Dear Parents,
We have survived our first week of virtual learning! We are so proud of our students and teachers for their hard work this week learning our virtual platform, Microsoft Teams, and attending classes in real time. Thank you, parents, as well for your support and patience as we implemented the virtual learning plan. As we do with everything at Assumption, we have been reviewing our processes and will be making a few minor adjustments to make things run even more smoothly. We will share those updates with you after spring break.
This week in our daily morning prayer and announcements that we email to the students, we shared two videos. The first video was a reminder about why social distancing is so important during this pandemic. The second video was a special spring break message video from myself and several of our teachers reminding students to practice social distancing especially during our upcoming spring break when we will have more free time than usual. We share these videos with you today as well:
We wish all of our families a restful and safe spring break!
CALENDAR NOTE:
- SPRING BREAK: Spring break will begin Friday, March 27, since we met our Rocket Raffle ticket sale incentive, and continue through Sunday, April 5. School via virtual learning will resume on Monday, April 6.
UPDATE ON EVENTS: Since the Spring Play, scheduled for April 17-19, and the Pink and White game, scheduled for April 24, were planned to occur so close to the date we are supposed to return to school (April 20), we had to make the heart-wrenching decision to cancel both events. The decision to cancel the Pink and White Game on April 24 was made with Sacred Heart, St. X, and Trinity at the head of school level. Both of these events require months and months of planning as well as rehearsing and practicing in order to have them safely and successfully occur in their traditional formats and we have lost that time due to the coronavirus outbreak.
We want to assure you that it is the timing of these events so close to April 20 that required this decision. We want to be clear that we have not made any decisions about cancellation of events after April 20 at this time. We will be considering each on a case by case basis as needed.
We know how disappointing this news is especially for our seniors and our senior parents. These are decisions that were not made lightly, and our hearts are broken that they had to be made. We may not know much right now in regard to our future, but we do know one thing for sure: no matter what happens, we will find a way to celebrate our seniors in a meaningful way. We appreciate your support and understanding during this difficult time.
AP EXAMS: As AP has already informed your daughter and her teacher: For the 2019–20 exam administration only, students can take a 45-minute online free-response exam at home. Educator-led development committees are currently selecting the exam questions that will be administered. For the most up to date information, please visit: https://apcentral.collegeboard.org/about-ap/news-changes/coronavirus-update.
NATIONAL ACT for JUNIORS: The National ACT for Juniors was scheduled for March 24 with a makeup date of April 7. ACT has released an additional make-up date of Tuesday, April 21. If we are in the building on that day, Assumption plans to administer the ACT on this day. Our college counselors are sending your daughter emails each day with the most up-to-date information about how colleges and universities will be adjusting on their end to the cancellation of ACT and SAT testing dates. Please make sure your daughter is paying close attention to this information.
NHS SELECTION DECISIONS: In light of world and national events, the NHS Council at Assumption has been delayed in their review and selection of student applications. Initially, it was communicated that applicants would receive a letter of decision via mail by Spring Break. The Council is working as efficiently and judiciously as they can. Students will be notified later than anticipated. Thank you for your patience and flexibility. Any questions? Email KELLY KIRWAN.
Gratefully,
Martha Tedesco
