Rocket Report
Dear Parents,
We thank all of our parents who participated in our parent/teacher/student conferences last night. We are so appreciative of your time and effort, and we value the opportunity to work together for your daughters.
CALENDAR NOTES:
- SPRING BREAK: Spring break will begin Friday, March 29, since we met our Rocket Raffle ticket sale incentive, and continue through Sunday, April 7. School will resume on Monday, April 8.
- BLOODMOBILE: On Monday, March 18 and Tuesday, March 19, the National Honor Society will be hosting the Bloodmobile sponsored by the Red Cross between the hours of 8:00-2:00 p.m. at Assumption. Students, faculty, and staff are invited to give. Parents, please ask your daughter if she is signed up to give. If she is, please make sure that she eats a good dinner the night before and a good breakfast the morning prior to her donation. The Red Cross also recommends that donors drink a lot of water to stay hydrated both before and after donating. In the past, we have had some openings available and would like to invite parents to donate. If you would like to donate on behalf of Assumption on March 18 or 19, please email Kelly.Kirwan@ahsrockets.org, and she can provide you with times that are available. If you have never given blood, this is a wonderful way that you can make a difference. In advance, thank you for considering!
CAMPUS MINISTRY:
- PARENT PRAYER GROUP ON TUESDAY MORNINGS: We invite all parents to join our parent prayer group that meets on Tuesdays at 8:15 a.m. in the chapel. Each prayer experience lasts just 30 minutes, dress is casual, and there’s no commitment to ongoing participation. Just come whenever you can make it!
AP EXAMS: Students who have signed up to take AP exams this May have been given invoices to cover the cost of their exam. AP Research and AP Seminar are $142 each and all other exams are $94 each. The exam fees are due in the office by Tuesday, March 26. Please check with your daughter about the invoice if she is currently enrolled in an AP class. Any questions, please contact KATHY FLEISCHER.
ABSENCES BEFORE/AFTER SPRING BREAK: Assumption does not excuse students from school for family trips and/or vacations. If you are planning to take your daughter out of school before 2:55 p.m. on Thursday, March 28, to get a jump start on Spring Break travel, please bear in mind that the absence will be unexcused and she will not be able to receive credit for anything collected for a grade (including tests) in her classes while she is gone. She may not submit the work early or turn it in after the absence for late credit. If your daughter becomes ill and is unable to attend school on Thursday, March 28, or Monday, April 8, she will need to provide a doctor’s note for the absence to be excused. If you have any questions or concerns about this, please contact Dean of Students CINDI BAUGHMAN. Full details about our attendance and absence policies and procedures can be found in the STUDENT-PARENT HANDBOOK.
2019-2020 SCHOOL CALENDAR: We are in the process of working on the 2019-2020 school calendar. Although we have not finalized the calendar, we recognize that our families may need general calendar information in advance. In order to help with this need, the tentative key calendar dates for 2019-2020 are posted on our website through this link: IMPORTANT DATES FOR 2019-2020 SCHOOL CALENDAR
LETTERS FROM COLLEGES: Attention, senior parents! Please have your senior daughters submit ALL letters received from colleges regarding scholarship offers, admission to special programs and honors colleges, as well as admission decisions to Leigh Jackson, college counselor. This information is vital to the Senior Honors Ceremony. These letters can be hard copies, faxes, or scanned copies and can be emailed directly to COLLEGE.LETTERS@ahsrockets.org by Thursday, March 28.
PREVENTION ASSEMBLY 2018: Our annual prevention assembly will be held on Thursday, March 21. Our featured speaker is Mark Parrish, a therapist from Innerview. He will speak about drug and alcohol prevention, how drug and alcohol affect the teen brain, and he will give special attention to vaping and other current drug/alcohol trends. Our Peer Leaders will follow the presentation with two days of prevention-related activities during RocketTime, which will include information on vaping/e-cigarettes and addiction. While we have prevention programs running year-round, we wanted to highlight this special student prevention program planned for March.
RPN INFORMATION (Rocket Parent Network): According to an article posted on the Norton Children’s Hospital website, “Suicide, including child suicide, is a public health issue. Suicide rates have been rising in nearly every U.S. state, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). In 2016, suicide became the second leading cause of death for ages 10 to 34, according to the CDC. The CDC also reports 17.2 percent of high school students seriously considered suicide within the last year, according to an annual survey.” (Source: https://nortonchildrens.com/news/parents-may-be-unaware-child-suicide-thoughts/) National data from the CDC’s Youth Risk Behavior Survey indicates that the number of students who persistently felt sad and/or hopeless increased from 29% in 2007 to 32% in 2017 (Source: https://www.cdc.gov/features/yrbs/index.html). The RPN Board members encourage you to learn more about suicide prevention by reading the following articles:

COMPASSION CONNECTIONS: Compassion truly inspires at Assumption this season! Through our Compassion Connections program, each of our nine AHS families is now collecting needed items to support nine different nonprofit agencies. We kicked off this year’s Lenten collection today. Your daughter has been asked to bring in a specific item as her donation in homeroom. We’d love for you to consider donating as well. Just ask your daughter what items her homeroom is collecting and send in any you want to contribute with her between now and Spring Break. Also, students will be delivering these items to these agencies sometime in April. If you can help transport items, please tell your daughter to share this information in her homeroom. Thanks for helping us help so many others!
