemistry lab as we investigate chemical and physical changes. Make your own chalk, explore acid base indicators, and create solar powered art. For safety purposes, no flip flops may be worn in the laboratory.

Math Fun – Comprehension of Core Concepts Using Hands-on Activities

We will to cover key core concepts such as factors, primes, multiples, number sense, place value, rounding, decimal operations, fractions, word problems, money and more. Using manipulatives, real life connections, and STEM related projects, we will enhance the general comprehension of core concepts essential to 4th and 5th grade math success.

Musical Theatre

This summer camp offers young singers and actors the chance to polish their musical theatre skills. Students will learn the ins and outs of choosing the right music, auditioning skills, beginning vocal technique, exploring choreography, and “selling” the song. The class will be taught by Jan Tedesco, musical director for Assumption's fall Broadway productions.

Public Forum Debate

Campers will learn the basics of Public Forum debate. They will study basic argumentation and persuasive techniques while preparing cases for both sides of a debate resolution.   Any student who attends this camp can receive coaching from the Assumption Debate Team during the school year, and assistance in joining the Wilson Wyatt Debate League.

Sensational Scrapbooking for Beginners

Come and learn some creative ideas for scrapbooking memories. Discover techniques to create interesting page layout designs, learn some fun photography tips, and how to make a digital story book. Campers will be creating three (3) scrapbook projects during this camp including a traditional scrapbook. Each camper will be given a personal scrapbook supply box to take home at the end of the week. All supplies will be provided, but participants will need to bring their own pictures for projects each day. No scrapbooking experience necessary.

Sentence Sense – Comprehensive review of grammar lessons for middle school students

In this camp, we will review proper punctuation, Parts of Speech, writing techniques, and best of all, diagramming sentences! This camp is a great resource to help students in grades 7 and 8 keep their grammar skills sharp during the summer months. It is recommended that students have a basic knowledge of the Parts of Speech to help ensure they develop a stronger knowledge of the content. Grammar can be boring, but this is sure to be a fun and interactive class!
